AUSTIN, Texas. (KEYT) - Some late game mistakes proved costly as UCSB lost in the Austin Regional to host Texas 6-4 as the Gauchos season comes to an end.

The Gauchos jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Rowan Kelly solo home run in the bottom of the first inning.

Dos Pueblos High School alum Kellan Montgomery kept the explosive Texas lineup in check allowing just 2 runs in 5 2/3 innings on the mound while striking out 5.

Each team scored two runs in the sixth inning so UCSB had a 3-2 going into the late stages of the game.

But Texas slugger Aiden Robbins blasted a 2-run home run off of reliever Van Froling to put the Longhorns up 4-3. It was Robbins' 23rd homer on the year and 4th in the regional.

Texas increased the lead to 6-3 in the top of the 8th, scoring their final run on a costly throwing error by reliever AJ Krodel. With two outs and a runner on third he threw an errant pick off throw to third that allowed Ethan Mendoza to score.

The Gauchos got a run back in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI groundout by William Vasseur.

Later in the inning UCSB had runners on the corners with just one out. But Gauchos pinch runner Max Stagg took off for second base while the ball was still in the pitcher's hand. Sam Cozart stepped off the mound and fired a strike to second easily throwing out Stagg who represented the tying run. Following the baserunning blunder, Jonathan Mendez flied out to end the inning with UCSB down 6-4.

UCSB didn't go down without a fight in the bottom of the ninth as they opened with two singles from Xavier Esquer and Cole Kosciusko and had runners on the corners with no outs.

Noah Karliner struck out and Corey Nunez popped out without advancing the runners.

After Liam Barrett was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Texas brought in lefty Luke Harrison to face UCSB's top hitter all year Rowan Kelly.

Harrison got the left-handed hitter Kelly to fly out to left to end the game.

Texas goes 3-0 and advances to the Super Regionals.

UCSB finishes 2-2 in the Austin Regional and ends the year 40-20 following their 16th NCAA Tournament in program history.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (KEYT) - The 15th Annual FCA All Star Football Classic was bigger and better than ever with the addition of the inaugural All Star Girl's Flag Football Showcase.

This year's event was made up of schools from Pioneer Valley, Santa Maria, Paso Robles, and San Luis Obispo high schools representing the North team.

While the South team was made up of schools featuring athletes from Lompoc, Santa Ynez, and Cabrillo high schools. Unfortunately, the athlete's representing Santa Ynez were unable to make it to the game due to scheduling conflicts with events going on the weekend right after Santa Ynez's graduation. So the South team was made up of athletes from just Lompoc and Cabrillo high schools.

The North jumped out to an early six to nothing lead thanks to Santa Maria's Luna Nunez with around four minutes and fifty seconds to go in the first quarter, but the South would respond right at the end of the first quarter with quarterback Tara Terrones, from Lompoc, pitching it to Cabrillo's Leilah Carter who takes it in from two yards out to give the South the eventual seven to six lead after the extra point. From that point on it was all team South as both Lompoc's Indigo Partridge and Tara Terrones would add two more touchdowns to give the South the inaugural win, 19 to 6.

For the evening's main event, the 15th Annual All Star Classic between San Luis Obispo county and Northern Santa Barbara county, the host North team was looking for their first win since 2024. The South has won 10 of the previous 14 meetings between these two.

The first half belonged to the North. Nipomo quarterback Griffin Grosshart found San Luis Obispo's Colbin Garrison over the middle on a 26 yard pass, as Garrison made a spectacular one handed catch to haul it in for the touchdown, to give the North the early seven to nothing lead. The North would find the endzone again in the second quarter as Paso Robles' Kassim Williams took the handoff up the middle for a 21 yard touchdown run, to give the North a 14 to nothing lead at the half.

The South came out firing in the second half, with under six minutes to go in the third quarter Righetti quarterback Nicholas Matautia rolled out and finds Lompoc's Kasch Kubasiewicz on a twelve-yard touchdown pass to get the South on the board, trailing 14 to 7.

The fourth quarter started on a 4th adn 2 for the South, as Matautia handed it off to Williams, who passed it 32 yards down the field to a wide open Caden Vicker, from Righetti, in the back of the endzone. Contra buena parte de los pronósticos que durante meses dieron como favorito al candidato oficialista Iván Cepeda, en Colombia el outsider Abelardo de la Espriella fue el más votado en primera vuelta y llegará al balotaje con la sensación de impulso político. En tanto, Cepeda parece haber alcanzado un techo con su base electoral y no tuvo a la victoria contundente que buscaba el Gobierno de Gustavo Petro.

¿Por qué son De la Espriella y Cepeda los candidatos finales? La votación se explica con el ascenso de una nueva derecha, que desplazó al uribismo tradicional, con los límites del petrismo, con el fracaso de las apuestas de centro y con una elección que volvió a demostrar hasta qué punto la polarización sigue organizando la política colombiana.

Estas son cinco conclusiones para entender lo que ocurrió en las urnas y lo que puede pasar en la segunda vuelta del 21 de junio.

Las encuestas lo anticipaban (pero se quedaron cortas): De la Espriella crecía y capitalizó el momento político. Fue el candidato más votado, superó al que había sido el favorito y logró reunir los votos de la oposición a Gustavo Petro, del uribismo clásico y de los desencantados.

Es un outsider en toda regla. Nunca ha ejercido un cargo público ni se había lanzado a una elección de voto popular. Se lanzó por firmas y no tuvo el apoyo directo de ninguno de los grandes partidos del país. Hizo una campaña amplia y costosa, pero diferente, apelando al espectáculo, con declaraciones polémicas e incendiarias (como Trump, parece que lejos de afectarlo, le dieron más votos).

Para el analista político Miguel Luján, el histrionismo de De la Espriella sin duda fue un factor que lo llevó a su triunfo.

Luján considera que hubo dos claves para el ascenso de De la Espriella en cuanto a sumar a aquellos votantes que se consideraban indecisos en las encuestas: el voto útil (el destino a atajar al rival, en este caso a Cepeda) y el efecto vagón (la tendencia a apoyar al candidato favorito en las encuestas, que daban a De la Espriella una ventaja cada vez mayor sobre Paloma Valencia).

Así, por más de que sea outsider, es evidente que obtuvo el apoyo de muchos movimientos políticos tradicionales que, aunque no lo dijeron frontalmente en la campaña, direccionaron a sus votantes hacia él

De la Espriella además dio golpes de opinión efectivos. Dos días antes de la votación, el candidato tuvo una llamada con Daniel Noboa, presidente de Ecuador, en el que anunciaron el levantamiento de los aranceles y un acuerdo para fortalecer las relaciones. Ese gesto, le dijo Luján a CNN, mostró “ya no un candidato, sino un presidente en acción”.

Pero que De la Espriella haya sido el más votado tomó por sorpresa a muchos, como al analista Andrés Florez, quien le dijo a CNN que algo para destacar es cómo el candidato de ultraderecha le “mordió” votos a lugares a los que el petrismo apostó para mostrar su poder como Gobierno: Bogotá y Atlántico, por ejemplo, donde De la Espriella fue segundo pero no por lejos. Y en Antioquia, bastión del uribismo, De la Espriella no solo superó con creces a la candidata uribista y al mismo Cepeda, sino que arrasó.

Contar con el apoyo decidido de Paloma Valencia para segunda vuelta —como lo anunció ella en su discurso de derrota— le da a De la Espriella los que serían los votos suficientes para ganar la presidencia, si uno ve los números sin matices.

Paloma Valencia llegó a la campaña con el impulso de haber ganado la Gran Consulta por Colombia, pero todas sus apuestas parecieron fracasar. Su lema fue sumar y, al tener al centrista Juan Daniel Oviedo como compañero de fórmula, buscó atraer a los votantes de centro por fuera del partido Centro Democrático del exp

Uruguay llega a esta Copa Mundial de la FIFA golpeada, en medio de fuertes cuestionamientos y en un pozo futbolístico al que cayó después de la Copa América 2024, y que, partido a partido, parece haberse agrandado. Todo eso es cierto. Pero Uruguay es Uruguay. La primera selección campeona del mundo. La que protagonizó el “Maracanazo”. La que fue a un grupo con Italia e Inglaterra y dejó a las dos afuera. Nadie puede descartar a la Celeste.

La selección que dirige Marcelo Bielsa (en su tercer Mundial) fue sorteada al Grupo H, que comparte con Arabia Saudita, Cabo Verde y uno de los grandes candidatos a ganar la copa, España.

El debut será ante el seleccionado árabe en lo que, a grandes rasgos, parece una lucha mano a mano por el segundo lugar de la zona. Los asiáticos y los sudamericanos se han visto las caras en tres oportunidades, con un balance parejo: un triunfo por lado y un empate. Eso sí, el único partido por los puntos se lo llevó la Celeste, cuando ganó 1-0 en en la fase de grupos de Rusia 2018 con un tanto de Luis Suárez.

No es un partido más para Uruguay, que necesitará comenzar con el pie derecho para después no andar haciendo cuentas.

Arabia Saudita sorprendió hace cuatro años, cuando venció a Argentina en el debut de Qatar 2022, así que Uruguay no se puede confiar. Nuevamente llegará con una plantilla armada exclusivamente con jugadores de la liga local, que ha crecido de nivel en el último tiempo, y que se conocen mucho entre sí.

Sus últimos resultados no han sido muy auspiciosos. Este año no ha podido ganar, ya que perdió sus dos amistosos, ante Serbia (1-2) y ante Egipto (0-4). Tiene un duelo más pendiente, ante Senegal, el 10 de junio.

La segunda presentación será ante una debutante, Cabo Verde, una selección sin estrellas ni pergaminos que dejó afuera en la eliminatoria a una potencia africana como Camerún. Será la primera vez que se vean las caras, ya que no hay antecedentes en torneos oficiales ni en amistosos.

La Celeste está obligada a ganar este partido, pero, dependiendo del debut, también puede estar en necesidad de intentar golear, ya que si empata con Arabia Saudita en el debut cada gol será clave. También si vence a los asiáticos podría necesitar golear a los africanos para tener dos escenarios a favor de cara al último partido para ganar la zona (y así evitar un segundo puesto que, casi con toda seguridad, la enfrentará a Argentina en 16avos de final).

Pero cuidado, porque este pequeño país se ha hecho gigante recientemente. Además de relegar al segundo puesto a Camerún en las eliminatorias, hace dos años se metieron en cuartos de final de la Copa Africana de Naciones, confirmando que es una selección en curva ascendente.

Al mando del seleccionado está Bubista, quien lleva seis años al frente del equipo, con un balance positivo: 29 triunfos, 14 empates y 19 derrotas.

Uno de los platos fuertes de la fase de grupos del Mundial. Podría ser perfectamente un mano a mano por el liderato del grupo, un dato para nada menor. La Celeste tiene el historial claramente en contra: en 10 enfrentamientos no conoce la victoria, con cinco empates y otros tantos empates. Se enfrentaron en dos Mundiales, ambos en fase de grupos: 2-2 en 1950 y 0-0 en 1990. La última vez que se vieron fue en la Copa Confederaciones 2013, con triunfo español.

Será una gran prueba para Uruguay, ya que su propio estilo ofensivo suele dejarla vulnerable ante combinados nacionales con buen ataque.

España llega al Mundial siendo campeona de la Eurocopa y subcampeona de la Liga de Naciones de la UEFA. En las eliminatorias arrasó, ganando su grupo con cinco triunfos y un único empate. No pierde un partido en los 90 minutos desde que Colombia la derrotó 1-0 en un amistoso el 22 de marzo de 2024.

(CNN) — Democrats already facing a difficult path to recapture control of the US Senate are grappling with the latest revelations about Graham Platner, the presumptive Democratic nominee set to face Sen. Susan Collins in a must-win race for the party.

Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey said Sunday that he has “concerns” about Platner. “That guy has questions to answer, and that’s what campaigns are for,” he said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Platner’s wife said in a statement Saturday that she was “deeply hurt” after details of her husband’s messages to other women became public, accusing a former campaign official and confidante of betraying her trust. The statement from Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, came after both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal reported that shortly after Platner announced his Senate campaign last year, Gertner flagged to campaign staff sexual text messages her husband had with other women.

Platner, a Marine Corps veteran with no prior political experience, has surged ahead of the June 9 primary, drawing large crowds at his rallies and garnering endorsements from Democrats like Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ruben Gallego. That’s even as his campaign has been hit by revelations from his past, including a since-covered tattoo recognized as a Nazi symbol and comments he posted online denigrating police and White people.

Platner became the Democrats’ presumptive nominee after Maine Gov. Janet Mills dropped out in late April, just weeks before the June 9 primary. Mills, who was recruited to run by national Democratic leaders, will remain on the primary ballot.

Democratic Sen. Andy Kim of New Jersey, in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” wouldn’t say whether he is concerned about Platner but committed to working with “whoever the people of Maine elect.”

Meanwhile, Sen. Chris Murphy offered a more optimistic tone, telling CBS’ “Face the Nation” that there would be a glaring difference to voters between Platner and Collins.

“He certainly admitted that he has made mistakes, but I think this is going to be a pretty clear contrast in Maine between somebody who has spent his life protecting us versus somebody who seems to be protecting Donald Trump’s corruption,” the Connecticut Democrat said.

While Platner’s campaign has been marked by revelations over his past behavior, those earlier developments hadn’t appeared to cut into his support: He led Collins by 9 points in a University of New Hampshire poll released last week.

It’s still unclear how the news of his extramarital sexting will affect his appeal. Genevieve McDonald, the former political director for Platner’s campaign, confirmed to CNN on Saturday that Platner’s wife disclosed to her last year that Platner had been sexting multiple women and that the campaign evaluated the matter as a potential political liability.

CNN has not independently confirmed the existence of the text messages. CNN did verify that an account on the messaging app Kik appears to belong to Platner. The account, under the username “phustle0331,” features a profile photo showing Platner shirtless in a bathroom with a towel on his wai
