El incremento de la producción de petróleo de Venezuela este año representará “un 30-40 %” del aumento de la oferta global, según indicó este martes el secretario de Energía de Estados Unidos, Chris Wright.

Wright, que participó en un coloquio en el Instituto Francés de Relaciones Internacionales (IFRI) de París, calculó que si en la actualidad la producción de Venezuela es inferior a un millón de barriles diarios, el alza posible de aquí a que termine este año podría ser de “varios cientos de miles” de barriles adicionales.

El responsable estadounidense, que la semana pasada estuvo en Venezuela donde se entrevistó con la presidenta encargada, Delcy Rodríguez, insistió en que el interés de Washington allí “es geopolítico” y no simplemente por obtener un beneficio económico.

Aseguró que para el presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, se trata de tener un impacto en la situación del país gracias a la actividad económica.

Es decir, “utilizar el petróleo, el comercio, no los soldados estadounidenses ni los impuestos de los contribuyentes”.

Insistió en que, tras la operación militar estadounidense del 3 de enero pasado en la que fue capturado el hasta entonces presidente, Nicolás Maduro, y con el nuevo dispositivo por el que Estados Unidos controla el comercio del petróleo venezolano, el dinero vuelve a Venezuela y las cosas están cambiando allí.

Se refirió en particular a los “cientos” de presos políticos que han sido liberados -aunque recordó que quedan también otros cientos más detenidos-, y contrastó esa situación con la que se había vivido antes en Venezuela, de donde dijo que habían emigrado ocho millones de personas, de ellas seis millones a países todavía más pobres.

Wright se encuentra en París para participar a partir de mañana miércoles en la reunión ministerial de la Agencia Internacional de la Energía (AIE) que se va a prolongar hasta el jueves.

(CNN) — An 18-year-old who charged the US Capitol with a loaded shotgun while wearing a tactical vest was quickly arrested Tuesday, US Capitol Police said.

Law enforcement has not yet determined a motive for the would-be attack.

Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan said the man, armed with the loaded shotgun and carrying additional rounds, drove a white Mercedes SUV near the Capitol before exiting and running toward the building.

He was intercepted by Capitol Police, who drew their firearms and told him to drop his gun and get on the ground, Sullivan said. The man, who Sullivan did not name during the press conference, complied and laid down before being arrested and taken into custody.

“Who knows what could have happened if we didn’t have officers” at their posts, Sullivan said.

“This individual had a tactical vest on,” the chief said, as well as “tactical gloves.” A Kevlar helmet and gas mask were found in the man’s car, Sullivan said.

Law enforcement temporarily closed traffic and cautioned people to stay away from the area during the incident.

The Capitol was quieter than usual on Tuesday, with lawmakers away from Washington this week on a pre-scheduled recess.

USCP are working to determine where the man came from and said the vehicle was not registered in his name.

The man was acting alone and an investigation is ongoing, Capitol Police said. More information on the suspect is expected to be released later Tuesday.
