Jesus Gonzalez-Arteaga of Oxnard convicted of the continuous sexual assault of child he was related to and lived with for years

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – Jesus Gonzalez-Arteaga of Oxnard was convicted Thursday of six felony counts related to the sexual assault of a child he was related to and shared his home with for years.

A Ventura County jury found Gonzalez-Arteaga guilty on the following charges and special allegations:

Charges:

  • PC 288.5(a)–Continuous Sexual Abuse
  • PC 288.7(a)–Unlawful Act with a Child 10 Years and Under {Three Counts}
  • PC 261(a)(2)–Forcible Rape
  • PC 311.11(a)–Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material

Special Allegations:

  • PC 288.5(a)–Substantial Sexual Contact
  • CRC 4.41(a)(3)–Victim was Vulnerable
  • CRC 4.421(a)(11)–Defendant Took Advantage of a Position of Trust
  • CRC 4.421(a)(8)–Manner in which the Crime was Carried Out Indicates Planning, Sophistication, and Professionalism
  • PC 667.61(d)(6)–Personally Inflicted Great Bodily Injury
  • PC 12022.8–Sexual Offenses Inflicting Great Bodily Injury
  • PC 667.61(d)(7)–Sex Crimes Aggravated Circumstances
  • PC 667.61(j)(1)–Victim Under the Age of 14
  • PC 667.6(d)(1)– Prior Consecutive Sentence Imposed

The aggravating circumstance makes Gonzalez-Arteaga's upcoming sentence for his crimes a mandatory term of life in prison without the eligibility of parole noted the Ventura County District Attorney's Office in a press release Friday regarding the conviction.

On Mar. 12, 2024, around 10 a.m., investigators with the Oxnard Police Department Family Protection Unit were contacted by the Santa Paula Police Department regarding an 11-year-old female sexual assault survivor stated Oxnard Police Department.

According to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, further investigation revealed that Gonzalez-Arteaga had been abusing the child between 2018 and 2024, starting when she was six-years-old.

She initially told a trusted family member before sharing what happened with local law enforcement detailed the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

Gonzalez-Arteaga had access to the girl through a familial relationship and because they shared a household added the local prosecutor's office.

"The defendant committed the ultimate betrayal of a child he was supposed to protect," said Senior Deputy District Attorney Twyla Atmore who prosecuted the case. "Although the victim will likely suffer with the memories of her abuse for the rest of her life, the jury's swift and just verdict ensures the defendant will never hurt another child."

Gonzalez-Arteaga fled during the investigation but, on Apr. 6,2024, around 1 p.m., he was located and taken into custody without incident in the 1300 block of Cachuma Avenue in Ventura detailed the Oxnard Police Department.

According to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, Gonzalez-Arteaga is next due in court for a sentencing hearing on May 7 of this year where he faces a mandatory life sentence plus 91 years and eight months and he remains in custody without bail.
