GOP hardliners wavering on support for Bondi subpoena after testy briefing

US Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche arrive for a closed-door briefing for members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee

(CNN) — Conservative hardliners who supported subpoenaing Attorney General Pam Bondi in the House Oversight Committee’s Jeffrey Epstein probe are now indicating that they are open to changing their position after Bondi met with the panel for a briefing that turned contentious with Democrats.

GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert told CNN on Thursday that she’s “absolutely” considering withdrawing her support for the subpoena because it “is absolutely shameful to have her come in there willingly to answer anything that we want to ask, and to be treated that way. It just shows what’s to come.”

Bondi’s voluntary meeting with committee members behind closed doors on Wednesday erupted when Democrats stormed out of the room in frustration, saying she would not commit to complying with her subpoena.

Boebert told Bondi that she was “embarrassed” that she had voted to subpoena her for a deposition during the briefing, according to two sources familiar with the exchange. The congresswoman also said she would withdraw the subpoena if she could, the sources added.

CNN has reached out to Boebert for comment on the closed-door meeting.

Five Republicans on the panel voted earlier this month to subpoena Bondi.

House Oversight Chair James Comer told reporters on Thursday that he plans to talk to his fellow Republicans about what the next steps are, but indicated he plans on honoring the subpoena. Comer was not one of the five Republicans to vote for the subpoena and has said he didn’t think it was necessary.

“I haven’t talked to Republicans, I’m sure I’ll give them a call this weekend,” Comer said. “I don’t know what is going to happen. We’ll talk to the Republicans. But as of now, I plan on moving forward with all of our subpoenas.”

Comer said if he were to rescind Bondi’s subpoena he would have to talk to counsel because he is not sure how the process would be handled.

Boebert said she hasn’t talked to the White House “at all” about her support for the subpoena, but slammed Democrats for how they handled Bondi’s appearance on Capitol Hill.

“They claim that no one is above the law, and when someone says they’ll follow it, they’re like, no, no. I know on our side that’s BS, so it must be BS when you say it right, and the way they behaved, it makes me not want to support a subpoena to force her to come in and be treated the way she was treated yesterday, it was really embarrassing,” she said.

Rep. Tim Burchett, another Republican who voted to subpoena Bondi, implied Wednesday’s proceedings made him frustrated with Democrats on the panel, calling their walkout “all staged.”

“She was there, they had an opportunity, and they blew it,” he said.

Pressed if Bondi should still answer to the subpoena, Burchett responded, “It’s up to her. We’re not going to get much out of this deal,” lamenting the handling of the Epstein files.

“You know, if we’d have just gone a little slower, we would have gotten there a little faster,” he said.

Epstein ties present potential hurdle for Trump’s Fed chair nominee

Kevin Warsh speaks at the IMF headquarters in Washington

By Elisabeth Buchwald, CNN

(CNN) — Kevin Warsh’s path to becoming the next Federal Reserve chair is already rocky — and it may be approaching a major roadblock, casting fresh uncertainty about who will be leading the central bank at a critical moment for the economy.

Nearly two months have passed since President Donald Trump announced Warsh’s nomination, and with two months until Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s term as chair expires, no Senate confirmation hearing date has been set.

Two main factors have been standing in the way — and now, there may be a third.

On Thursday, Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren sent a letter to Warsh demanding more details about the extent of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Emails sent to or from an account associated with Epstein released by the Department of Justice suggest Warsh and his wife, Jane Lauder, were invited to events Epstein helped organize.

One was in St. Barthélemy around Christmas in 2010; another was a dinner in New York. The guest list for the dinner includes Epstein, Warsh, Lauder, Trump and his wife Melania, and some of the president’s children.

It’s unclear from the batch of email exchanges released in January who attended the events. Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing and being mentioned in the files is not an indication of that.

“As the Senate considers your nomination to serve as Chair of the Fed, it is essential that Congress and the public fully understand the extent of any interactions or relationship you had with Jeffrey Epstein,” Warren, the highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee, said in a letter to Warsh. The committee vets Fed nominees and determines whether they can advance to the full Senate.

Warren asked Warsh, a former Fed governor, whether he attended the two events or any others that Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell were at. She also requested records of any communications Warsh may have had with Maxwell or Epstein.

The White House did not respond to CNN’s inquiry about Warsh.

The other hurdles between Warsh and the Fed

A Department of Justice criminal probe into Powell, for which Trump voiced support on Thursday, has been a major source of contention.

DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro vowed to appeal the case, which a federal judge tossed last week, saying in an unsealed opinion that the government “produced essentially zero evidence to suspect Chair Powell of a crime.”

Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, also a member of the Senate Banking Committee, has pledged to block Warsh’s nomination from advancing until the DOJ drops its probe into Powell.

Tillis likely holds the deciding vote on the committee comprised of 13 Republicans and 11 Democrats. A simple majority is needed to advance to the full Senate.

Additionally, the committee has not received necessary paperwork from Warsh, including financial and ethics disclosures, a person familiar with the matter told CNN.

Ultimately, the chances that Warsh will be confirmed by the time Powell’s eight-year tenure as chair

Central Coast Communities Re-Evaluate César Chávez Legacy Amid Allegations

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) - Communities across the Central Coast are grappling with difficult questions following recent allegations surrounding labor leader César Chávez.

Recent reports allege that César Chávez sexually abused women, including some who were minors, during his lifetime. Among the women reportedly affected was Dolores Huerta, the legendary labor leader and co-founder of the United Farm Workers, who worked closely with Chávez for decades.

On February 28, 2026, Dolores Huerta made an appearance and spoke with students at Oxnard College. Huerta came forward with experiences following an investigation released by the New York Times on Wednesday.

“I have kept this secret long enough. My silence ends here,” Huerta.

From schools and streets to murals and public spaces in the Central Coast, Chávez’ name is deeply embedded throughout the region. He was long seen as a symbol of farmworker rights and Latino empowerment.

From down south in Oxnard, Chávez grew up in the La Colonia neighborhood where he worked local fields. In 1958, he returned back to Oxnard to organize farmer workers and established a Community Service Organization chapter, and advocated for citizenship and voting rights.

Oxnard has highlighted Chávez through street names, murals, and Schools such as César Chávez Elementary School, César Chávez Street, and a mural in Colonia Park.

In Santa Barbara as well has Calle César Chávez, and in northern county, you can find street names named after him as well.

UCSB distinguished Professor of Chicana and Chicano studies, Aida Hurtado, spoke more on the instant reaction the community took once hearing about the allegations.

"We have to give Latinos, Latinx people credit for reacting so quickly. And, and just going to it, I mean, it's like within an hour people were taking things down," said Hurtado. "The hope is the reaction. There's no doubt. People just said it. She says it happened. We believe you. And that in itself is empowerment. We're not splitting up. We still have a lot of work to do, especially with the farmworker community. We don't want this as a distraction, even though we're acknowledging it. Our purpose is very clear. And I think that, it almost reaffirms our purpose."

Assemblywoman Alexandra Macedo has introduced legislation to rename the March 31 state holiday currently honoring Chávez to 'Farmworker Day.'

“Farmworkers are essential to our everyday lives — from the food we eat to the economy we enjoy,” Macedo said. “The fight for dignity in the fields was never about one person... it is about the millions of workers who sweat, toil and aspire for a better life.”

Congressman Salud Carbajal expressed concern over the allegations, saying he stands with victims and emphasized the importance of recognizing farmworkers as a whole rather than focusing on one individual.
