Democrat Chedrick Greene’s win in Michigan state Senate election gives the party another over-performance

(CNN) — Michigan Democrats on Tuesday won a special election for a state Senate seat in another party over-performance after the district was almost evenly divided in the last presidential election.

Democratic firefighter Chedrick Greene defeated GOP lawyer Jason Tunney for a seat to determine whether Democrats would retain control of the state Senate. With an estimated 93% of votes in, Greene led Tunney by 19 points.

Michigan was one of the hardest-fought states in the presidential election and remains a top battleground in the midterms, home to competitive Senate and governor’s races. Former Vice President Kamala Harris carried the state Senate district by less than 1 percentage point in 2024.

Greene’s victory was the most recent example of Democrats exceeding their 2024 margins in special elections across the country, a trend that has them feeling upbeat about their chances in the midterms.

“We delivered this decisive victory by listening and speaking to the things keeping everyday people up at night — worries about affordability, safety, and freedom,” Greene said in his victory speech.

Tunney conceded the special election and said in a statement that it was “only the halfway point,” alluding to the fact that he and Greene could meet again in the November election.

The candidates in Tuesday’s contest were vying to fill a seat that has been vacant since its former occupant, now-Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet, gave it up to enter Congress in January 2025. She campaigned with Greene, as did Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Greene ran on his background as a Marine veteran and fire captain, promising to lower the cost of living. One of his ads depicted him putting out a Dumpster fire tagged with the labels “higher rents,” “job loss” and “price gouging.”

Masks, movies and solo deck walks: life aboard a hantavirus-hit cruise ship

By Hira Humayun, CNN

(CNN) — Barely a month ago, they were embarking on a voyage of adventure to some of the world’s most remote islands. Encounters with whales, dolphins and penguins awaited; landscapes of icy expanses, towering cliffs and rolling green hills beckoned.

Now they are isolating in their cabins, trapped aboard a ship anchored in the Atlantic, taking what measures they can to shield themselves from an outbreak of a deadly virus.

For the nearly 150 passengers aboard the MV Hondius, the coming days are full of uncertainty.

Following an outbreak of the hantavirus – which causes fatigue, fever, and can even lead to organ failure and death – three passengers have died. Another three who are thought to have been infected are to be evacuated in the coming hours.

Everyone else must wait, at least for now. Spain has agreed to receive the ship in the Canary Islands in three to four days. Until then, the boat will remain anchored off the coast of Praia, Cape Verde, while those aboard do their best not to fall ill.

In the meantime, many of them have been trying to make the best of the uncertainty, some of them offering a glimpse into their lives through social media posts.

Kasem Hato, a travel vlogger, has posted videos from the ship’s deck that look out toward a distant land mass.

“What you can see in front of us over there is the country of Cape Verde, but we are not allowed to disembark there,” he says in Arabic as he points to the coastline of the west African country – which was supposed to be the ship’s final stop.

Passengers have been told to isolate and strict hygiene measures are in place. Yet, despite the circumstances, the tour operator Oceanwide Expeditions says passengers remain composed.

“Most of the people on the ship are taking the matter very calmly,” says Hato, in one of the videos he has posted from the deck overlooking the water and from inside his cabin.

He also brushes off any fears of the outbreak escalating.

“This virus is not new to the world. If it were going to become an epidemic, it would have happened a long time ago,” he says.

While human-to-human transmission is suspected to have taken place on the ship, Maria Van Kerkhove, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) acting director of epidemic and pandemic management, believes this is likely to have occurred only between very close contacts, such as married couples and people providing medical care. The risk to the general public is very low, she says.

Two of passengers who died were a married couple. Among those who are ill and expected to be evacuated soon is a person “associated” with the third dead person, according to authorities, and another is a doctor.

While passengers are taking the situation seriously, they are not panicking, Hato told CNN.

“We all feel very sorry for those who passed away as we shared with them a beautiful journey and send their families our condolences,” he said.

Another passenger who spoke to CNN, Jake Rosmarin, said that apart from those who had fallen ill, “everyone else onboard is doing well and remains in good spirits.” He stressed the efforts the crew have made to keep passengers safe, informed and comfortable.

Wildlife photographer Alejandra Rendon also commended the crew for “managing such an unlikely and unfortunate situation.”

The crew are spending the time taking care of passengers and disinfecting the vessel, according to the tour operator and the WHO.

Passengers are also doing their part.

Hato told CNN the ship’s captain and management are keeping passengers updated on new information as it comes in.

Wealthy Latin Americans are turning this exclusive European neighborhood from ‘rich to richer’

Madrid (CNN) — Every major city worth its salt typically boasts its own luxury area: New York has Fifth Avenue, Paris has the Champs-Élysées and in Madrid an area known as the “Golden Mile” stands out.

“Golden Mile” is a network of streets located in the Spanish capital’s Salamanca district where some of the most exclusive clothing and jewelry brands in the world are concentrated. It is an environment that has attracted foreigners eager to invest in housing, and a large part of them come from Latin America.

“It’s like an open-air shopping mall,” Cristina Lanzarot, the director of the Salamanca Neighborhood Merchants Association in Madrid, with about a hundred premium stores in the area, told CNN. “If not the most special (shopping mall), it is one of the most special in the world.”

It’s not just the “Golden Mile” foreigners are flocking to. This trend extends to the six neighborhoods that make up the Salamanca district, making it noticeable when walking through its streets, where the elegant atmosphere enraptures pedestrians with its wide avenues and majestic buildings.

The real shock comes with the prices — not just the cost of an afternoon of shopping indulgences, but of housing, too. This district has the highest price per square meter in all of Madrid: more than $11,500, compared with a citywide average of $6,800, according to figures compiled by the Madrid City Council in February.

Those are figures that would scare off many Spanish buyers but are within the reach of foreign fortunes, which have taken on growing importance in the district over the past decade. So much so that they have helped drive what Tarek Mure, an adviser at the real estate firm Gilmar in Salamanca, describes as an “unusual” form of gentrification. He says, “it’s not gentrification from poor to rich, but from rich to richer.”

Foreign-born residents made up 18% of the district’s population in 2015; by 2025, they accounted for nearly 30%, according to city council data.

What stands out is that of the district’s 44,680 foreign residents, nearly half — 21,740 people — come from South American countries. “Now, instead of going to Miami, these fortunes are coming to Madrid,” Lanzarot says. Mexicans total 3,549 residents in the district, according to 2025 data from the Madrid City Council.

Lanzarot cites “the beauty of its neoclassical architecture” and “the language and the security there is, the possibility it gives you to walk around calmly” as some of the reasons that have caused the influx of foreign wealth.

What the new buyers in Madrid are like

To break into the real estate market in this Madrid district, buyers need deep pockets, and according to Mure, these Latin American arrivals come with exactly that.

In his telling, they are “enormous” and “impossible to match,” a point he illustrates with a recent sale of a 460-square-meter (4,950 square-feet) apartment on Plaza de la Independencia — home to the iconic Puerta de Alcalá — that sold for more than $18 million.

“We’re talking about $35,000 or $39,000 per square meter, for a house that is not even new and that they have bought as a second residence,” Mure details, adding that buyers are spending between $2.3 million and $4.6 million on average per property.

These wealthy buyers also tend to share a taste for certain features: exterior-facing homes, open kitchens and living areas, and large bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, since, as Mure notes, “they have an active social life, and they are always inviting people over.”

Key moments from CNN’s California governor primary debate

(CNN) — The seven candidates for California governor moved aggressively during CNN’s primary debate Tuesday night to distinguish themselves with just under a month left in the race and some voters already receiving ballots.

With increasing urgency to shake up a long-unsettled contest, many of the people on stage declared themselves the “only candidate” to carry certain distinctions. They picked fresh fights with each other – and in particular, former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra – after prior debates that were more civil.

“I can’t believe that on a stage with 30 minutes of interrupting and bickering and name-calling and shouting and disrespect … that anyone wants to talk about my temperament,” said Democratic former Rep. Katie Porter at one point, alluding to the scrutiny she has faced over videos of her berating staff and a journalist.

The debate featured two Republicans — Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and Trump-backed conservative commentator Steve Hilton — and five Democrats: Porter, Becerra, billionaire investor Tom Steyer, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan and former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Democrats are dominant in California, but the top two vote-getters regardless of party will advance in the June 2 nonpartisan primary. That’s forced Democrats to mix it up not just with each other, but also with the Republicans as they try to stand out and make the November ballot.

Here are takeaways from Tuesday night’s debate:

Democrats have to explain why they should remain in power

The candidates were asked why Democrats should receive another four years in charge of California after four terms in the governor’s mansion, even as the state is tied for having the country’s highest unemployment rate and has the highest average gas prices in the US.

The Democrats on stage struggled to articulate what’s going right in California.

Becerra blamed the state’s issues on Trump, saying that gas prices are up due to the war in Iran and grocery costs are high due to tariffs. Steyer said he would take on “special interests” to lower the cost of healthcare, housing and energy. Porter said California “does need to make changes,” and Mahan said the state deserves better.

“I’m the only Democrat in this race who has challenged the establishment within my own party to demand better results,” said Mahan, a moderate who has criticized California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The two Republicans in the race were quick to point out their rivals’ lack of positive descriptions of the state.

“Why do Democrats deserve it? You just listened to probably 10-15 minutes of why they don’t,” Bianco said. “We are going to get nothing but the same from them. They brought us here.”

Katie Porter gets into the shot

One candidate who has worked especially hard to break through in the homestretch is Porter. She was an early leader in the field but lost some ground last year after a video came out showing her yelling at a staffer in 2021.

She released a TV ad this week that made light of the incident, concluding with her asking people in the background to “please get out of my shot.” That was the same request she made of the staffer in 2021, albeit less politely.

At Tuesday’s debate, she emphasized that she has repeatedly taken responsibility and apologized for the incident. Then she
