Is your relationship emotionally unsafe? Experts explain the signs and what to do

Couples may hide parts of themselves from each other if they don't feel they can safely share their authentic feelings.

By Ian Kerner, CNN

(CNN) — Walking on eggshells. Avoiding each other. Silencing yourself. If you’re engaging in those behaviors, your relationship may not be emotionally safe.

For many couples, having a difficult conversation is like navigating a minefield — and by the time they get to my office, their relationship has often endured multiple blasts. Even during initial sessions, one partner — or both are still tiptoeing around the other, afraid of triggering a sudden explosion.

It makes sense: The nervous system is designed to respond to threats. If it becomes triggered even by a disagreement with your partner — it can go into fight-or-flight mode, making healthy communication near impossible.

But being a couples therapist is like being a minesweeper: We want to create a space that’s emotionally safe, with the goal that a couple will soon be able to defuse those mines on their own with expert precision.

Editor’s note: If you fear for your physical safety, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233) or 911.

What is emotional safety?

Before you can create it, you need to know what emotional safety is. I reached out to some of my valued colleagues for answers.

“Feeling emotionally safe in a relationship means having the understanding that you are accepted as you are without having to fear risking rejection by making yourself vulnerable,” said Marty Babits, a therapist who practices in New York.

“Does your partner support you in sharing your feelings, even when they may not coincide with their own? If that kind of support is nonexistent in your relationship, then you can fairly describe it as emotionally unsafe.”

Emotional safety is a feeling of ease and authenticity, said New York sex therapist Eva Dillon.

“It often arises when we feel at home — either in a place where we feel we belong, or in the presence of someone with whom we can be our authentic selves,” Dillon added. “When we feel safe, we can be vulnerable, which can lead to connection, creativity and even playfulness.”

What goes into an emotionally safe relationship?

An essential aspect of emotional safety is predictability, said Scott Duquette, a therapist who practices in New York.

“To feel secure enough in a relationship to share our authentic and complicated feelings, we need to be able to anticipate and trust that our partner will meet our big vulnerable feelings with empathy, curiosity and care,” he said. “Otherwise, to some degree, we will hide parts of ourselves, until we feel safe.”

Of course, even people in emotionally secure relationships have disagreements, but the key is that they approach problems in an open and curious way, rather than blaming each other. They act as true partners who communicate with respect, even when they’re in conflict.

“The only difference between the best and worst relationships is an ability to repair after a fight, and all repairs start by initiating a conversation,” said George Faller, a New York and Connecticut marriage and family therapist. “There are no shortcuts.”

“I tell my clients that the two most important things in a relationship are self-regulation and communication,” said sex therapist Diana Maryam Nikkhah, who practices in New York and New Jersey. “If we can’t regulate our emotions, it’s difficult to offer emotional sa

A person plays

By Brian Stelter, CNN

(CNN) — Five years ago, Wordle was just a game that creator Josh Wardle played with his partner. Wardle sold the game to The New York Times. Now it’s becoming a prime-time game show on NBC.

The “Wordle” show, announced Monday, is slated to premiere sometime in 2027, the network said.

The production company is now recruiting contestants for the first season. “We are casting teams of THREE PLAYERS to compete for a chance to win a HUGE CASH PRIZE!” the casting website says.

Would-be contestants are encouraged to submit a video testifying to their love for the word game.

The network should have no shortage of candidates to choose from. Wordle became a phenomenon in 2022 when Wardle’s creation went viral and The New York Times acquired the game.

A television version has been in development for “several years,” according to Caitlin Roper, executive editorial director of film and TV at the Times.

“We wanted to honor the specific thrill of Wordle, the way people play and share their scores with each other, but also make something new for TV,” she said.

The Times collaborated with NBCUniversal and NBC late night host Jimmy Fallon’s production company on the project.

The “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie will host the game show, and Fallon joined her to announce the show on Monday morning. They showed clips from a pilot episode that Guthrie taped last year.

It’s “the first game in like decades that everyone plays and everyone talks about,” Fallon said on “Today.”

Guthrie said her kids like to play the game with her.

The NBC edition of “Wordle” may be the first of many. Monday’s announcement said “the ‘Wordle’ format will be licensed globally by NBCUniversal Formats,” which means that networks in other countries could produce local-language versions in the future.

Meredith Kopit Levien, CEO of The New York Times Company, said Wordle on TV “reflects our broader approach of creating experiences people return to and share every day.”

Missouri Tigers running back Ahmad Hardy runs against the Virginia Cavaliers during the 2025 season. Hardy is in stable condition after being shot early May 10 in Mississippi

By Kyle Feldscher, CNN

(CNN) — University of Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy is in stable condition after being shot early Sunday morning in Mississippi, the school’s football team announced Monday morning.

“Ahmad underwent surgery Sunday in Mississippi and is in stable condition,” the statement read. “Ahmad is deeply loved by his teammates, coaches, friends, family and fans. We will continue to stand beside him and his family through this difficult time, offering our love, prayers, strength and support.”

The junior running back starred for the Tigers last year after transferring from the University of Louisiana-Monroe. He ran for 1,649 yards and scored 16 touchdowns for the Tigers last season in his first season in Columbia after running for 1,351 yards and 13 touchdowns in his one season at ULM.

The Mississippi native was a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, which is given to the nation’s top running back at the end of the season. He ran for more than 100 yards seven times last season, including a 300-yard game against Mississippi State. He was named a first-team All-SEC player for the 2025 season.

Further information about the shooting itself wasn’t immediately available.

“A timeline for his return to football activities is unknown at this time,” the school’s statement read. “Mizzou Athletics will provide more information on his status when it becomes available.”
