David and Victoria Beckham send birthday messages to estranged son Brooklyn

By Jack Guy, CNN

London (CNN) — David and Victoria Beckham have both posted birthday messages to their estranged son, Brooklyn Peltz Beckham, extending what appears to be an olive branch amid a very public feud.

The couple took to Instagram to wish Peltz Beckham well, both posting the same image of themselves in a swimming pool with a young Brooklyn in between them.

“Happy birthday Brooklyn, we love you so much,” the caption on Victoria Beckham’s post reads.

Former soccer star David also posted an old black-and-white photo of himself with his oldest son.

“27 today. Happy Birthday Bust. We love you x,” reads the caption, which uses a childhood nickname for Brooklyn.

And Spice Girl-turned-fashion-designer Victoria did similar, uploading a black-and-white image of herself swinging her toddler son in her arms.

“Happy 27th birthday Brooklyn, I love you so much,” she wrote.

The posts come after Peltz Beckham exposed the depth of his rift with his parents in a blistering Instagram post in January, which confirmed a long-rumored family relationship breakdown.

He said he does not want to reconcile with his famous parents, and criticized their “performative social media posts.”

Peltz Beckham also accused them of trying to “ruin” his marriage to American heiress and actress Nicola Peltz, daughter of businessman Nelson Peltz and former model Claudia Heffner Peltz.

“For my entire life, my parents have controlled narratives in the press about our family,” Peltz Beckham wrote, adding that his parents had been “trying endlessly to ruin” his relationship with his wife, since before their wedding in 2022.

He adopted a double-barreled surname following the nuptials.

“I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life,” Peltz Beckham told his 16.3 million Instagram followers in a lengthy statement posted across six stories on the platform.

In his statement, Peltz Beckham referred to several instances that seemingly contributed to the rift, including allegations that his mother “hijacked” his first dance with his wife at their wedding.

He recalled how he had gone to the stage expecting to see his new wife.

“Instead my mum was waiting to dance with me,” Peltz Beckham wrote.

“My wife has been consistently disrespected by my family, no matter how hard we’ve tried to come together as one.”

In late January, the DJ who performed at the wedding, known as DJ Fat Tony (real name Tony Marnach), appeared to confirm some elements of Peltz Beckham’s account.

Marnach recalled how Peltz Beckham was “literally devastated” when Victoria went onto the stage.

“He thought he was going to do his first dance with his wife. Then Nicola leaves the room, crying her eyes out,” Marnach said.

“Brooklyn is stuck there on stage, and they do this dance, and Marc Anthony says ‘put your hands on your mother’s hips’ … and the whole situation was really awkward for everyone in the room,” added Marnach.

David and Victoria Beckham have not responded publicly to Peltz Beckham’s Instagram post.

US stocks rise, Asian markets get rocked as Middle East conflict intensifies

By John Towfighi, CNN

New York (CNN) — Oil prices Wednesday paused their recent surge, supporting a rebound in European and US stocks, as investors hold hope for limited long-term disruptions to energy markets and monitor developments in the Middle East.

Global investors are digesting the market turmoil spurred by the US war with Iran and subsequent conflict across the region. Asian stocks sank Wednesday, while European and US stocks steadied after two days of intense volatility.

South Korea and Japan rely on imports of liquified natural gas from the Middle East, leaving their economies and market particularly exposed to the ongoing turmoil.

South Korea’s benchmark Kospi index plunged 12%. The index had dropped 7.24% Tuesday, putting it on the precipice of a technical bear market.

Despite the plunge, the Kospi is still up nearly 21% this year. South Korea’s stock market was a top performer in 2025, surging 76% on enthusiasm about artificial intelligence and chipmakers.

“The fact that these countries are all almost entirely dependent on LNG for their supply of natural gas makes them especially vulnerable to the current halt in supply from the Middle East,” analysts at Capital Economics said in a note.

US and European stocks rebounded and oil prices moderated after the New York Times reported that Iran made indirect contact with the United States to discuss negotiations to end the conflict.

Separately, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday confirmed to CNBC that the United States Navy is set to provide “safe passage” through the Strait of Hormuz for oil tankers “when it is appropriate and should it be needed,” reinforcing comments made by President Donald Trump on Tuesday that helped oil prices moderate.

“There are still some real risks out there for investors…given that the stock market is pricing in the best-case scenario outcome right now,” Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak + Co, said in a note.

Diversifying and investing in Europe and Asia markets proved a popular theme across the past year, with international stocks outperforming the S&P 500. That theme has been tested this week as Asia in particular has borne the brunt of stock market pain. Japan’s Nikkei 225 is down roughly 8% this week and on pace for its worst week since March 2020.

Energy prices moderate after two-day surge

Oil prices steadied Wednesday, pausing a recent jump. US crude oil moved 0.3% lower, to $74.32 per barrel. Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, fell 0.2%, to $81.25 per barrel, hovering at its highest level since January 2025.

The relative calm in oil prices after two days of soaring higher helped ease some pain in the US stock market. The Dow gained 330 points, or 0.68%. The S&P 500 rose 0.86%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 1.4%.

The Dow and S&P are each down less than 0.5% this week and the Nasdaq is in the green despite the geopolitical uncertainty. A strong report Wednesday on the US service economy also helped boost stocks.

Gasoline prices jumped roughly 9 cents, to nearly $3.20 a gallon, according to AAA. Meanwhile, US gasoline futures edged higher, extending this week’s gains to nearly 9%.

US natural gas futures moved 4.2% lower, reversing course after rising 3.2% Tuesday. US diesel futures were flat but are up nearly 23% this week.

Europe natural gas and diesel prices fell 9% and 3%, respectively, calming after two days of sharp rises. Natural gas and diesel futures for the region are still up 55% and 30%, respectively, this week.

Apple announces its cheapest-ever new MacBook

Kraig Pakulski 0 29 Article rating: No rating

By Lisa Eadicicco, CNN

New York (CNN) — Apple on Wednesday launched the MacBook Neo, the company’s cheapest-ever new model.

The MacBook Neo is the first Apple laptop to run on a chip typically used in the iPhone and starts at $599. It signals a fresh attempt to court Windows and Chromebook customers and ramp up growth as an ongoing component shortages rattles the broader market.

John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, described the MacBook Neo as being “totally new” and built “from the ground up” during an event in New York on Wednesday.

The iPhone is Apple’s biggest moneymaker, followed by its services business and then its wearables division. But its Mac computers are critical for ensuring iPhone and Apple Watch users remain steeped within Apple’s ecosystem of products and services. Apple is straying from its typical playbook by appealing to cost-conscious consumers, a segment it has largely ceded to PC and Chromebook makers until now.

Expanding to new audiences could be critical as the industry grapples with an ongoing memory shortage that some analysts say will decimate the market for affordable laptops.

The MacBook Neo

Compared to Apple’s other MacBooks, the Neo has a smaller screen, less memory and is available in brighter color options, including a new “citrus” yellow.

But the major factor that separates it from Apple’s other MacBooks, aside from its lower price, is that it runs on Apple’s A18 Pro processor – a chip similar to the one that powers the iPhone 16 Pro. It’s the first time Apple has used one of its mobile chips to power a laptop.

Apple’s ability to run its Mac software on a phone chip demonstrates the advantage of having full control over its hardware and software, said Jitesh Ubrani, a research manager for the International Data Corporation. PC makers, on the other hand, typically design and make the laptops but use Microsoft’s Windows or Google’s Chrome OS software (Microsoft is a small player in the PC hardware business with its Surface laptops).

“They’re taking a chip that typically serves a lightweight (operating system) and running a more heavy weight (operating system),” he said. “And I think that speaks volumes about Apple’s ability to optimize.”

Apple is far from being the world’s biggest computer vendor; that title goes to Lenovo, which accounted for 27.2% of the market at the end of 2025 compared to Apple’s 9.4%, Gartner data indicates.

But Apple’s approach to the market has also been decidedly different from its PC rivals. MacBooks, until now, have largely been more expensive and lack a touchscreen option like most PCs.

The new MacBook Neo is an attempt to address at least one of those gaps. Although it doesn’t have a touchscreen, it could appeal to consumers who don’t want to spend more than $1,000 on a MacBook Air or Pro but need something more laptop-like than an iPad.

Ubrani said he expects the new MacBook to be popular among college students and young adults that may not have as much disposable income, while Gartner analyst Autumn Stanish says it could boost Apple’s presence in the classroom where Chromebooks are typically more prominent.

A tough time for the laptop industry

Growing demand for the type of memory that powers AI data centers has meant there’s fewer components for consumer products.

Gartner expects PC prices to increase by 17% in 2026, while the International Data Corporation estimate
