(CNN) — Eva Schloss, who survived the Holocaust as a teenager before becoming Anne Frank’s stepsister and a tireless campaigner against prejudice, has died at age 96, her trust announced Sunday.

“Eva was a remarkable woman: an Auschwitz survivor, a devoted Holocaust educator, tireless in her work for remembrance, understanding and peace,” the Anne Frank Trust UK, which Schloss co-founded, said Sunday.

Such was her impact that Britain’s King Charles III was among those who paid tribute to her.

“My wife and I are greatly saddened to hear of the death of Eva Schloss,” he said in a statement. “The horrors that she endured as a young woman are impossible to comprehend and yet she devoted the rest of her life to overcoming hatred and prejudice, promoting kindness, courage, understanding and resilience.”

Schloss was born in 1929 in Vienna, Austria, a month before Frank, and, like the Franks, her family fled to Amsterdam, the Netherlands to escape the Nazi regime. Their families met in Amsterdam and the two girls would sometimes play together, though Schloss recalled that they were not particularly close.

“I was a tomboy and she was so much more sophisticated,” Schloss told the Guardian in 2013. “We simply didn’t have the same interests.”

Her family went into hiding in 1942 on the same day as the Franks, and they remained concealed for two years until 1944, when someone betrayed them and they were sent to the Auschwitz death camp.

Schloss’ father, Erich Geiringer, and her older brother, Heinz, were both murdered there, leaving Eva and her mother, Fritzi, as the sole survivors of their family.

After the war, Fritzi became reacquainted with Otto Frank, Anne’s father, who had lost his wife and two daughters in the Holocaust, and they married, making Schloss the posthumous stepsister of her old friend.

Schloss settled in London where she met her husband, Zvi Schloss, and had three daughters – Jacky, Caroline and Sylvia.

It was only in 1988, after an exhibition dedicated to Anne Frank opened in London, that she began speaking publicly about the trauma she went through at Auschwitz.

“I was far from politics, but I realized that the world had not learned any lessons from the events of 1939 to 1945, that wars continued, that persecution, racism, intolerance still existed,” she said, according to the Anne Frank House museum in Amsterdam. “And then I began to share my experience, to call for changes in the world.”

From then on, Schloss dedicated her life to educating the world about the horrors of the Holocaust. She spoke in schools and universities, wrote three books – “Eva’s Story,” “After Auschwitz” and “The Promise” – and co-founded the Anne Frank Trust UK in 1991, which specifically aimed to educate children aged 9 to 15 about the dangers of antisemitism and other forms of prejudice.

Lingering showers Monday, small chances for rain Tuesday

Kraig Pakulski 0 32 Article rating: No rating

Happy Monday! Lingering showers are expected throughout the day with on and off again light rain. Skies remain overcast and winds will be blustery at times. Rainfall amounts will be minimal and will bring little to no impact. Marine conditions will be hazardous throughout mid-week. Most beaches are underneath a High Surf Advisory or Beach Hazard Statement. Large breaking waves and dangerous rip currents are expected. High temperatures rise into the 60s and 70s.

Another chance of rainfall appears Tuesday as low pressure moves over the area. Most places are around a 50-60% chance of rain, and all amounts look to be light, if any at all. This system begins to die off by the time it reaches our northern communities and may not have any rain left by the time it make it to the Central Coast.

Most dry conditions emerge Wednesday and hold through the extended forecast. This is much needed after the significant amounts of rain in previous weeks. Start planning some fun outdoor activities, we should be back to picture perfect weather by the end of the week. The weekend looks amazing with 60s, 70s and mostly sunny skies.

5 things to know for Jan. 5: Venezuela, Airspace closures, Divided Congress, California floods, Swiss bar fire

Forecasters predict that 2026 will bring the lowest gas prices since the Covid-19 pandemic. For many Americans, it may offer some relief amid rising costs for other essentials — like groceries and electricity.

Here’s what else you need to know to get up to speed and on with your day.

1⃣ Venezuela

Venezuela’s ousted President Nicolás Maduro is expected to make his first court appearance today in New York City following a US military operation that led to his capture. Maduro is facing charges that he and his associates conspired with narcoterrorists to ship thousands of tons of cocaine to the US. President Donald Trump told reporters Sunday that the US is now “in charge” of Venezuela, a claim Secretary of State Marco Rubio sought to temper, saying the administration is aiming for a democratic transition in the Latin American country. As protests spread worldwide and uncertainty mounts over what comes next, Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, has called for an “agenda of cooperation” with the US.

2⃣ Airspace closures

The US military operation that led to the capture of Nicolás Maduro triggered widespread travel disruptions after the FAA temporarily closed Caribbean airspace. Hundreds of flights were canceled over the weekend from popular vacation destinations, including Aruba and Puerto Rico, according to FlightAware. The FAA has since lifted the restrictions, and at least four major airlines — American, Delta, United and Southwest — are working to add more flights to help people return home during one of the busiest travel times of the year.

3⃣ Divided Congress

Congress returns from recess today amid bitter policy fights and the looming threat of a government shutdown at the end of the month. Lawmakers must also grapple with questions of military oversight after President Trump’s surprise strike in Venezuela, which removed Nicolás Maduro without notifying Congress. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune are now facing pressure from within their own party over whether to reassert legislative authority on war powers, all while navigating high-stakes votes on health care and government spending ahead of the fall midterms.

4⃣ California floods

Heavy rain and high tides have caused flooding in parts of Northern California, prompting road closures and rescues of people trapped in vehicles. Flooding has been reported in at least five counties — Marin, Sonoma, Alameda, San Mateo and San Francisco. These areas remain under a flood watch, with up to three inches of rain possible through tonight in some communities that have been drenched since Christmas, the National Weather Service said. After a mostly dry autumn, California has been hit by a string of powerful winter storms that have brought the state its wettest holiday season in years.

5⃣ Swiss bar fire

Teenagers as young as 14 and 15 were among the victims of the deadly New Year’s Eve fire at a ski resort bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, police said Sunday, raising questions about whether sufficient age checks were enforced

(CNN) — Evangeline Lilly says she has brain damage, months after fainting and hitting her head on a rock while at the beach.

“It’s late on January 1st. The first day of 2026. And I’m entering into this new year, the Year of the Horse, with some bad news about my concussion,” the Marvel star said in a video posted on Instagram on Friday.

She said she received results back from her brain scans and “almost every area in my brain is functioning at a decreased capacity.”

“So, I do have brain damage from the TBI,” or traumatic brain injury, “and possibly other factors going on,” Lilly continued.

“But, now, my job is to get to the bottom of that with the doctors and then embark on the hard work of fixing it, which I don’t look forward to because I feel like hard work is all I do,” the 46-year-old added, with a chuckle.

“But that’s okay. My cognitive decline since I smashed my face open has helped me to slow down and helped me to have a more restful finish to my 2025. I think this was the calmest, most restful Christmas holiday I have had maybe since I had children, so 14 years ago. So that’s a good thing,” Lilly continued.

“Feeling extraordinarily grateful and blessed to be able to play one more day, one more year on this beautiful living planet,” she said before thanking her followers “for caring.”

“You are a warrior,” her “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” co-star Michelle Pfeiffer commented under the post, adding a heart emoji. “Nothing—not even this will defeat you my friend.”

“Thanks, Mama,” replied Lilly, who plays Pfeiffer’s onscreen daughter, Hope, in the “Ant-Man” franchise.

“Sending you all my love and a massive hug,” wrote fellow “Lost” actress Rebecca Mader.

Lilly previously revealed in a blog post on Substack in May that she had “fainted at the beach. And fell face first into a boulder,” adding that she has experienced “fainting spells since I was a little girl.”

“The Hobbit” star has since been updating fans on Instagram on her recovery from what she described as “a big head injury” and “concussion” in a post in June.
