Rep. Eric Swalwell speaks at the 2026 California Democratic Party State Convention in San Francisco

By Clare Foran, CNN

(CNN) — The House Ethics Committee announced on Monday that it has opened an investigation into misconduct allegations against Rep. Eric Swalwell.

The news comes as the California Democrat is under increasing scrutiny after CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle reported that a former staffer accused him sexual assault, describing a night of drinking that ended with Swalwell having sex with her when she could not consent. Swalwell, who suspended his campaign for California governor this weekend, faces calls for expulsion from Congress.

The committee said in a statement that it has opened an investigation into allegations that Swalwell “violated the Code of Official Conduct or any law, rule, regulation, or other applicable standard of conduct in the performance of his duties or the discharge of his responsibilities, with respect to allegations that he may have engaged in sexual misconduct, including towards an employee working under his supervision.”

The panel stated that “the mere fact that it is investigating these allegations, and publicly disclosing its review, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred.”

In addition to the allegation of sexual assault, three other women who spoke with CNN alleged other sexual misconduct, including that Swalwell sent unsolicited nude photos and graphic messages.

Swalwell has strongly and repeatedly denied allegations of sexual assault.

“To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” he posted Sunday on X in his announcement suspending his campaign. “I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.”

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Budget Hearings Start with a Looming Prospective Deficit of about $70-million

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) - The budget preparation workshops have begun in Santa Barbara County with a "clear eye discussion".

That was the first message from County Chief Executive Officer Mona Miyasto. She said there are always mandates expectations and great complexities.

"The hardest decisions we make are about what to stop not what to start," said Miyasato.

The final budget hearings will be in June for the new budget July 1.

Departments looking to make cuts or have proposed hiring freezes could include the Sheriff's Office, Health, Housing and Human Services and other essential services.

Some of the cities in Santa Barbara County have a contract for first responders instead of having their owner police and fire but it all has to be provided by those departments for the cities and area that are unincorporated.

Funding from federal and state sources are being cut and locally there will be changes to balance the local budgets.

One of the first hearings will deal with Santa Barbara County Health. Cuts could reduce clinic operations and that could send more people to a more expensive solution at the emergency rooms locally.

Some of the speakers will be talking about cuts to Cal Fresh and other support programs for the poor.

(More details video, photos and details will be added here later today.)

  • “A Woman’s Life”, de Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet
  • “La bola negra”; de Javier Calvo & Javier Ambrossi
  • “Coward”, de Lukas Dhont
  • “Das Geträumte Abenteuer”, de Valeska Grisebach
  • “All of Sudden”, de Ryûsuke Hamaguchi
  • “The Unknown”, de Arthur Harari
  • “Another Day”, de Jeanne Herry
  • “Sheep in the Box”, de Hirokazu Kore-eda
  • “Hope”, de Na Hong-jin
  • “Nagi Notes”, de Koji Fukada
  • “Gentle Monster”, de Marie Kreutzer
  • “Notre salut”, de Emmanuel Marre
  • “Fjord”, de Cristian Mungiu
  • “The Birthday Party”, de Léa Mysius
  • “Moulin”, de László Nemes
  • “Fatherland”, de Pawel Pawlikowski
  • “The Man I Love”, de Ira Sachs
