(CNN) — China’s military announced Monday it was mobilizing army, navy, air and rocket units around Taiwan in major military drills to test what it said was combat readiness and to send a “serious warning” against any push for Taiwanese independence.

Taiwan’s government condemned the drills, accusing China of “military intimidation.”

China has significantly stepped up Taiwan encirclement drills since 2022, following then US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei which marked a significant show of support for Taiwan and infuriated Beijing’s leadership.

China’s Eastern Theatre Command is conducting the latest drills, called the “Just Mission 2025,” in five blocks of ocean around the island, including in the Taiwan Strait, to Taiwan’s north, southwest, southeast and east.

The areas will be under sea and air space restrictions for 10 hours from 8:30 a.m. local time.

Shi Yi, spokesperson for the Eastern Theater Command, said the drills will focus on “training in sea-and-air combat readiness patrols, seizing comprehensive control” and “blockade and control of key ports and critical areas.”

The latest drill follows a landmark $11.1 billion arms deal between US and Taiwan, which included HIMARS rocket systems, anti-tank and anti-armor missiles, loitering drones, howitzers and military software.

It also comes after Beijing expressed anger at a remarks by Japan’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, who said her country could respond militarily if China were to move to take control of Taiwan by force.

“This exercise serves as a serious warning to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces and external interfering forces, and is a legitimate and necessary action to safeguard national sovereignty and maintain national unity,” Shi said.

China’s Communist Party claims self-ruled and democratic Taiwan as part of its sovereign territory, despite never having controlled it.

In a statement, Taiwan’s presidential spokesperson Karen Kuo said the drills “blatantly undermines the security and stability status quo of the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region” and “openly challenges international laws and order.”

“We strongly condemn the Chinese authorities’ disregard for international norms and their use of military intimidation to threaten neighboring countries,” Kuo said.

At least 13 people have died and 98 were injured after a train derailed in Mexico on Sunday, according to the Mexican Navy. There were 250 people on board.

The derailment occurred in Asunción Ixtaltepec, Oaxaca, on the train’s main line between Veracruz and Salina Cruz.

In a statement, the navy said that 36 people required hospital care and the rest sustained minor injuries. Hundreds of naval personnel and rescue vehicles have been sent to the scene, it said.

An investigation will be opened to determine the cause of the derailment, Mexico’s Attorney General Ernestina Godoy said in a post on X.

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, also addressed the incident, writing on X that she has instructed the Secretary of the Navy and Interior Ministry’s Undersecretary for Human Rights “to travel to the site and personally attend to the families.”

Managed by Mexico’s Navy, the Interoceanic Train links Mexico’s Pacific and Gulf coasts. Its main line only came into service in 2023, under a new program by then-Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador to promote economic development in southern Mexico and create an alternative to the Panama Canal for cargo transport.

El presidente de Ucrania, Volodymyr Zelensky, cambió el domingo la gélida Kyiv, azotada por los misiles, por el comedor decorado con frescos de Mar-a-Lago, donde esperaba obtener la aprobación del presidente Donald Trump para un plan de paz revisado de 20 puntos para poner fin a la guerra en su país.

Tras más de tres horas de conversaciones, ninguno de los dos anunció ningún avance importante en el arduo esfuerzo por poner fin al conflicto iniciado por Rusia en 2022. Ambos enfatizaron que el proceso era complicado y tomaría más tiempo. Trump, quien habló por teléfono ese mismo día con el presidente de Rusia, Vladimir Putin, se mostró relativamente comprensivo con las posturas de Moscú.

Sin embargo, a diferencia de reuniones anteriores, Trump elogió a Zelensky y se mantuvo confiado en que la paz estaba cerca.

“Creo que nos estamos acercando mucho, quizás muy”, dijo el presidente de EE.UU.

Sin embargo, su ausencia física en las conversaciones del domingo no impidió que su presencia se sintiera. Trump habló con el líder ruso durante más de una hora antes de que comenzaran las conversaciones con Zelensky, en una llamada telefónica que, según el Kremlin, el presidente de EE.UU. solicitó. Trump también afirmó que volvería a hablar con Putin después de su reunión con Zelensky.

High Wind Warnings and Advisories are in effect for portions of Ventura County and will stay in play through most of Monday. Winds from the northeast could gust to as high as 50 mph or more below passes and canyons. With the heavy recent rains, soils will be soft and this could lead to some toppling of large trees. Even though the winds are mostly going to affect Ventura County, the whole region will be under the offshore flow and that means we will see a crisp and cool overnight followed by more sunshine and mild temperatures once again on Monday.

Looking ahead, the moderate to strong offshore flow will hold through Monday and then weaken rapidly through Tuesday keeping sunny and dry.  By mid week and the start of 2026, another wave of moisture will sneak up from the south bringing scattered showers for New Year's Day. Models are in fairly good agreement with us seeing some sort of moisture and it should be on the light side. Temperatures will cool once again, but with the southerly flow, not be overly chilly. The rain chances will lessen for Friday, but could increase once again as we head in to Saturday and Sunday. Again, we don't see a repeat of our recent incredibly heavy rainfall, but light to moderate additional rain totals are likely.
