Nipomo High School wrestler wins national championship, twin sister earns top 10 finish

FARGO, N.D. (KEYT) - Nipomo High School wrestler Taya Maumausolo Matagi earned a national championship on Saturday with a victory at the 2026 U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals inside the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota.

Competing at 235 pounds in the 16U division, the soon-to-be junior defeated Maycee Hales of Utah 9-4.

Also in the tournament, Maumausolo Matagi's twin sister Tasi Maumausolo Matagi earned a position on the championship podium with a 7th place finish in the 190 pound 16U division.

With their impressive accomplishments on the national stage, the two sisters each earned All-American status.

Taya Maumausolo Matagi was the lone California wrestler to win an individual title in the 11 different weight classes.

Behind her performance, Team California earned a fifth place finish in the 16U Women’s Team Division.

Earlier this year, both Taya Maumausolo Matagi and Tasi Maumausolo Matagi capatured individual championships to help lead Nipomo to the program's first ever CIF-Central Section team title.
