(CNN) — It was a big night for tennis as both Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka won individual awards at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid on Monday.

Alcaraz, who was sporting a brace on his wrist, opened up about his brilliant 2025 season, as well as his fitness hopes heading into the French Open next month, after being named Sportsman of the Year.

Meanwhile, Sabalenka was named Sportswoman of the Year as she reflected on the lessons she learned from a “crazy” 2025.

Alcaraz injury update

As world No. 2 Alcaraz arrived at the awards ceremony, everyone was keeping an eye out for his right wrist. Reports emerged last week that the Spaniard was suffering from an injury after he withdrew from the Barcelona Open then subsequently pulled out of the Madrid Open, and those concerns were confirmed after he was seen with his wrist immobilized on Monday.

Speaking to CNN Sports’ Amanda Davies, Alcaraz said he was still waiting to find out the extent of the injury and hoped he would be back on court soon, with Roland Garros fast approaching.

“I could be better, to be honest,” he said. “These things happen. It is hopefully nothing serious, I don’t know yet.

“It’s not about if you get injured, it’s about when and how you come back, so I’m just trying to take care of myself as good as I can and trying to be on court soon again.”

Alcaraz has continued his brilliant form from last year into this season, winning the Australian Open at the start of the year (where he completed a career grand slam) after clinching both the French and US Opens in 2025.

But it wasn’t always smooth sailing last campaign, with the 22-year-old having to take a break early in the year to reset his mentality. The time he took away from the sport, he said, helped him rediscover his passion as he stormed back with a fresh approach.

“I came back with a lot of joy again, happy to step on the court again,” he said. “And I think after that, when you’re feeling good with yourself, when you feel happy with how you’re going to approach a tournament or a match, everything comes after all.”

Looking ahead to this season, he said the goal is naturally to win every grand slam he can, although the Spaniard is fully aware of how hard that feat is.

Instead, he’s just focused on being ready for every tournament, partly driven by his ongoing rivalry with world No. 1 Jannik S

Seven arrested in London over foiled arson attack on Jewish community

By Lauren Kent, CNN

London (CNN) — British counterterrorism police arrested eight people in connection with an investigation into suspected arson attacks in London, including a foiled plot to potentially target a venue related to the Jewish community, police said Tuesday.

Seven of the arrests, conducted within the last 48 hours, are part of what police called “a proactive investigation into alleged conspiracy to commit arson.”

“At this time, while it is believed that the intended target of this conspiracy is a venue related to the Jewish community, the specific target or venue is not known,” London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Arrests were carried out in the English towns of Harpenden and Stevenage, and near the city of Birmingham, as well as the west London suburb of Ealing.

Police said that since the March 23 arson attack in the Golders Green neighborhood of London, in which several ambulances belonging to a Jewish volunteer rescue organization were set on fire outside a synagogue, a total of eight people have been charged with arson-related offences and 13 people remain in police custody or on bail under investigation.

“Our message is clear, we will not tolerate this intimidation of our communities, and will pursue those responsible,” said Vicki Evans, the police’s senior national coordinator of counterterrorism policing.

“One of our key lines of inquiry is whether criminal proxies – that is to say people being paid money to carry out a crime, are being used to commit any of these arsons,” Evans added.

It comes as Britain’s Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis warned on Sunday that a “sustained campaign of violence and intimidation against the Jewish community of the UK is gathering momentum,” pointing to a series of arson and attempted arson attacks targeting the community.

Mirvis said a synagogue in Kenton in northwest London was targeted in a “cowardly arson attack,” also noting an attack against a synagogue in the north London neighborhood of Finchley last Wednesday and an attempted attack on another building in Hendon, in northwest London, last Friday.

An unintended consequence of US immigration policy: Some fans are skipping the World Cup in the US

(CNN) — Steve Schwarzbach has attended every World Cup event since 2006.

He had no apprehensions about attending the games in countries such as South Africa and Brazil which can have a reputation — fairly or not — of being dangerous for tourists. Given the scale of the international event, he trusted that local police would protect World Cup visitors like himself.

“In South Africa and Brazil, I felt very safe because they had so many police, army and security that I didn’t have any fears of going out,” Schwarzbach tells CNN Travel.

But this year, the German national has made the conscious decision to boycott the games in the United States. Of all the host countries over the last two decades, the Frankfurt resident said he is most fearful about the prospect of traveling to the US.

“You see the ICE people going around and just pulling people from the streets just because they look foreign and you don’t get the feeling that anybody would protect me, you know?” he says.

Schwarzbach is also half Korean and half German, a profile he fears could make him a target. “I look more Asian than German,” he said. “I wouldn’t feel safe.”

As a Participating Member Association (PMA) Supporter, or superfan, Schwarzbach was able to score two tickets for $1,600 to the quarter-final and semi-final matches, games that are scheduled to be played in US stadiums.

PMAs are national soccer associations. Each soccer club sets their own eligibility criteria for establishing superfans, but usually, PMA Supporters have paid a membership fee and have attended both home and away games.

After seeing the ICE raids and learning that the US government is considering vetting visitor social media activity from the last five years, he decided the trip wasn’t worth the risk. He eventually declined the credit card transactions.

Schwarzbach is one of several international soccer fans who spoke to CNN Travel about their decision to skip the World Cup games in the US, amid violent ICE raids in immigrant communities, the killing of two Americans by federal agents, and a long, controversial list of American foreign policies.

But the sporting event held every four years is no stranger to controversy. Much remains to be seen about how the tournament unfolds in the United States, which is co-hosting the World Cup with Canada and Mexico.

Mixed feelings around the games

Calls to boycott the games, which run from June 11 to July 19, have grown louder over the last few months. An online petition in the Netherlands urging the national soccer team to withdraw from the games drew more than 174,000 signatures. On Facebook, a “Boycott FIFA World Cup 2026 in USA” group has more than 25,800 members, while discussions across social media platforms and online forums are replete with pledges to boycott matches in the US — and some vow to not even watch the televised matches.

Earlier this year, ex-FIFA president Sepp Blatter endorsed the idea of a fan-led boycott movement, while O
