The world has a new EV king. It’s not Tesla

(CNN) — In 2011, Tesla CEO Elon Musk dismissed Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD as a competitor. But some 14 years later, BYD beat the American EV pioneer at its own game.

The Chinese car giant has overtaken Tesla as the world’s largest seller of EVs, according to 2025 data released by the two rivals this week.

BYD announced Thursday that it had sold 2.26 million EVs, up nearly 28% from 2024. Meanwhile, Tesla reported Friday a second straight year of declining sales: Deliveries fell 8.6% to only 1.6 million, recording the biggest annual drop in the company’s history.

BYD was able to overtake Tesla even though its EVs are not available for purchase in America, while China is Tesla’s second-largest market.

In the fourth quarter, Tesla’s sales came in at about 418,000, down 15.6% from a year earlier and an even sharper decline from record global sales in the third quarter, when American motorists were rushing to buy EVs before a $7,500 tax credit expired on October 1.

Unlike other automakers, Tesla does not report its sales by market, providing only global figures, but the US market is responsible for nearly half its revenue, according to company reports. Reports by other automakers Monday are also likely to show weak US EV sales in the final three months of 2025.

Tesla’s deliveries had grown nearly 50% a year at one point. But it reported its first drop in annual sales in 2024, posting a modest 1% decline. Its sales fell sharply in the first six months of 2025 as it faced more competition from the EV offerings of other automakers, such a BYD and legacy global automakers, as well as backlash against Musk’s political activities, which angered many potential American and European buyers.

Early in the year, when Musk was leading the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, there were regular protests outside Tesla showrooms in Europe and the United States, and some reports of vandalism against Tesla cars and sites.

The rush to take advantage of the soon-to-expire tax credit helped sales in the third quarter. But it likely brought forward purchases by some buyers who might have bought Teslas later in the year.

To try to counter the loss of the tax credit, Tesla rolled out cheaper versions of its Model 3 and Model Y cars, but those versions, while costing about $5,000 less than their “premium” equivalents, also won’t travel as far on a full charge as the premium versions and lack some features.

Aggressive competition

BYD achieved the latest milestone while grappling with fierce competition and relentless price wars in its home market. The intense squeeze in China has prompted the Shenzhen-based company to expa

(CNN) — A respected dentist and his wife were gunned down in their upscale Ohio home while two young children were inside, authorities said, as the killer remains on the loose.

The bodies of Spencer Tepe, 37, and his wife, Monique Tepe, 39, were found Tuesday after a welfare check at their home in the 1400 block of N. 4th Street, Columbus police said.

“Two small children were also found in the residence unharmed,” police said.

Officers found no obvious signs of forced entry, and no firearm was found at the scene, CNN affiliate WSYX reported. Detectives are investigating the deaths as a double homicide.

Spencer Tepe worked at Athens Dental Depot. The owner of the practice, Dr. Mark Valrose, called 911 on Tuesday morning when Tepe uncharacteristically missed work.

“He is always on time and he would contact us if there was any issues,” Valrose told dispatchers. “I don’t know how else to say this, but we are very, very concerned. This is very out of character for him. We can’t get in touch with his wife, which is probably the more concerning thing.”

An officer responded at 9:22 a.m., but did not get an answer, WSYX reported, citing police records.

Colleagues also drove to the Tepes’ home, and one friend heard children crying inside. But no one answered the door.

The friend called police around 9:56 a.m.

“I can hear kids inside, and I think I heard one yell,” the caller said, according to dispatch audio. “But we can’t get in.”

Around 10:03 a.m., an audibly distressed man called 911.

“There’s a body,” he said.

Police have not released any details about a possible suspect or motive and are asking the public for any information on the case.

Athens Dental Depot announced its closure for the rest of this week.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden passing of our dear colleague and friend, Dr. Spencer Tepe, as well as his wife Monique,” the office posted Thursday on Facebook.

“He will be deeply missed by our team and the many patients he cared for over the years. Our thoughts and sincerest condolences are with their families and loved ones during this very difficult time.”

Tracking three storms into the first week of 2026

Kraig Pakulski 0 45 Article rating: No rating

Happy Friday! Storm system number two drops down into the area and rain begins Friday night. Some isolated and small showers may pop up in the morning, and morning temperatures will be chilly. As the cold front moves over California, expect clouds to increase and highs in the 50s and 60s. Winds are strong with this system and a Wind Advisory is in effect for most inland areas of the Central Coast through Saturday evening. Beaches will likely see wind gusts near 30mph. High Surf is expected and all coasts remain under a Beach Hazard Statement thorough the weekend.

Heavy rain begins Saturday morning with isolated rainfall rates nearing half an inch or greater per hour. These heighten mudslide and debris flow concerns around recent burn scars. Winds hold strong through most of the afternoon. Use caution when headed out. It is likely that more Flash Flooding concerns will arise with this portion of the system. Roadways will be slick and the ground is well over saturated. We begin to dry out by Saturday night before more rain arrives.

Heavy rain begins early Sunday with fast moving cells developing and dropping more impressive rainfall. We will add another inch or two with this next round of rain. More flash flooding concerns arise as heaviest showers move through close to lunch. Avoid beaches as waves and winds make for hazardous marine conditions. We hold with rain chances through the middle of next week. Temperatures stay well below average into the 50s and 60s.
