January 6 commemorative plaque appears in Capitol after years of delay

(CNN) — A new plaque honoring the heroism of Capitol Police officers during the January 6, 2021, attack by a mob supportive of President Donald Trump has quietly been installed at the US Capitol after years of delay.

The installation of the plaque early Saturday morning, which was first reported by the Washington Post, did not feature a formal ceremony or remarks. It also came years after it was required by federal law to be installed by 2023.

“On behalf of a grateful Congress, this plaque honors the extraordinary individuals who bravely protected and defended this symbol of democracy on January 6, 2021,” the plaque reads. “Their heroism will never be forgotten.”

It lists the several local police departments and federal agencies that responded that day. Next to it is a QR code which leads to a file with the names of all the officers who were present.

The plaque has been placed at the end of a hallway, just inside an entrance on the West Front of the Capitol, which is not open to the public.

Since Trump’s return to office, the president and his Republican allies have either ignored the January 6 riot or recast the day’s events and diminished the level of violence that occurred. In one of the first acts of his second term, Trump pardoned over 1,000 rioters who were charged in connection to the attack.

In the absence of a formal plaque, many Democrats had poster copies hanging outside their congressional offices, CNN previously reported.

The office of House Speaker Mike Johnson, whose direction was needed to install the plaque, previously told CNN that the law authorizing the plaque “is not implementable,” but did not elaborate on why.

“If Democrats are serious about commemorating the work of USCP officers, they are free to work with the appropriate committees of jurisdiction to develop a framework for proper vetting and consideration,” a spokesperson for the speaker said at the time.

CNN has asked the offices of Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for comment on the installation of the plaque Saturday.

Last year, two police officers who defended the Capitol on January 6 sued the Architect of the Capitol to have a memorial be installed.

In the lawsuit, Harry Dunn, formerly of the US Capitol Police, and DC Metropolitan Police officer Daniel Hodges slammed Trump’s allies in Congress and beyond for attempting to recast the events of January 6 and accused them of “rewriting” history.

Hodges, in a post on X on Saturday, called the installation “a fine stopgap.”

“(T)hey are not yet within full compliance of the law and the weight of a judicial ruling would help secure the memorial against future tampering. Our lawsuit persists,” Hodges wrote in the post.

According to their lawsuit, the law directs that the plaque be placed “on the western front” of the Capitol.

The now-defunct House January 6 select committee’s final report concluded that Trump incited the violence at the Capitol that day.

Mustangs improve to 6-7 on the season

HONOLULU, Hawai'i — Alejandro Garza and Cam Hoiland belted their first home runs of the year while Griffin Naess scattered three hits over 6 1/3 innings as Cal Poly began defense of its 2025 Big West Conference baseball championship with a 6-2 triumph over Hawai'i on Friday night inside sold-out Les Murakami Stadium.

Garza smashed a two-run shot to left field to snap a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning and Hoiland hit his round-tripper over the right-field wall for an insurance run in the ninth frame as the Mustangs improved to 6-7 overall.

Hawai'i, held to just three hits in its 13th consecutive home game to start the season, slipped to 8-5.

Naess (2-1) threw 117 pitches for the victory, issuing two walks while striking out five. Chris Downs secured the final two outs in the seventh and Nick Bonn tossed two scoreless frames for his second save.

The loss went to Isaiah Magdaleno (1-1), who gave up four runs and six hits over five innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

Cal Poly scored single runs in the second and third frames. Casey Murray Jr. tripled leading off the second and came home on Ryan Tayman's sacrifice fly to left field. Nick Castellon drew a one-out walk in the third and eventually scored on Hoiland's RBI single.

Hawai'i tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth as Draven Nushida and Kamana Nahaku produced RBI singles.

Garza followed a leadoff double from Jake Downing by blasting a first-pitch home run, breaking the 2-2 tie in the fifth, and the Mustangs tallied insurance runs in the final two frames to win going away.

Tayman was hit by a pitch opening the eighth and trotted home on a run-scoring single by Gavin Spiridonoff. With one out in the ninth, Hoiland made it 6-2 with his home run to right field.

Coming off a hamstring injury, Hoiland finished with three hits and a pair of RBIs to spark Cal Poly's nine-hit offensive attack. Spiridonoff added two singles.

Second game of the weekend series will be played Saturday at 8:35 p.m. PST with junior right-hander Laif Palmer (1-0, 7.36 ERA) on the mound for Cal Poly, facing Hawai'i junior right-hander Hekili Robello (3-0, 0.95 ERA).

Sunday's series finale begins at 4:05 p.m. PDT.
