La marcha atrás del presidente Donald Trump en Groenlandia coronó uno de los episodios más erráticos que haya involucrado a un presidente moderno en el escenario mundial.

En cuestión de horas este miércoles, Trump pasó de exigir “derecho, título y propiedad” del territorio danés semiautónomo a celebrar un acuerdo marco “infinito” y “para siempre” sobre su futuro.

Pero no revela qué implica este avance. Parece depender de fuerzas adicionales de la OTAN para asegurar el Ártico, algo que podría haber conseguido antes de su semana de caos, si tan solo lo hubiera pedido.

Y no hay señales de que regrese a casa del Foro Económico Mundial de Davos con las escrituras de una vasta y gélida tierra donde pueda plantar la bandera de las barras y las estrellas.

El secretario general de la OTAN, Mark Rutte, declaró en Fox News que la cuestión de la soberanía danesa sobre Groenlandia ni siquiera se planteó durante una reunión con el presidente, lo que reforzará la reputación del afable holandés como “amante de Trump”.

Pero la viceprimera ministra de Suecia, Ebba Busch, advirtió que la tormenta podría no haber terminado aún.

“El progreso de hoy podría ser el dolor de cabeza de mañana”, declaró Busch a Jim Sciutto de CNN en “The Brief”. “Aún es demasiado pronto para saber qué implica realmente este acuerdo”.

Se produjeron escenas absurdas después de que Trump lanzara insultos durante días contra los líderes aliados, lo que generó temores de que la OTAN estuviera a punto de implosionar.

La negativa inicial del presidente a descartar el envío de tropas para tomar Groenlandia —que ya es territorio de la alianza— parecía sacada de una película de suspense futurista.

Trump confundió aún más el asunto con varios días de apariciones públicas desconcertantes y divagando en Washington y Suiza. El miércoles, incluso confundió a Groenlandia con Islandia.

Siempre se deja llevar por sus caprichos y sus arrebatos en redes sociales. Pero al salir de una crisis que él mismo desencadenó, Trump expuso la realidad alternativa que rodea su presidencia, cada vez más impopular.

Y uno de los episodios más desconcertantes de los dos mandatos de Trump hasta el momento profundizará la preocupación sobre adónde llevarán sus volátiles estados de ánimo a la nación y al mundo en los próximos tres años.

“Mi mensaje al presidente Trump y a la administración Trump es: es hora de que recuperen el sentido común y se calmen”, manifestó Busch.

“No voy a cambiar mi política mañana en un nuevo tuit”, indicó.

En los medios conservadores, Trump fue nuevamente ensalzado como el estratega maestro del ajedrez 4D que adoptó una postura maximalista para presionar a los europeos incompetentes a un “trato”.

Esta línea de argumentación se basa en la creencia de que el presidente amenazó a Europa con la desintegración implícita de la OTAN y aranceles devastadores, obteniendo así concesiones asombrosas.

Es difícil tomar esto en serio, ya que no hay indicios de que Europa le haya dado nada a Trump, ni de que este haya asegurado Groenlandia como una adición al territorio estadounidense, como exigió.

En cualquier caso, según los tratados vigentes con Dinamarca, Washington tiene desde hace tiempo la capacidad y el derecho de enviar cualquier recurso militar que desee para reforzar la isla más grande del mundo.

(CNN) — The Supreme Court has gone along for years with President Donald Trump’s unconventional moves and brash legal arguments, as the conservative majority emphasized its regard for the presidency and appeared willing to accept the cost to its own reputation.

Not this time.

During Wednesday arguments over Trump’s attempt to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, the justices signaled this was no normal presidential action and that endorsing it would damage the central bank and their own standing.

The justices have tried to put the spotlight on the presidency and downplayed the conduct of Trump himself. But Trump’s methods were in plain sight Wednesday, especially as justices homed in on the fact that the purported firing began with a Truth Social post last August and that Cook had no opportunity to explain the situation.

On Wednesday, D. John Sauer, once Trump’s personal attorney and now the US solicitor general, met his strongest resistance to date. Sauer’s arguments unsettled, even antagonized, justices across the ideological spectrum.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett, one of the conservatives in the majority that usually sides with Trump, observed that economists had warned that allowing Trump to remove Cook from the historically independent Federal Reserve, “would trigger a recession.”

“I don’t want to be in a position of predicting exactly what the market’s going to do,” she told Sauer, who tried to minimize the concern. “But there’s a risk, General Sauer. I don’t want to be responsible for quantifying the risk. I’m a judge, not an economist.”

“If you look at what actually happened here,” Sauer told Barrett, “she was removed on August 25th and the stock market went up for the next three days. So we’ve already had a kind of natural experiment, so to speak, about whether or not the predictions of doom will really be implemented. Surely, that if investors are jittery or whatever the argument is, you would have seen that on August 25th, and you did not see that.”

Sauer’s winning streak

Trump and Sauer have enjoyed a remarkable winning streak – dating to 2024, when Sauer won him substantial immunity from criminal trial, just months before Trump was elected to his second term.

That case arose from Trump’s efforts to subvert the results of the 2020 election. But the ruling in Trump v. United States swept widely and provided a potent new defense for any president accused of wrongdoing. Trump has appeared to regard the decision, which enhanced the conception of the president’s “conclusive and preclusive” power, as a blank check.

Sauer has repeatedly invoked the case for muscular assertions of executive authority.

Last June, Sauer prevailed in the first major Supreme Court case of Trump’s second term, which tested judges’ authority to impose nationwide orders blocking arguably unconstitutional Trump policies as litigation plays out. That case, Trump v. Casa, centered on an executive order, signed on January 20, 2025, that would end birthright citizenship.

Trump is still defending that measure, which conflicts with the text of the 14th Amendment guarantee that children born in America become citizens irrespective of their parents’ status. Desde que estrenó el formato nuevo, la Champions League no había tenido tanta paridad como en la temporada actual.

Desde que el torneo se disputa bajo el formato “fase de liga”, que se inició en la temporada 2024-2025, los ocho mejores equipos en la primera fase consiguen su boleto automático a los octavos de final. Por su parte, aquellos que terminen entre los puestos 9 y 24 de la tabla general juegan un playoff de dos partidos para intentar clasificar a octavos.

Hasta ahora, solo dos clubes están clasificados directo a los octavos de final: el Arsenal, invicto y claro dominador del campeonato, y el Bayern Munich, que tras su victoria de este miércoles llegó a 18 puntos y se hizo inalcanzable para el FC Barcelona, el equipo que marca la frontera del noveno lugar.

CARPINTERIA, Calif. (KEYT) Lake Cachuma may be spilling now but that wasn't the case a decade ago when the Carpinteria Valley Water District saw the need for a locally controlled rough resistant water supply.

"We learned this lesson in 2016 when Cachuma was a puddle and we were one year away from severe shortages and all the agencies on the South Coast were really stressed about what are we going to do about this drought in 2016 and 2017, "said the district's former General Manager Bob McDonald, "fortunately we had some rainfall that saved us, we can't rely on that in the future, and in the future there is likely going to be a drought that will stress our water supplies and so this will enable us to fill the gaps of droughts in the futures."

On January 14th the board awarded the contract to Walsh Construction that is currently working on a similar project in Calabasas.

Walsh to build the Carpinteria Advanced Purification Project known as CAPP.

"It is a project that will reclaim wastewater that is currently discharged to the ocean and utilize that for drinking water, so we will go through a secondary process, an advanced water treatment process is what they call it, to purify that water and then we will move it through a pipeline and inject it through two injection wells on Linden near St. Joseph Church," said McDonald.

It is different than a desalination plant.

"With desal you have a higher level of salt than with wastewater so its is less energy that a standard desal plant would use," said McDonald, "We are taking wastewater rather than discharging it to the ocean after the wastewater treatment process, we are capturing it and treating it again to a level where we are calling it pure but it is essentially distilled water," said Mcdonald.

In case customers are wondering it is no longer urine or waste.

It potable water, safe for drinking, and taking showers and other household needs.

"Many people don't understand in most cities wastewater treatment plants discharge into rivers and downstream water treatment plants capture that water and treat it that is called adhoc use, we are actually doing an engineered solution that we are making sure we are cleaning the water really well, we are then injecting it into the groundwater basin where it will travel a distance to get further clean and once we pull it out of our wells it is pretty high quality water," said McDonald.

But it doesn't come cheap.

More than a third of the $90 million total capital cost will be paid by grants and customers will see their water bill rates increase by 7.5 percent this year with more increases to follow.

If all goes as planned construction on the 12,000 square foot purification facility at the sanitary district treatment plant will begin this summer and a pipeline will then be linked to wells on Meadow View Lane and Linden Ave.
