Zelensky pleads to Trump: ‘Stay on our side’

Kyiv (CNN) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a plea to Donald Trump on Monday, telling CNN he wants the US president “to stay on our side.”

Speaking at the Presidential Palace in Kyiv on the eve of the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Zelensky said the United States is far too big and too important to walk away from the conflict. And he hopes that Trump, during his State of the Union address Tuesday, will back Ukraine as it fights back against the Russia of President Vladimir Putin.

“They have to stay with … a democratic country which is fighting against one person. Because this person is a war. Putin is a war. It’s all about himself. It’s all about one person. And the country, all his country is in the prison,” Zelensky told CNN.

“If they really want to stop Putin, America’s so strong,” he said. Asked if he believes Trump is putting enough pressure on Putin, Zelensky said, “No.”

In a wide-ranging and — at times — emotional interview, Zelensky acknowledged that Ukrainians are exhausted by the conflict. But giving in to Putin’s demands is simply not an option, he said.

“We can’t just give him everything he wants. Because he wants to occupy us. If we will give him all he wants, we will lose everything — all of us, people will have to run away or be Russian.”

As the war enters its fifth year, trilateral peace talks involving Ukraine, Russia and the United States have not yet led to a breakthrough.

Zelensky told CNN that security guarantees, especially the issue of how Ukraine’s allies would react if Russia invaded Ukraine again in the future, remain a sticking point.

He said he keeps being told that Russia simply would not start another war. “This is not the answer to me. I’m sorry,” he said.

“We have good things in these security guarantees, it’s true,” he said of the promises currently on the table. “But I want (a) very specific answer: what (our) partners will be ready to do if Putin will come again. This is what Ukrainians want to hear,” he said.

There is also a disagreement about the sequence of steps toward peace, Zelensky said. Trump wants Zelensky to sign a peace agreement with Russia and a deal with the United States and European nations that gives Ukraine its security guarantees all in one go, ideally in a big ceremony marking the end of the war.

But Zelensky is adamant that security guarantees must be agreed and ratified by the US Congress first. He said this would give the Ukrainian people the confidence that they could rely on their allies in the future — because they have been let down too many times in the past.

Speaking about another thorny issue, Zelensky told CNN that Ukraine is willing to freeze the war at the current front lines. But he said the Ukrainian military would not withdraw from the areas of the eastern Donetsk region that are still under its control.

Russia is demanding that Ukraine relinquish the roughly 20% of the region that is still under Kyiv’s control, including the “fortress belt” of industrial cities, railways and roads that form the backbone of Ukraine’s defense and supply the front line.

“Russia wants (us) just to withdraw our army. … We can’t be such, sorry, foolish guys. We are not children. We went through this war, during all these years, and so we just, we can’t give them the country on (a) plate,” he said.

“For people who live there, it’s very important what security they will have … 200,000 people live there,” Zelensky said. “What do I have to say (to them) and what (do) our soldiers have to say — ‘Okay, bye, bye. We go away. You are R

House speaker tells GOP Rep. Gonzales to promptly address affair allegations

(CNN) — House Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday said he’s spoken with Rep. Tony Gonzales about the “very serious” allegations against him and told the Texas Republican to address the claims.

As the March 3 primary in the state draws nearer, allegations that Gonzales had an affair with a staffer who died by suicide last year have taken new hold. Gonzales has denied the affair and said he’s being blackmailed.

Johnson had endorsed Gonzales’ bid for reelection to his San Antonio-area seat. Gonzales faces Brandon Herrera, a YouTube personality who ran against him in 2024, in a tough GOP primary fight.

“I endorsed Tony before all these allegations came out. They’re obviously very serious, and I’ve spoken with him and told him he’s got to address that in an appropriate way with his constituents and all of that,” Johnson said Monday when asked if he still supported the congressman.

“So it’s too early for anybody to prejudge any of that, but we’ll see how it develops,” the Republican leader continued.

Attorney Bobby Barrera, who represents Adrian Aviles, said his client’s spouse – Gonzales district staffer Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, who died by self-immolation last year – had confessed that she had been having an affair with the congressman in June 2024.

Gonzales has repeatedly criticized what he called the “personal smears” against him, and has also accused Aviles of trying to blackmail him. Barrera has denied Gonzales’ claim, saying that the “assertion of extortion is ridiculous.”

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. (KEYT) - Cuesta College is planning to build a long-envisioned new campus in South San Luis Obispo County at the site of now-closed Arroyo Grande pharmacy.

"We are very excited that we have had the opportunity to acquire the former Rite Aid property at 1650 Grand Avenue in Arroyo Grande," said Dr. Jill Stearns, Cuesta College Superintendent/President. "It really appears to be not only a location, but a building that is going to very well align with the needs of Cuesta College as we design instruction for our South County."

The site of the property is at the southeast corner of Grand Avenue and Oak Park Boulevard, one of the busiest intersection located within the Five Cities.

The Rite Aid pharmacy closed last summer as part of the national chain's bankruptcy process, which forced the company to shut down all of its more 1,000 stores across the country.

"The building is a perfect shell with four solid walls and not a lot of structure inside of that," said Stearns. "It's really well suited for redesign. Our Board of Trustees has made it very clear that they want this South County campus to have the same standards that our North County campus and San Luis Obispo campuses have, so the building will not only be beautiful, it will also be loaded with technology and very forward thinking in the planning and design."

Cuesta College recently closed escrow on the property and now must go through an approval process with the City of Arroyo Grande before construction can begin.

"We are really looking forward to partnering with the city, and that ensuring that our overall design fits with their planning, and within what already exists," said Stearns. "We have already had our team in the space assessing, taking a look at what exists. We are now in the process of identifying a construction and project manager for that and then we will be identifying an architect. The next step in our process with the City of Arroyo Grande is providing a rendering of the external facade, so that we can take that for their review and consideration before any further planning."

Stearns is hopeful the new campus will be open for classes by January 2029.

"It's incredible excitement," said Stearns. "It is all about expanding opportunity, and in particular, opportunity that aligns with the needs and desires of our South County residents. We really want to bring to them the opportunity to access instruction, access services across the day and into the evening, so this is what we are excited to be able to bring to the South County."
