(CNN) — Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel warned Monday that a US military assault on Cuba “will cause a bloodbath with incalculable consequences” amid renewed tension between Havana and Washington.

“Cuba poses no threat, nor does it have aggressive plans or intentions against any country. It has none against the US, nor has it ever had any, something the government of that nation knows well,” the leader said in a post on X.

Díaz-Canel added that Cuba “is already suffering a multidimensional aggression from the US” and that it “has the absolute and legitimate right to defend itself against a military assault,” though he maintained that this “cannot logically or honestly be used as an excuse to impose a war against the noble Cuban people.”

Bilateral relations are at one of their lowest points in decades, with renewed pressure from US President Donald Trump and a spiraling energy crisis on the communist-run island. Last week, Cuba’s energy minister said that a last-minute Russian oil donation had been exhausted, and that Cubans would have to endure more power cuts.

In recent months, Trump has often predicted the end of the Castro regime in remarks to the press.

“I think they’re going to have to come to us,” Trump told Fox News in an interview aired on Friday. “It’s a failed nation. It’s a totally failed nation.”

Beyond the longstanding economic embargo and an oil blockade that has pushed the island’s energy crisis to its limits, the United States is preparing an indictment against former President Raúl Castro, according to sources. The indictment would mark a significant escalation in the US stance against the Cuban government.

On Friday, Trump declined to comment on the possible case against Castro, saying that he will let the Justice Department “comment on it, but they (Cubans) need help, as you know.”

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said on Monday on X that Cuba “has the right to legitimate self-defense against any external aggression.”

“Those who seek to illegitimately attack Cuba resort to any pretext, no matter how deceitful and ridiculous, to justify an attack that runs contrary to US and world public opinion,” the official wrote.

The day before, Rodríguez wrote that the Trump administration “builds, day after day, a fraudulent case to justify the ruthless economic war against the Cuban people and eventual military aggression.”

The Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) John Ratcliffe traveled to Havana last week for a rare meeting with officials from the Ministry of the Interior and heads of the island’s intelligence services.

La presidenta de México, Claudia Sheinbaum, dijo este lunes que “no hay ningún riesgo” en que los 10 funcionarios y exfuncionarios recientemente acusados por Estados Unidos de delitos de narcotráfico se entreguen en ese país.

Sheinbaum señaló esto durante su conferencia de prensa diaria, luego de que se le preguntara si ve riesgos por lo que puedan declarar en Estados Unidos los funcionarios y exfuncionarios del estado de Sinaloa a los que Estados Unidos acusa de traficar drogas y aliarse con el Cartel de Sinaloa, una de las organizaciones criminales más grandes del continente.

“Ningún riesgo, ninguno, fue una decisión de ellos entregarse y no hay ningún riesgo, ninguno”, respondió la mandataria.

CNN reportó el viernes que Gerardo Mérida Sánchez, exsecretario de Seguridad de Sinaloa y quien está entre las 10 personas acusadas por Estados Unidos, quedó detenido por autoridades de ese país. Mérida Sánchez ingresó a Estados Unidos por Arizona y fue trasladado a Nueva York, donde el 1 de junio tendrá su siguiente audiencia judicial.

Algunos medios de comunicación mexicanos han reportado que otros de los funcionarios y exfuncionarios acusados se han entregado o buscan entregarse. CNN no ha podido confirmar estos casos.

El funcionario de más alto rango acusado por Estados Unidos es el gobernador de Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha, a quien el Departamento de Justicia acusa de narcotráfico y de brindar apoyo a Los Chapitos, una fracción del Cartel de Sinaloa, a cambio de que le ayudaran a ganar las elecciones estatales de 2021. Rocha rechaza las acusaciones y pidió licencia para separarse temporalmente del cargo con el argumento de que con ello facilitará las investigaciones en su contra y, según dijo, que se aclare su situación.

Sheinbaum insistió este lunes en que Estados Unidos debe presentar pruebas de sus señalamientos y, si las hay, las autoridades mexicanas actuarán como corresponda.

“Si hay pruebas, que la Fiscalía actúe. Nosotros no tenemos nada, absolutamente nada que esconder, y no hacemos ningún pacto de ningún tipo ni con criminales, ni de cuello blanco ni criminales comunes ni criminales de la delincuencia organizada”, dijo.

Las acusaciones de Estados Unidos contra los funcionarios y exfuncionarios de Sinaloa han tensado la relación del Gobierno de Sheinbaum con Estados Unidos. El presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, dice que México no hace lo suficiente para combatir al narcotráfico, algo que Sheinbaum rechaza. Este lunes, la mandataria señaló que, si Estados Unidos quiere ayudar a México en materia de seguridad, debe frenar el consumo de drogas en su territorio y el tráfico de armas que llegan a México.

“¿Cuál es la mejor manera que Estados Unidos tiene para apoyar a México, cuál es la mejor manera? Disminuyendo el consumo, evitando que entren armas a México, es la mejor manera que Estados Unidos tiene, y combatiendo a los carteles que operan en Estados Unidos”, dijo.
