Yet Another Stranded Sailboat Crushed Before Dawn on Montecito Coast

MONTECITO, Calif. (KEYT) - At the crack of dawn, crews removed a boat from the Montecito coast where it came ashore this week.

The team from Marborg Industries went out at 5:30 Friday morning at the lowest tide to get to Butterfly Beach from an access point at Santa Barbara's East Beach.

The county's policy authorizes the removal of vessels that come ashore if the owner does not salvage it in a timely way.

Marborg works in collaboration with the non profit Heal The Ocean on these emergency responses. This is the second boat in a week to come ashore there.

On Monday another boat was removed. Heavy equipment was used to crush the latest vessel named "Riches to Rags" and haul it out. If it were left there, the tidal flow could cause the boat to break up.

That would send debris and possibly dangerous fluids into the ocean and on to the beach. The work was done in an hour with a hand crew picking up anything that came apart and fell on the sand.
