Consumer sentiment rebounds slightly after hitting lowest level on record

(CNN) — Americans still feel lousy about the economy and worry that the US-Israeli war with Iran will continue to push up prices.

The University of Michigan’s final consumer sentiment reading for April measured 49.8, a slight improvement from the preliminary report earlier this month but still at the lowest level ever on records that go back to 1952.

“After the two-week ceasefire was announced and gas prices softened a touch, sentiment recovered a modest portion of its early-month losses,” Joanne Hsu, director of the university’s Surveys of Consumers, wrote in a statement.

The Middle East conflict has roiled the global economy and left Americans grappling with sharply higher gas prices, a pickup in inflation and growing uncertainty about their finances.

Current personal finances worsened by 9% in April, and about half of consumers surveyed spontaneously mentioned that high prices were eroding their standards of living, Hsu noted.

Consumers’ year-ahead inflation expectations shot higher this month, rising to 4.7% from 3.8% in March. It was the largest one-month jump since April 2025, a month when President Donald Trump announced a sweeping set of steep tariffs on many nations.

The war and its economic fallout comes at a time when Americans were already navigating high costs of living from a post-pandemic inflation spike and years of prices climbing much faster than has been typical.

Sentiment is hovering just below levels seen in June 2022, when inflation hit a four-decade high.

World Cup final tickets now reselling for over $2 million each

FIFA World Cup 2026 signage at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford

(CNN) — If you and three friends wanted to go watch the World Cup final in person this year, you’re in luck. Four tickets, all sitting together, have been made available behind one of the goals at MetLife Stadium for July 19.

But if that sounds too good to be true? Well, it’s because it kinda is. The tickets in question are being sold for $2,299,998.85 each. That works out to over $9 million for all four.

The Category 1 seats are situated at the top of the lower deck, directly behind the goal and near one of the exits. Seats just two rows ahead are reselling for a little over $16,000, with some even closer to the pitch going for over $24,000.

Another resale ticket is also going for $2,299,998.85, but this one in a Category 3 seat situated almost at the very top of the stadium behind one of the goals.

The seats are up for sale on the FIFA Marketplace, an official platform where people can resell their tickets. FIFA does not control the asking prices on this portal, with ticket holders essentially allowed to charge whatever they want. FIFA does, though, take a 15% cut from both the buying and selling sides.

“FIFA’s Resale Marketplace provides a safe, transparent and secure environment for fans to sell or transfer tickets to other fans,” a FIFA spokesperson told CNN Sports.

“The applicable resale facilitation fees are aligned with industry standards across North American sports and entertainment sectors.”

Eye-watering prices

The platform is available for Canadian, American and international residents, with local legislation preventing Mexican residents from charging more than the face value on the portal.

The cheapest resale price of a standard ticket for the final is now just under $11,000 on the marketplace, with the cheapest wheelchair-accessible ticket fetching almost $15,000.

It comes as FIFA recently released new official tickets for the final on its direct ticketing site last week at $10,990, per the Associated Press.

Quite the eye-watering price for a World Cup that was supposed to be the most affordable in history, adding to the existing concerns around the price of travel around the tournament.

“FIFA’s pricing strategy spans a broad range of price points and categories, reflecting market demand for each match,” the governing body told CNN.

“Tickets have been released across sales phases, such as Category 4 at the most accessible price point and a minimum of 1,000 tickets priced at USD 60 for every match via participating teams, including the final.”

FIFA added it was a not-for-profit organization and that revenue generated would be reinvested to support the development of game.

FDA moves to fast-track review of psilocybin and methylone for mental health

A sign for the Food And Drug Administration is seen outside of the headquarters in White Oak

By Jacqueline Howard, CNN

(CNN) — Some psychedelic drugs, once considered fringe, are now getting a step closer to possibly being approved for use as mental health treatments in the United States.

The US Food and Drug Administration on Friday issued national priority vouchers to three companies studying these psychedelic-based medicines: psilocybin, the active ingredient in “magic mushrooms,” for treatment-resistant depression; psilocybin for major depressive disorder; and methylone, a drug similar to MDMA, for post-traumatic stress disorder – better known as PTSD.

These vouchers were granted under the FDA Commissioner’s National Priority Voucher pilot program, which launched last year as a way to fast-track the review process for certain drugs and biological products seeking approval, potentially cutting down the time it takes for them to reach patients.

The FDA also is now allowing an early phase clinical study of a drug based on the psychedelic ibogaine as a potential treatment for alcohol use disorder to move forward, making the trial the first instance in which the FDA has allowed a clinical study in the United States of the drug, which is derived from the African Tabernanthe iboga plant. While the study has been allowed to proceed, this move does not mean the drug has been approved or found to be safe or effective. The agency says it will continue to review data as it becomes available.

“We are accelerating the research, approval, and responsible access to promising mental health treatments – including psychedelic therapies like ibogaine – to confront our nation’s mental health crisis head-on, especially for our veterans,” Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. said in a news release Friday. “The FDA will prioritize therapies with Breakthrough Therapy designation, where early evidence shows meaningful improvement over existing options for serious mental illness.”

The FDA also announced that it plans to release final guidance to provide recommendations to sponsors developing these products.

This latest action by the FDA follows an executive order that President Donald Trump signed Saturday, directing FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary to prioritize psychedelic drugs that have been granted “breakthrough therapy” status – a designation reserved for therapies that show substantial promise over existing treatment options.

Trump’s executive order calls for accelerating both research on and access to psychedelic treatments, including a $50 million investment in state governments to study how psychedelics might benefit people struggling with mental health disorders.

“These medications have the potential to address the nation’s mental health crisis, including conditions like treatment-resistant depression, alcoholism and other serious mental health and substance abuse conditions,” Makary said in a news release Friday. “As this field moves forward, it is critical that their development is grounded in sound science and rigorous clinical evidence. We owe it to our nation’
