(CNN) — The Justice Department on Monday said it has released 12,285 documents – less than 1% – of its Jeffrey Epstein-related files, with more than 2 million documents still being reviewed.

Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche told a federal judge in a Monday court filing that “substantial work remains to be done.”

Looking to update the court on their progress, they told Judge Paul Engelmayer of the Southern District of New York that the 12,285 documents the department has already released contain roughly 125,575 pages.

“There are more than 2 million documents potentially responsive to the Act that are in various phases of review,” they added.

It comes after Congress passed a law in November – with near-unanimous support – giving the Justice Department a December 19, 2025, deadline to release all of its files about Epstein, the convicted sex offender who was accused of abusing dozens of underage girls. Epstein died by suicide in 2019.

The files are made up of papers, videos, photographs and audio files that live within the FBI’s main electronic case management system and largely originate from the FBI’s two major investigations into Epstein, in Florida and New York, spanning decades. A July 2025 FBI memo said that the department had uncovered “more than 300 gigabytes of data and physical evidence” during a review of the investigative materials.

“This work has required and will continue to require substantial Department resources,” the Justice Department wrote to the judge in the Monday court filing.

“We noted in our prior letter the hundreds of attorneys dedicated to the review at the time of that letter. Currently, and anticipated for the next few weeks ahead, in the range of over 400 lawyers across the Department will dedicate all or a substantial portion of their workday to the Department’s efforts to comply with the Act.”

Trump appointees at the Justice Department have said they’re acting in good faith to release as much material as fast as possible, while also going through the painstaking work of reviewing every file to make sure victims’ identifies are shielded, as required by the law.

In a letter to Congress released on December 19, Blanche said the department was working “diligently” to meet the deadline but that the “volume of materials” meant it “must publicly produce responsive documents on a rolling basis.”

The Justice Department announced in late December that there were more than a million more newly discovered documents potentially related to Epstein – and that they would take “weeks” to review and release them.

And as CNN previously reported, the Justice Department’s leadership also asked career prosecutors in Florida to volunteer over the the holidays to help redact the documents.

(CNN) — Trump administration officials told lawmakers on Monday that then Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were injured after hitting their heads as they were fleeing US forces trying to arrest them, sources familiar with the briefing told CNN.

Maduro and Flores ran and attempted to hide behind a heavy steel door inside their compound, but the door frame was low and they hit their heads as they tried to escape, the officials said, according to the sources. Delta Force operators apprehended them and gave them first aid after they were extracted from the compound, the sources said.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, Attorney General Pam Bondi and CIA Director John Ratcliffe briefed top lawmakers for more than two hours on Monday evening.

Maduro and his wife appeared in court on Monday with visible injuries, and Flores’ attorney told the judge that she “sustained significant injuries” during her abduction. “Additionally, there’s belief that she may have a fracture or a severe bruising on her ribs.” Her attorney requested an X-ray and full physical evaluation to ensure her health moving forward.

Flores swayed and dipped her head at times during the hearing and Maduro struggled to sit down and stand up at points, according to reporters in court. Courtroom sketches of Flores showed her with bandages on her head.

The administration officials who briefed lawmakers on Monday described Flores’ head injury as minor, sources told CNN.

CNN has asked Maduro and Flores’ lawyers for comment on the latest details about their injuries.

Some Delta Force operators themselves sustained injuries during the operation as a result of a large firefight that erupted with a Cuban quick reaction force that was stationed nearby Maduro’s compound, the administration officials said. The troops were hit with bullets and shrapnel but their injuries are not life threatening, and they are expected to fully recover, the officials reiterated.

There were nearly 200 US personnel on the ground in Caracas during the operation, Hegseth said on Monday at a shipyard in Newport News, Virginia.

The briefers did not have a good estimate of how many Venezuelans or Cubans were killed during the operation, but Cuba’s government said on Monday that 32 of its military and police officers were killed. Trump’s deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Monday that the number was likely higher than that, describing what unfolded as a “raging gunfire battle.”

“The overwhelming share of casualties and fatalities that were inflicted were against the Cuban guard that had exerted control over the people of Venezuela,” Miller said.

The officials insisted during the briefing that Maduro’s capture was not a regime change operation, since the Venezuelan government remains largely intact and is now led by his deputy Delcy Rodriguez, sources familiar with the briefing said. (CNN) — When US forces struck the Venezuelan capital and ousted the country’s president Nicolás Maduro on Saturday, it turned one of President Donald Trump’s rhetorical threats into reality.

In the days since, his frequent musings about other items on his foreign policy wishlist have rung with renewed force, especially his repeated desire for the US to take over Greenland – the vast autonomous Arctic territory ruled by Denmark.

In the wake of such a brazen display of US military power in Venezuela, this rhetoric has taken on a different character, straining Washington’s relationship with its NATO ally.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated Monday that she had already “made it very clear where the Kingdom of Denmark stands, and that Greenland has repeatedly said that it does not want to be part of the United States.”

She even warned that it could lead to the demise of the NATO alliance.

So why might Trump keep turning his attention to this remote, sparsely populated island – and why is it causing tensions with Europe?

Here’s what you need to know.

What is Greenland like?

Greenland, a resource-rich island of 836,000 square miles (2.16 million square kilometers) is a former Danish colony and now an autonomous territory of Denmark, situated in the Arctic.

It’s the world’s least densely populated country and is so remote that its 56,000 residents travel by boat, helicopter and plane between its towns, which are predominantly scattered along the island’s western coast. Nuuk, the territory’s capital city, is emblematic of those towns, featuring brightly colored houses crowed together between a jagged coastline and inland mountains.

Outside the towns, Greenland is mostly wilderness with 81% of its land under ice. Nearly 90% of its population is of Inuit origin and the territory’s economy has long revolved around fishing.

Why is it so important strategically?

Greenland occupies a strategic geopolitical position, sitting between the US and Europe and astride the so-called GIUK gap – a maritime passage between Greenland, Iceland, and the UK that links the Arctic to the Atlantic Ocean.

Its rich deposits of natural resources, including oil, gas and rare earth minerals, make it even more strategically important, especially as China has leveraged its domination of the rare earth industry to exert pressure on the US. These rare earth minerals are increasingly crucial to the global economy since they are required to manufacture everything from electric cars and wind turbines to military equipment.

Greenland’s trove of minerals may become more accessible as the climate crisis melts Arctic ice, a phenomenon which also makes northern shipping routes navigable for more time throughout the year, potentially reorienting trade and making the region even more important, despite Trump calling the climate crisis “the greatest con job.”

Trump has downplayed the significance of Greenland’s natural resources, telling reporters last month: “We need Greenland for national security, not for minerals.”

But his former national security adviser Mike Waltz suggested in January 2024 that Trump’s focus was on natural resources, telling Fox News that the administration’s focus on Greenland was “about critical minerals” and “natural resources.”

PORT HUENEME, Calif. (KEYT) – There was a lockdown for a reported active shooter at Naval Base Ventura County Port Hueneme.

The Base was placed into a lockdown around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning and around 10:15 a.m. an all clear message was broadcast over the naval installation's public address system.

Witnesses at the naval installation tell Your News Channel that lights were out at the Base's medical building near the Silver Strand entrance in Oxnard.
