DHS is hunting for any US citizens who may have voted before being naturalized

(CNN) — The Department of Homeland Security is doubling down on the administration’s ongoing investigations into potential voter fraud — reviewing cases involving US citizens and whether they registered to vote, or voted, prior to being naturalized, according to an internal memo reviewed by CNN.

The request, stemming from President Donald Trump’s March executive order on voting, marks one of the latest initiatives by his administration to amplify allegations of voter fraud and pursue the denaturalization of US citizens.

The memo, distributed to leadership last week, states that Homeland Security Investigations’ Identity and Benefit Fraud Unit is overseeing the initiative “designed to identify, investigate, and disrupt activities that undermine the integrity of federal, state, and local elections, and to ensure compliance with applicable election laws.”

It also requested that HSI offices “review all open and closed voter fraud cases… and identify any person(s) who registered to vote, and/or voted in any federal, state, or local election, and subsequently became naturalized United States citizens.”

CNN reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment.

The initiative was first reported by MSNOW.

In addition to the White House push on voter fraud, the administration has tried to broaden federal power to strip citizenship as part of a larger effort linked to Trump’s hardline immigration policies.

The specter of non-citizen voting has been a focus of Trump and his allies, including in Congress, where Republicans are advancing legislation that would require Americans show documents proving their citizenship when they register to vote.

Instances of non-citizens voting are rare, but election officials and voter advocates acknowledge that non-citizens do sometimes end up on registration rolls, often inadvertently.

Several states are already using federal immigration data to vet their rolls and those reviews have frequently flagged false positives, CNN has reported. For instance, in Idaho, after a search of that data tagged 760 potential non-citizens among 1 million-plus resident on the rolls, further review by election officials narrowed the list to about a dozen cases that were referred for possible federal criminal investigation.

The new memo cites a number of federal criminal statutes targeting fraudulent voting and registration for immigration authorities to consider. Those statutes require that the person to have “knowingly” registered to vote or voted when they were ineligible.

The new memo comes as the White House had already been coordinating plans last fall between the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security for sharing data as part of the conservative pursuit of voter fraud.

The aim of that push, according to a source familiar with internal administration discussions that took place late last year, was to identify names on voter rolls who might not be US citizens.

The Justice Department is currently on an unprecedented campaign to obtain private voter data from state voter roll

Exclusive: DHS admits its website showcasing the ‘worst of the worst’ immigrants was rife with errors

By Michael Williams, Alex Leeds Matthews, CNN

(CNN) — The Department of Homeland Security admitted that its website featuring what it calls the “worst of the worst” arrested immigrants was rife with errors and changed the site this week after receiving questions from CNN about it.

DHS created the website in December and the agency, its secretary Kristi Noem and the White House have all heavily promoted it on social media as the Trump administration has sought to justify its aggressive and heavily scrutinized immigration enforcement operations.

The website currently lists about 25,000 people, along with the crimes the agency says they were arrested for or convicted of — including many who were initially linked only to relatively minor offenses.

But DHS this week conceded its website was filled with inaccuracies. After receiving questions about a CNN analysis of the website, a DHS spokesperson admitted on Tuesday that the charges against hundreds of immigrants listed on the website were described incorrectly by the agency.

The spokesperson attributed the inaccuracies to a “glitch” that they said DHS worked to remedy. The spokesperson said on Wednesday that the glitch had been “resolved.”

A CNN review of the website found that thousands of the people listed on the website were described by the agency as being convicted of or arrested for serious charges — including sex crimes or different forms of homicide. But hundreds more who DHS considered the “worst of the worst” were described as being arrested for or convicted of far less serious crimes, including single charges of traffic offenses, marijuana possession or illegal reentry, a federal felony that involves someone reentering the United States after having been previously deported.

CNN could not independently verify the descriptions of each of the thousands of people listed on the website.

Asked whether drawing an equivalence between traffic offenders and killers might undermine the agency’s public messaging about its operations, DHS said that many of those the agency listed with single minor crimes had actually been arrested for or convicted of multiple crimes, some of which were more serious: “This is a glitch on the WOW website the impacted about 5% of the entries.”

“Many of these who are listed as traffic offense and illegal reentry, which is a felony, have additional crimes,” the spokesperson said, adding the agency was working “to fix the issue.” The spokesperson did not answer questions about what type of glitch could cause the people on the website to be described incorrectly.

“All of these individuals have been arrested by ICE and all of them committed crimes breaking our nation’s laws, including some who had felonies for illegal re-entry,” the spokesperson said.

Both the White House and DHS have faced intense scrutiny for using false or misleading claims about some immigrants as a pretext to justify enforcement operations, or describing certain incidents in ways which were later contradicted by video or statements from local officials.

Following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis last month, officials including Noem and White House immigration policy architect Stephen Miller rushed to describe Pretti as “a domestic terrorist” who brandished his gun and intended to massacre law enforcement.

Video later showed that Pretti ne

JPMorgan Chase pushes back on Trump’s $5 billion lawsuit, arguing it ‘fraudulently’ includes Jamie Dimon

By John Towfighi, CNN

(CNN) — JPMorgan Chase on Thursday hit back at President Donald Trump’s debanking lawsuit against the company and CEO Jamie Dimon, filing to move the case from Florida state court to federal court and arguing the president’s initial lawsuit “fraudulently” included Dimon.

JPMorgan Chase lawyers wrote in a notice, first reported by Bloomberg, that Trump’s lawsuit is based on a statute that explicitly exempts federally regulated bank executives who are acting in their official role.

Trump’s lawsuit was filed with respect to Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, which does not apply to federally regulated bank officers, the lawyers argued.

Trump last month sued JPMorgan Chase and Dimon, alleging the bank improperly removed him as a client in 2021 due to political reasons. The suit, initially filed in Florida state court, seeks $5 billion in damages.

JPMorgan is a citizen of Ohio for legal reasons, according to the filing. Since none of the plaintiffs are Ohio citizens, the suit would be eligible to be heard in federal court. The bank’s lawyers argued that by including Dimon, Trump’s lawyers tried to keep the suit in state court. JPMorgan Chase argued Dimon was “fraudulently” included because Florida’s DUTPA exempts federally regulated bank executives acting in their official role, so the suit should move to federal court.

CNN has reached out to JPMorgan Chase and the White House for comment.

JPMorgan’s lawyers also pushed back on Trump’s allegations that the bank dropped him as a customer over political reasons.

“Finally, Plaintiffs threadbare allegations do not allege sufficient facts to plead a claim,” the lawyers wrote.

“Plaintiffs further fail to plead the basic facts necessary to establish their blacklist claim,” the lawyers wrote. “It is unclear what Plaintiffs mean by this term. They do not explain what this blacklist entails, when it was created, to whom it was supposedly circulated, or any other detail describing it. Nor is it plausible that JPMorgan could create such a list consistent with the complex federal regulatory scheme to which it is subject.”
