United Airlines Boeing 767 collides with truck and highway streetlight as it lands at Newark airport

(CNN) — A plane landing at Newark Liberty International Airport hit a streetlight and a tractor-trailer on the nearby highway on Sunday, injuring the truck’s driver, according to the New Jersey State Police.

The United Airlines Boeing 767, flying from Venice, Italy, was going more than 160 miles an hour when it crossed over the New Jersey Turnpike, just outside of the airport, according to flight tracking site Flightradar24.

A preliminary investigation shows a tire from the plane’s landing gear and the underside of the plane “collided with a pole and a tractor-trailer. The pole then struck a Jeep,” New Jersey State Police spokesman SFC Charles Marchan said in a statement. “The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital.”

Dashcam video from the truck showed the driver traveling along the road as the sound of the plane’s engines grew louder. Suddenly, the plane’s landing gear tires struck the truck, shaking it and sending shards of glass flying.

Warren Boardley of Baltimore was heading north on the turnpike to deliver bread products to a Newark airport depot when the incident occurred, Chuck Paterakis, senior vice president of transportation for Schmidt Bakery and co-owner of H&S Family of Bakeries, told CNN.

Boardley sustained cuts to his arm from broken glass but did not suffer serious injuries and was able to pull over safely, according to Paterakis, who added Boardley is expected to be released from the hospital later tonight.

Patrick Oyulu was driving on the highway when he saw the low flying plane and felt a huge gust of wind go over him.

“It was just coming directly in front of the truck … I just saw smoke and debris,” he told CNN. “I think (the truck was) trying to evasively maneuver out of its way or something, but they were cornered.”

More than 200 passengers and 10 crew members were on board the plane, the airline said.

“The aircraft landed safely, taxied to the gate normally and no passengers or crew were injured,” United said in a statement. “Our maintenance team is evaluating damage to the aircraft.”

“We will conduct a rigorous flight safety investigation into the incident and our crew has been removed from service as part of the process,” United said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is sending an investigator to Newark and will analyze the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder as part of their investigation, the agency announced.

Runway 29, where the plane landed, starts less than 400 feet from the edge of the busy New Jersey Turnpike. It is not always used, but when wind conditions are right, it can see numerous landings, which can startle drivers as planes pass at low altitudes over the highway.

The pilots and air traffic control did not appear to be aware the plane had struck the light pole upon landing, according to recordings of air traffic control communications captured by LiveATC.net.

The 767 was given instructions to taxi to the gate as other aircraft continued to land on the same runway.

(CNN) — Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is in critical but stable condition in the hospital, his spokesperson said Sunday.

“Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and he’s fighting with that same level of strength as we speak,” spokesperson Ted Goodman said in a statement on X.

The statement does not say why the 81-year-old is in the hospital.

Giuliani told viewers Friday on his X show “America’s Mayor Live” that his “voice is a little under the weather, so I won’t be able to speak as loudly as I usually do.” He’s seen coughing a few times on the streamed program.

The most recent episode of “The Rudy Giuliani Show,” streamed on LindellTV, is from Wednesday. Giuliani missed several episodes in April but worked Monday through Friday as recently as March.

Former New York Mayor Eric Adams, who left office last year, wished Giuliani “strength, good health, and a full recovery,” his spokesperson Todd Shapiro said in a statement on his behalf, adding the “moment rises above politics.”

“From his years as a federal prosecutor to leading New York City through its darkest day on 9/11, he stood with this city when it needed him most,” the statement said. “Public service at that level demands sacrifice, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the people you serve.”

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Giuliani is a “True Warrior and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City.”

“What a tragedy that he was treated so badly by the Radical Left Lunatics, Democrats ALL — AND HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING! They cheated on the Elections, fabricated hundreds of stories, did anything possible to destroy our Nation, and now, look at Rudy. So sad!” Trump said in the post about Giuliani being hospitalized.

Giuliani, Trump’s former personal attorney whose leadership of New York in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks earned him the nickname “America’s mayor,” has faced a slew of legal and financial troubles since the 2020 election.

He has pleaded not guilty to state criminal charges against him related to the election subversion scheme in Arizona. Prosecutors dropped a similiar case against Giuliani and others in Georgia last year. The two former Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, also obtained a $148 million defamation judgment against him for false allegations he made about them after the 2020 election.

He was disbarred in July 2024 in New York over his efforts to challenge the 2020 election results.

Still, he has been receiving support from Trump, with the president Read more

Giuliani was hospitalized in August after he was injured in a car accident in New Hampshire, his head of security and the New Hampshire State Police said. Three people, including Giuliani, were taken to the hospital by ambulance with “non-life threatening injuries,” the police said.

In 2020, the former mayor spent four days in the hospital battling coronavirus.

United passenger accused of attacking flight attendant, trying to access cockpit

By Cindy Von Quednow, Aaron Cooper, CNN

(CNN) — A man was detained after apparently attacking a flight attendant and trying to get into the cockpit on a flight as it landed at Newark Liberty International Airport Saturday, authorities told CNN.

The 48-year-old suspect was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation, the Port Authority Police Department told CNN.

One person on the plane refused medical attention and no other injuries were reported, police said.

The incident was reported as an altercation and audio from ATC.com indicates the suspect attacked a flight attendant.

“United 1837, we are declaring an emergency. It seems like someone just attacked one of our flight attendants,” the pilot is heard saying in the audio.

The pilot again says: “A gentleman just attacked one of the flight attendants and trying to open the forward main cabin door.”

“Oh, my God,” ground control is heard saying.

The flight took off from the Dominican Republic and landed safely at Newark on Saturday evening, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

There were 170 passengers and six crew members on the Boeing 737 Max 8 plane, according to United Airlines.

“We’re grateful to our crew for their efforts to ensure the safety of fellow crew members and our customers,” the airline said in a statement to CNN.

The FAA will investigate the incident, the agency said.

So far this year, airlines have reported nearly 500 unruly passenger incidents, according to the FAA.

Any passenger who assaults, threatens, intimidates or interferes with airline crew members can lead to penalties of up to $43,658 per violation, according to the FAA.
