(CNN) — AI company Anthropic announced this week it is giving $20 million to a political group campaigning for more regulation of the technology – but its main rival, OpenAI, is telling its employees it won’t be making similar donations.

In a memo to staff on Thursday, OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane said that while OpenAI allows its employees to “express their ideological beliefs in terms of who they support,” the company itself won’t be making similar moves anytime soon.

OpenAI is not contributing to political action committees or 501(c)(4) social-welfare nonprofits because OpenAI wants to retain control of its political spending, Lehane told CNN in an interview.

“We do believe it’s really important that this issue transcends partisan politics,” Lehane said.

The stakes are especially high this year. Both Anthropic and OpenAI are reportedly mulling what could be blockbuster initial public offerings this year, while Congress is working to craft the rules of the road for industry for the next decade or longer. And as the midterm elections approach, voters are increasingly worried about the consequences of AI development, from energy bills to privacy to job loss.

Though OpenAI is not making super PAC donations, its executives and biggest investors have made major contributions. President and co-founder Greg Brockman and his wife, Anna, have donated $25 million to a super PAC that supports President Donald Trump.

Brockman, as well as several of OpenAI’s top investors, have collectively donated more than $100 million to a bipartisan super PAC called Leading the Future that advocates against state-level AI regulation in favor of a national regulatory framework. The grouphas already paid for ads opposing New York State Assemblyman Alex Bores, who is running in New York’s 12th congressional district as an outspoken voice for AI guardrails.

Anthropic was founded with a focus on AI safety and often highlights the need for regulation in AI development. CEO Dario Amodei regularly writes long essays and gives interviews about the risks posed by AI.

The company said this week it is donating to the Public First Action super PAC, a bipartisan group that advocates for AI regulation, because they “don’t want to sit on the sideline” while AI regulation is being developed.

“(W)e need good policy: flexible regulation that allows us to reap the benefits of AI, keep the risks in check, and keep America ahead in the AI race,” Anthropic wrote in their announcement. “That means keeping critical AI technology out of the hands of America’s adversaries, maintaining meaningful safeguards, promoting job growth, protecting children, and demanding real transparency from the companies building the most powerful AI models.”

But Anthropic’s position has placed them in the crosshairs of the Trump administration. David Sacks, the White House’s AI czar, blamed Anthropic last year for “the state regulatory frenzy that is damaging the ecosystem. “Anthropic is running a sophisticated regulatory capture strategy based on fear-mongering,” he wrote on X.

La NBA está lista para entregarle a los aficionados una nueva edición de su Juego de las Estrellas, u All-Star, como se lo conoce en inglés. La edición de 2026 llega con un formato renovado, en un nuevo intento de los organizadores por atrapar mayor audiencia, o, en el peor de los casos, no seguir perdiéndola.

El desafío es grande. Además de ausencias destacadas, como la de Stephen Curry o Giannis Antetokounmpo por lesión, la NBA lucha contra una gran complicación para su armado de este evento, siempre sinónimo de espectáculo visual: la falta de timing. Dicho de otro modo, el mal momento en el que llega para que los protagonistas, vamos a decirlo literalmente, jueguen en serio.

A diferencia de lo que pasa en el fútbol americano, donde el Pro Bowl (el Juego de las Estrellas de la NFL) se juega al termino de la temporada regular y los playoffs (y solo antes del Super Bowl), el de la NBA llega en plena competencia, a menos de 30 partidos del cierre de la fase regular. Por eso, el incentivo para arriesgar el físico y ofrecer real competencia es, cuando menos, poco.

Sabiendo esto y buscando que el evento sea al menos novedoso, los organizadores apostaron por cambiar el formato, y apostar por un triangular.

Veinticuatro basquetbolistas fueron seleccionados para este evento, quedando repartidos en dos equipos formados enteramente por estadounidenses y uno por extranjeros.
Estos tres conjuntos se enfrentarán todos contra todos (sistema conocido como round robin) y los mejores dos jugarán también una final.

El nuevo formato tiene otra novedad extra: los partidos durarán solo 12 minutos, exactamente lo que dura un cuarto de los encuentros de la NBA (a nivel FIBA duran 10). Es decir que el evento total tendrá la duración de un partido completo: 48 minutos, repartidos en cuatro juegos de 12 cada uno.

Para este año también se terminó la votación por puesto, es decir que los jugadores más votados se ganaron su lugar, sin importar su lugar en la cancha. Los únicos que fueron seleccionados por fuera de la votación son los reemplazos de los lesionados (Stephen Curry, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander y Giannis Antetokounmpo entre ellos), elegidos por el comisionado Adam Silver.

(CNN) — The US military conducted a strike against another alleged drug-trafficking boat on Friday, killing three people, according to US Southern Command.

“On Feb. 13, at the direction of #SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations,” SOUTHCOM wrote on X, adding that no US military personnel were harmed in the strike.

The statement did not specify where the strike took place but said “Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Caribbean and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations.”

At least 124 people have now been killed in strikes on suspected drug boats as part of Operation Southern Spear, a campaign the Trump administration says is aimed at curtailing narcotics trafficking.

Las fuerzas armadas de EE.UU. llevaron a cabo un ataque contra otra embarcación que presuntamente tráficaba drogas este viernes, matando a tres personas, según el Comando Sur de EE.UU.

“El 13 de febrero, bajo la dirección del comandante de #SOUTHCOM, el general Francis L. Donovan, la Fuerza de Tarea Conjunta Southern Spear realizó un ataque cinético mortal contra una embarcación operada por Organizaciones Terroristas Designadas”, escribió SOUTHCOM en X, agregando que ningún miembro del personal militar estadounidense resultó herido en el ataque.

El comunicado no especificó dónde tuvo lugar el ataque, pero indicó que “la inteligencia confirmó que la embarcación transitaba por rutas conocidas de narcotráfico en el Caribe y estaba involucrada en operaciones de narcotráfico”.

Al menos 124 personas han muerto hasta ahora en ataques contra embarcaciones sospechosas de tráfico de drogas como parte de la Operación Southern Spear, una campaña que el Gobierno de Trump dice que está destinada a frenar el tráfico de narcóticos.
