Una nueva amenaza invernal se cierne sobre amplias zonas de Estados Unidos. Los meteorólogos alertan por la posible formación de una bomba ciclónica frente a la costa este este fin de semana, un sistema que podría intensificarse con rapidez y dejar fuertes nevadas, vientos peligrosos e inundaciones costeras desde las Carolinas hasta el noreste del país, mientras millones de personas aún se recuperan del último temporal de frío extremo.

Se espera que una tormenta que se fortalezca rápidamente se desarrolle frente a la costa sureste este fin de semana en medio de un brote de frío intenso, solo días después de que un histórico sistema invernal azotara gran parte de la costa este.

La proximidad de la tormenta a la costa a medida que avanza hacia el norte durante el fin de semana determinará la cantidad de nieve, si la hubiera, que caiga en el Atlántico Medio y el Noreste.

La confianza en el pronóstico es mayor en partes del sudeste, incluidas las Carolinas y el sur de Virginia, donde la acumulación de nieve y los fuertes vientos probablemente comenzarán el sábado.

Los modelos coinciden en que la tormenta se acercará lo suficiente como para traer nieve a esta región, incluso con cambios leves en su trayectoria.

Si bien aún se están refinando los totales exactos de nevadas, la señal de acumulación es lo suficientemente fuerte como para generar preocupación por posibles viajes peligrosos, especialmente con el aire frío ya firmemente establecido.

(CNN) — With widespread layoffs expected at The Washington Post in the coming weeks, teams of reporters are sending impassioned letters to owner Jeff Bezos, urging him not to shrink the newsroom.

In a letter obtained by CNN, the newspaper’s White House reporters banded together to defend some of the desks facing major cutbacks.

“If the plan, to the extent there is one, is to reorient around politics we wanted to emphasize how much we rely on collaboration with foreign, sports, local — the entire paper, really. And if other sections are diminished, we all are,” bureau chief Matt Viser wrote in one of the Post’s internal Slack channels on Thursday morning.

The accompanying letter, signed by Viser and all seven other White House reporters, makes the case for a “diversified Washington Post.” And it tries to speak Bezos’s language, appealing to him with data and a determination to grow the Post.

“In a typical month,” the letter said, “some of us have found that more than half of the new subscribers we brought to The Post came from stories and scoops that relied on desks such as International and Metro.”

Those stories included recent scoops about the US military action in Venezuela and President Donald Trump’s demolition of the East Wing.

“Our colleagues’ work helps lift up our own,” the reporters wrote.

A spokesperson for The Post declined comment to CNN about the looming layoffs.

The incoming cuts…

The unusual public pleas to Bezos have come after several private signals about imminent cuts, including an internal memo saying the Post no longer planned to send any reporters to the Winter Olympics in February.

Reporters fear that the Post is slashing its way to irrelevance; moreover, they wonder whether Bezos, who bought the publication more than a decade ago, cares about it anymore.

Thus, the staffers are going over the head of the Post’s publisher, Will Lewis, and trying to get Bezos’s attention directly.

International correspondents, anticipating reductions to their ranks, wrote to Bezos last weekend and said “robust, powerful foreign coverage is essential to the Washington Post’s brand and its future success in whatever form the paper takes moving forward.”

A second letter, from more than two dozen DC-area beat reporters, emphasized the importance of local coverage. “Should you allow Post management to lay off the local staff, which has been cut in half in the last five years, the effect on this region and the people in it will be immeasurable,” the reporters wrote.

The new letter from the White House reporters is a bit different because there is no indication that their jobs are at risk.

Instead, Lewis has spoken privately about focusing the Post’s investment on politics and a few other key areas, while cutting back in areas like sports and foreign affairs.

“But some of our most impactful, most-read articles… have relied on collaboration with all corners of the newsroom,” the White House reporters told Bezos.

After several tumultuous years and previous rounds of staff reductions, reporters who have stayed at the Post, even when offered buyout opportunities to leave, say the staff is at a breaking point.

“There’s now a strong sense that neither Jeff Bezos nor Will Lewis are serious, good-faith stewards of The Washington Post,” one veteran correspondent said.

(CNN) — President Donald Trump did it after the 2021 attack on the US Capitol. He did it after the 2022 attack on the husband of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He did it after the murder last month of filmmaker and Democratic activist Rob Reiner. And he did it again on Tuesday after an attack on another Democrat, Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.

After cases of violence targeted at his political opponents, Trump has shown a penchant to respond with conspiracy theories baselessly suggesting the targets of that violence are at fault. When he was asked by an ABC News reporter on Tuesday night whether he had seen the video of Omar being sprayed with a substance by a man at her town hall event, Trump responded, “No. I don’t think about her. I think she’s a fraud. I really don’t think about that. She probably had herself sprayed, knowing her.”

Such false-flag conspiracy theories were already spreading Tuesday night in pro-Trump circles on social media. As usual, there was no apparent basis for them.

The man who was arrested, Anthony Kazmierczak, had previously shared anti-Omar content and photos of Trump on social media. He texted his neighbor that he might get arrested at Omar’s town hall, then rushed the podium and sprayed her with a substance police believe was apple cider vinegar. Kazmierczak was arrested by Minneapolis police in connection with alleged third-degree assault, and a federal law enforcement official told CNN’s Holmes Lybrand on Wednesday that US Capitol Police were pursuing potential federal charges.

The Capitol Police said in a Wednesday statement: “A man is in custody after he decided to assault a Member of Congress – an unacceptable decision that will be met with swift justice. We are grateful for the rapid response from onsite security and our local law enforcement partners. We are now working with our federal partners to see this man faces the most serious charges possible to deter this kind of violence in our society.”

In the past, Trump has been undeterred by official confirmation that his conspiratorial accusations were inaccurate. His comments are part of a long series of unsympathetic responses to incidents affecting people not aligned with him politically.

New York (CNN) — Starbucks has an advantage in the mornings with coffee. Now, it wants to lure people back later in the day with a different type of caffeine boost.

The coffee chain’s US locations will roll out a new afternoon menu in the coming weeks, which will include new snacks and a variety of drinks different from its core coffee selections, including teas, revamped energy drinks and matcha.

“If you think about the morning, it’s very routinized, but the afternoon can be a bit more spontaneous,” Tressie Lieberman, Starbucks’ global chief brand officer, told CNN. “You want a different drink based off how your day is going or what the weather feels like.”

That creates an opportunity for Starbucks, she said.

Starbucks has been losing some of its competitive edge to upstarts like Dutch Bros. and Black Rock Coffee. Afternoons are typically a slower time for the chain, said Robert Byrne, senior director of consumer research for Technomic, so there’s potential for growth.

“This is the little miniature break, the brain reset, or the emotional reset that a lot of consumers can get from that quick little afternoon trip to their favorite beverage spot and I think there’s a ton of opportunity there,” he told CNN.

Expanding Starbucks’ afternoon selection has been a key initiative for CEO Brian Niccol’s revival plans. After a slow start, his menu changes and other improvements seem to be working: The Seattle-based company reported Wednesday its first rise in US same-stores sales and traffic in about two years.

A crucial part of the afternoon menu is Starbucks’ new energy drinks, which smaller competitors already offer. The chain previously tried to enter the popular space, but discontinued the effort about a year ago when it slimmed down its menu.

The new version is based on its popular Refreshers drinks brand, and will derive its caffeine from green coffee extract, or unroasted coffee beans. Lieberman said that helps Starbucks stand apart since many energy drinks are made with a lot of synthetic ingredients.

The “health-minded consumer segment” is rapidly growing and now accounts for roughly 40% of all food and beverage sales, Circana, an industry research firm, reported this week. In particular, energy drinks are now a $25 billion market.

Other drink additions appealing to health-conscious customers include a new chai latte that lets customers customize the sweetness level and global flavors like ube and lavender. New matcha beverages are coming next week, too.

Starbucks’ food selection is also getting a makeover, with more savory items packed with protein and fiber, which are two popular wellness trends, and additional on-the-go options for afternoons. After all, food is nearly a $6 billion business for the brand, which has focused heavily on breakfast, Lieberman said.

“We’re looking at adding more handheld options like a pizza or a flatbread that would be portable and use super simple, clean ingredients,” she said.
