SAN FRANCISCO (KSBW) — Officials from San Francisco Animal Control and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife tranquilized a mountain lion Tuesday that was seen roaming around the city.

Residents in the city’s Pacific Heights neighborhood first spotted the animal dubbed 157M Monday afternoon around Lafayette Park.

Officials were able to corner the animal in a grassy area between two apartment complexes. They shot three darts to tranquilize the animal and later transported it out of the area for treatment.

“What I’ve been told by the Department of Fish and Wildlife is this is normal for a male to leave his mother and go claim his own territory,” said Mariano Elias, with the San Francisco Fire Department. “Unfortunately, sometimes it does happen in and around city life, and that is where we are today.”

The animal had already been tagged by a group called the Puma Project. They determined the male mountain lion to be around 2 years old, and they tagged him all the way down in Saratoga.

“We had a biologist who was in charge of the whole operation, so it worked out well seamlessly,” Elias said. “Clogged a little bit of traffic at one point, but in the end it was for everyone’s safety.”

Officials later said they released the animal back into the wild in the Santa Cruz mountains where he was born, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Wildlife officials said he was in great health.

Brendan Banfield testifies he shot his wife’s attacker trying to save her life

By Lauren del Valle, CNN

(CNN) — A Virginia man on trial for allegedly killing his wife and another man told a jury how he found his wife being attacked in their bedroom and shot the man who was stabbing her.

Prosecutors say Brendan Banfield concocted an elaborate scheme to kill his wife, Christine Banfield, and another man, Joseph Ryan, in their family home in February 2023. He faces life in prison if convicted on aggravated murder charges.

Banfield started testifying Wednesday afternoon about his version of events. He’s maintained his innocence, and his lawyer has accused prosecutors and investigators of manipulating evidence to suit their theory against his client.

Prosecutors put on a case over four days of testimony, telling the jury Banfield plotted with his family’s au pair to pose as his wife on a fetish website and lure Ryan to their home under the guise of having a consensual violent sexual encounter. Banfield was having an extramarital affair with the au pair at the time.

The plan, according to prosecutors, was to frame Ryan for Christine Banfield’s death and make Ryan’s killing appear to be an act of self-defense.

Banfield acknowledged his affair with Juliana Peres Magalhães that started in August 2022, but testified that he never had a plan with the au pair to get rid of his wife.

He said he made clear to Peres Magalhães that he’d had affairs in the past, and this was just another affair and that it would not change his relationship with his wife.

Banfield said that he loved his wife and they’d made a decision to stay married despite both having affairs at times during their nearly 20-year relationship.

On Thursday, Banfield also testified that he and Peres Magalhães had broken up at different times in their affair and were not actively in a relationship the day of the killings.

The morning of the killings, Banfield had an important work meeting scheduled that he testified could’ve led to a promotion. His wife, who was sitting in bed using her laptop, wished him luck before he left the house, Banfield testified Wednesday. He also said he had planned to drive to New York with his daughter to celebrate his birthday later that day.

“There was no plan with Juliana on February 24,” he said. “As far as I knew, Juliana was going to be going to the zoo” with the Banfields’ then 4-year-old daughter.

Banfield said he only learned his wife took off from work the night before. “Christine had just taken off from work, and I understood that she was going to be home,” Banfield testified. “But there was no – I didn’t know anything else at that point. I was more concerned with my day … what I had to do at my job.”

That morning, Banfield stopped at a nearby McDonald’s for breakfast after leaving the house. Earlier at trial the jury saw restaurant surveillance footage that corroborates that testimony.

Peres Magalhães called him very stressed while he was using the restroom at the fast food restaurant, Banfield testified.

He told Peres Magalhães he’d call Christine, but that call to his wife went straight to voicemail. He then called the au pair again. Banfield testified he told Peres Magalhães he’d come home and she should not go into the house alone.

On Thursday, Banfield testified he told the au pair to stay with his daughter outside while he went to investigate the house. He thought he could be walking in on his wife having an affair so he used the basement door in his backyard to avoid being heard at the front door, Banfield said.

“I believed that it was an affair that was going on at that point…doesn’t seem like an emergency for the police to be involved in,” he said.

Man arrested on charges of impersonating an FBI agent in alleged attempt to free Luigi Mangione from jail

Luigi Mangione appears for a suppression of evidence hearing in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan Criminal Court on December 9 in New York City.

By Kara Scannell, CNN

(CNN) — A Minnesota man was arrested and charged with impersonating an FBI agent after he tried to enter a federal jail and release suspected murderer Luigi Mangione, according to law enforcement sources.

Mark Anderson, 36, arrived at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, on Wednesday evening claiming he was an FBI agent with a court order for Mangione’s release, according to a criminal complaint filed Thursday and a law enforcement source.

When officials with the Bureau of Prisons asked the man for his credentials, according to the complaint, the man provided a Minnesota driver’s license. He also allegedly stated that he had weapons in his bag.

Anderson then allegedly threw paperwork at the BOP officers. The papers appeared to be related to legal claims against the Justice Department, according to the FBI agent who signed the complaint.

Prison officials searched Anderson’s backpack, according to the complaint, and found a barbecue-style fork and a circular steel blade.

Anderson traveled to New York for a potential job that didn’t work out and had been working at a pizzeria before his arrest, the law enforcement source told CNN. It isn’t clear what connection, if any, he has to Mangione.

CNN has reached out to Mangione’s attorney.

Anderson, who is charged with one count of falsely pretending to be an officer of the US government, is expected to appear in federal court in Brooklyn Thursday afternoon.

Mangione has been held at the federal jail since his arrest in December 2024 for the suspected murder of UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson.

He is facing federal and state murder charges and has pleaded not guilty.

The judge overseeing his federal trial last week said jury selection in that case will begin September 8, with opening statements commencing in October if she rules the Justice Department cannot pursue the death penalty, or in January 2027 if the capital charge remains. A ruling is expected by Friday.

On Wednesday, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, which first filed murder charges, asked the judge overseeing the state case to order its trial for July — two months before the federal case.

Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann said the murder took place in Manhattan, the investigation was led by his office and the New York Police Department, and the state indictment was returned before a federal complaint was filed.

“The State has an overriding interest in trying this defendant for the cold-blooded execution of Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024. It resulted in the tragic death of a guest to our city on our streets,” he wrote. “Federal law supports our request that we proceed first and our right to a speedy resolution of this case would be severely compromised should the federal trial proceed first.”

In a statement, Mangione’s lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, said they will need time to prepare for the federal trial.
