El presidente Donald Trump ha gobernado durante todo su segundo mandato como un hombre que ejerce un poder sin restricciones. Eso suele provocarle frustraciones más adelante, cuando ese enfoque choca de frente con la realidad.

Su desliz de esta semana, cuando dijo que no tomó en cuenta las finanzas de los estadounidenses mientras intentaba resolver la guerra con Irán, resume el problema.

Cuando se le preguntó el martes cuánto influían las preocupaciones económicas de los estadounidenses en su impulso por alcanzar un acuerdo de paz, Trump respondió: “En absoluto”.

“Lo único que importa cuando hablo de Irán [es] que no puede tener un arma nuclear”, dijo Trump. “No pienso en la situación financiera de los estadounidenses. No pienso en nadie. Pienso en una sola cosa: no podemos permitir que Irán tenga un arma nuclear. Eso es todo”.

Trump no es ajeno a comentarios despectivos sobre la situación económica de los estadounidenses comunes. Pero esto sugirió que simplemente no le importaba, como si ni siquiera estuviera en su radar.

Eso corre el riesgo de sonar particularmente insensible, dado lo malos que son los números del presidente sobre la economía y cuánto perciben ya los estadounidenses que está descuidando ese tema.

Como era de esperarse, los republicanos rápidamente intentaron restar importancia a los comentarios de Trump.

Mientras el senador saliente Thom Tillis, de Carolina del Norte, dijo a CNN que los comentarios de Trump eran “preocupantes”, otros han tratado de minimizarlos.

El senador John Cornyn, de Texas, aseguró a CNN que fue “solo una especie de comentario al pasar”. La senadora Cynthia Lummis, de Wyoming, se negó a comentar a un reportero de MeidasTouch, “principalmente porque creo que en realidad sí le importa”.

Otros, como el presidente de la Cámara de Representantes, Mike Johnson, y el representante Troy Nehls, de Texas, recurrieron a la idea de que el “contexto” del comentario de Trump quizá no fuera tan malo. Nehls también animó a la gente a “relajarse”.

Y luego estaba el vicepresidente J. D. Vance. Afirmó el miércoles que los comentarios de Trump habían sido tergiversados. Pero también adoptó un tono mucho más conciliador y empático sobre la economía que el que tuvo Trump.

Dijo dos veces que el Gobierno se preocupa por las finanzas de los estadounidenses. Insistió tres veces en que estaba enfocado en el tema. También reconoció que “tenemos mucho trabajo por hacer” para ofrecer prosperidad y admitió que “el dato de inflación del mes pasado no fue bueno”.

Fue el tipo de respuesta matizada que muchos en la operación política de Trump probablemente desearían que el propio presidente hubiera dado.

Pero, por supuesto, este es Trump.

Hay una explicación plausible para su desdén hacia los efectos financieros de la guerra: que simplemente le gustaría fingir que no existen.

Los efectos económicos son, después de todo, la principal limitación para mantener su posición a la espera de un acuerdo de paz con Irán que cumpla todas sus exigencias. (CNN) — They say three things are certain in life. Scottie Scheffler being among the frontrunners at a major championship is definitely one of them.

With favorites falling to the wayside all over the undulating greens at Aronimink Golf Club, the ever-unflappable Scheffler sits atop the leaderboard after the opening day’s golf in Philadelphia.

Scheffler is joined at the top of the pile by six other players on 3-under-par, who will all look to do their best to stay close to the World No. 1 over the next few days.

Scheffler helps set the pace

Sport, particularly golf, is loved for its unexpected nature. But these rules don’t apply to Scheffler.

There is now an air of inevitability whenever the four-time major champion walks to the first tee box at one of golf’s premier events. And today was no different.

The 29-year-old was the big favorite coming into the second major of the year and all the talk seemed to be about who could keep up with the reigning champ.

But these expectations seem to weigh very little upon the shoulders of Scheffler as he ticked off another brilliant day of golf.

An opening round of 67, featuring five birdies, has put Scheffler in a great spot to retain his title.

“Definitely the best start I’ve gotten off to this year, maybe besides American Express maybe,” Scheffler said after the round.

“Yeah, I felt like, especially going into the weekend, when you look at like the Masters and Hilton Head and Cadillac, finishing second was probably not all that bad from where I was starting the weekend. Yeah, definitely nice to get off to a better start this week.”

The greatest compliment you can give to Scheffler is that he makes a sport so fraught with danger seem somewhat sedate at times.

But Scheffler isn’t alone shooting three-under.

Aldrich Potgieter, Stephan Jaeger, Min Woo Lee, Ryo Hisatsune, Martin Kaymer and Alex Smalley all share the first-round lead.

With it looking like it will only get more challenging out there, Friday could see a lot of movement among the frontrunners.

McIlroy’s day of mishaps

But while a whole host of players made moves towards the leading pack, Rory McIlroy struggled throughout his opening round.

Just over a month from winning his second consecutive Masters title, McIlroy came into the PGA Championship as one of the favorites – and rightly so.

What materialized on the course at Aronimink Golf Club, however, was far from the form of a contender.

The six-time major champion was miles from his best and shot an opening round of 74, leaving himself on 4-over-par and seven shots behind the leaders.

When asked to sum up his round, McIlroy’s answer was simple.

“Sh*t,” the Northern Irishman said of his opening 18 holes.

McIlroy said the root of his problems came from repeatedly not finding fairways.

The rough at Aronimink is unforgiving at its best and McIlroy found this out firsthand on the first hole of his day.

The two-time PGA Championship winner missed his target by mere inches and had to punch out from the damp, long first cut.

It didn’t get any better for McIlroy from there and the World No. 2 will now have his work cut out to make the cut heading into the weekend.

Time is of the essence

Conditions at Aronimink seem to be difficult enough already.

They then become even harder when you have to factor in a two-stroke penalty for poor timekeeping.

And that’s exactly what happened to Garrick Higgo.

In a move all too familiar to amateur golfers, the South African golfer was late to his tee time but, rather than being given a slight telling off, Higgo had to accept a costly punishment.

But time is a construct after all, and Higgo made sure

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – Kristian Fonseca has been sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 114 years to life for the 2020 first-degree murders of Jose Estrada and Daniel Zuniga and two attempted murders.

On March 20 of this year, a Ventura County jury found Fonseca guilty of the two murders, two attempted murders, and one count of being in possession of a firearm less than ten years following a conviction.

On October 12, 2019, Fonseca and two others were driving along Ventura Avenue in Santa Paula when they stopped at an East Simpson Street liquor store stated the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

The trio spotted two men standing near a food truck and one of the men who had arrived with Fonseca asked the other men "Where are you from?" before Fonseca opened fire with a shotgun detailed the local prosecutor's office.

One of the men was hit multiple times and suffered life-threatening injuries that required emergency surgery and led to medical complications to this day shared the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

Surveillance video captured some of the incident and officers later recovered four spent shotgun shells from the scene noted the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

A little over one year later, on October 24, 2020, Fonseca was attending a party in a Santa Paula front yard when three rival gang members approached from down the street after a series of earlier verbal confrontations explained the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

A physical altercation ensued at the scene in which Fonseca and one of the rival gang members fought in the street detailed the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

After the fight, Fonseca retrieved a firearm and opened fire on the three men stated the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

Two of the men died from their injuries and the third was injured, but survived shared the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

According to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, evidence showed that Fonseca continued to fire at close range after the victims has fallen, including while one of the men could be heard pleading for his life.

A total of ten 9mm shell casings were recovered from the scene, a majority near the final resting place of the two deceased men noted the local prosecutor's office.

The firearm used during the shooting was never recovered added the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

"Fonseca believed he could avoid capture and accountability for his crimes, but through the dedicated work of Detective Anthony Reginato and our law enforcement partners, justice ultimately caught up with him," said Supervising Senior Deputy District Attorney Blake Heller. "This sentence ensures he will spend the rest of his life paying for the devastation he caused to these victims, their families, and the community."

La Corte Suprema permitió el jueves que las mujeres sigan accediendo a la píldora abortiva mifepristona mediante consultas de telesalud, manteniendo el statu quo mientras funcionarios en Louisiana continúan presionando para limitar la disponibilidad del fármaco en tribunales inferiores.

La Corte Suprema conservadora impuso una suspensión a una decisión del 1 de mayo del Tribunal de Apelaciones del 5.º Circuito de EE.UU. que exigía abruptamente que las mujeres obtuvieran el fármaco mediante visitas presenciales. Ahora la atención volverá al tribunal de apelaciones con sede en Nueva Orleans, que decidirá sobre el fondo de la impugnación de Louisiana.

El tribunal no explicó su razonamiento ni reveló la votación. Los jueces Clarence Thomas y Samuel Alito discreparon de la decisión.

También llamó la atención que el tribunal no aceptara escuchar argumentos en el caso, como ambas partes le habían pedido que hiciera. En su lugar, la decisión significa que el fondo del caso ahora se dirimirá en un tribunal federal de apelaciones y es probable que el asunto llegue nuevamente a la Corte Suprema en el futuro.

El caso es el más significativo relacionado con el aborto que llega al máximo tribunal desde la revocación de Roe v. Wade, el precedente de 1973 que estableció un derecho constitucional al aborto. Y tanto el caso como la mifepristona están estrechamente vinculados a esa decisión. Tras la caída de Roe en 2022, muchos estados conservadores prohibieron los abortos en clínicas, lo que aumentó la demanda de mifepristona.
