Santa Maria City Council Swears In Ricardo Batalla For Vacant District One Seat

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) - The city of Santa Maria has filled its vacant council seat after former District 1 representative Carlos Escobedo abruptly resigned last month.

Ricardo Batalla was appointed and sworn in at a city council meeting Tuesday night.

Numerous supporters, including his wife and kids spoke in support of Batalla, saying he prioritizes the community’s youth.

A few other residents shared their opinions and some alternative suggestions for how the council should handle the issue of the vacant seat.

One resident said he felt Santa Maria could afford the special election, to give the decision to the people who live in the district.

But at the end of the evening Batalla was formally appointed and sworn in.

After the obligatory photo ops and a few words of gratitude, he shook mayor Alice Patino’s hand, and took the seat.
