(CNN) — Savannah Guthrie was supposed to fly to Italy on Monday for NBC’s much-anticipated coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics.

But instead, Guthrie spent a heart-wrenching day in Tucson, Arizona, supporting a massive search for her 84-year-old mother, Nancy.

The elder Guthrie’s disappearance became national news on Monday as authorities described her home as a “crime scene” and asked the public for help finding her.

NBC mobilized its considerable resources to help one of the network’s biggest and best-loved stars. Guthrie’s co-hosts on the “Today” show shared the Pima County Sheriff’s Department’s tip line phone number, 520-351-4900, all across television and social media.

This story “hits too close to home for our newsroom,” anchor Tom Llamas said Monday night, leading “NBC Nightly News” with the missing person case.

“The sheriff there tells me she was taken against her will from her bed in the middle of the night,” Llamas reported. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Savannah and her family right now.”

Guthrie, a 19-year veteran of NBC, joined the “Today” show cast in 2011 and was promoted to one of the main co-host chairs just one year later.

Over the years she has added other roles, including co-hosting NBC’s coverage of the Olympics opening ceremonies, which she was scheduled to host again this Friday at the San Siro Stadium in Milan, alongside sports commentator Terry Gannon.

Guthrie was also slated to anchor NBC’s first night of prime time Olympics coverage because the usual anchor, Mike Tirico, will be in California for the Super Bowl.

‘The worst phone call of her life…’

With that big international trip coming up, Guthrie spent much of last weekend with her husband and two kids.

But her plans were shattered when a family member called her and said Nancy was missing.

It was “the worst phone call of her life,” said an NBC producer who knows Savannah personally.

Authorities in Pima County, Arizona, said Nancy’s family members searched her home in vain before calling 911 to report her missing around noon local time on Sunday.

A source familiar with the matter said Savannah immediately scrambled to fly to Tucson.

On Monday morning, Pima County sheriff Chris Nanos said Savannah had been in touch with his office, and “she has a security team that’s been in touch with us throughout the night.”

The NBC host called herself a “daughter of the desert” in a “Today” show segment about her Tucson roots last fall.

In the segment, Savannah and Nancy dined together at a local restaurant — one of many times the host featured her mom on the morning show.

Nancy called Tucson “wonderful” during the segment: “Just the air, the quality of life is laid back and gentle.”

“I like to watch the javelinas eat my plants,” she added with a laugh, referring to pig-looking animals that are often seen in the area.

Savannah’s family history is well known to “Today” show fans. Nancy and her husband Charles lived in Australia, where Charles worked as a mining engineer, when Savannah was born in 1971.

The family relocated to Arizona when Savannah was young. Charles died of a heart attack when she was starting senior year of high school.

Sin embargo, a partir del 2 de febrero, hacer cualquiera de esos deseos tiene un precio. Ahora los visitantes deben comprar un boleto de 2 euros (un poco más de US$ 2) para acercarse a la fuente y lanzar monedas a sus aguas.

El presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, dijo a los periodistas el lunes que está en conversaciones con líderes cubanos, al mismo tiempo que calificó al país como una “nación fallida”.

“No están recibiendo dinero de Venezuela, y no están recibiendo dinero de ningún lado”, dijo Trump. También afirmó que México dejará de enviar petróleo a Cuba, un día después de que amenazara con imponer aranceles a cualquier país que venda petróleo al Gobierno de la isla.

Haciendo referencia a los exiliados cubanos, Trump dijo que muchos “querrían regresar” o “al menos visitar a familiares”.

“Creo que estamos bastante cerca, estamos tratando ahora mismo con los líderes cubanos”, añadió.

El viceministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Cuba, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, confirmó que Cuba está en conversaciones con EE.UU., aunque dijo que los intercambios aún no se han convertido en un “diálogo” formal.

“Hemos tenido intercambio de mensajes, tenemos embajadas, hemos tenido comunicaciones, pero no podemos decir que hemos tenido una mesa de diálogo”, dijo Cossío en una entrevista en la sede de la Cancillería en La Habana con la agencia de noticias Reuters. Kyiv (CNN) — Russia attacked Ukraine’s capital Kyiv with ballistic missiles early on Tuesday, local authorities reported, following a pause in strikes on major cities and infrastructure agreed to by Russia and the US as Ukraine grapples with plummeting winter temperatures.

CNN staff in Kyiv reported hearing several strong explosions in the city.

Russian President Vladimir Putin last week agreed to pause attacking major Ukrainian cities and infrastructure until Sunday, following a “personal request” from US President Donald Trump, according to the Kremlin.

The pause also came following trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine and the US in Abu Dhabi, the first such talks since Moscow’s invasion in February 2022.

Several multi-storey residential buildings had been damaged, according to reports, Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the Kyiv’ military administration, wrote on Telegram.

Dnipro, in eastern Ukraine, was also being attacked by ballistic missiles, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.

While there have been no reported strikes on energy facilities or major cities since last Thursday, according to Ukrainian authorities, Russia has continued to strike logistics routes and transport infrastructure, with deadly results.

The Kremlin has confirmed that the next round of trilateral talks between Ukraine, Russia and the United States aimed at ending the war in Ukraine will take place on Wednesday and Thursday in Abu Dhabi.

“In the freezing cold, Russians decided to launch another massive strike on Kyiv,” Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the Kyiv’ military administration, wrote on Telegram following the strikes early Tuesday.

‘Survival mode’

Russia has stepped up attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leaving swathes of the country facing power shortages and outages in the depths of winter. On early Tuesday morning local time, the temperature on Kyiv was -20 Celsius ( – 4 Fahrenheit).

Ukraine’s biggest private energy company is in “survival mode,” its CEO told CNN, with the next few weeks critical as the country grapples with plummeting temperature and the “worst condition of our energy system in modern history.”

DTEK currently operates five thermal power plants in Ukraine, of which two are currently offline and the other three are functioning at low capacity, Maxim Timchenko told CNN Monday in an interview from Dnipro.

He said the company was working to repair the damage from repeated Russian attacks, but it’s often not possible in freezing weather conditions.

His biggest hope right now is that the energy ceasefire announced last week, which he says brought a five-day reprieve in attacks on DTEK’s thermal power plants, is extended in talks in Abu Dhabi this week.
