In 2026, budgeting for a dog is no longer an afterthought. For many American households, it is a planned expense that sits alongside groceries, healthcare, and housing. As inflation has reshaped everyday spending, dog owners are paying closer attention to where their money goes and what they are getting in return.

Dogs are increasingly treated as family members, and that shift shows up clearly in household budgets. Rather than cutting pet expenses outright, many owners are becoming more selective. They are prioritizing areas that directly affect their dog’s health and quality of life, while trimming back in places that feel less essential.

Food, in particular, has emerged as one of the most intentional spending categories. While premium dog food often carries a higher monthly cost, many owners now see it as part of a longer-term strategy to support health and potentially avoid future medical issues. This shift occurs every day in conversations with dog parents who are planning not just for next month, but for the years ahead.

In this guide, Spot & Tango breaks down what it really costs to own a dog in 2026, how those costs have changed, and why food quality has become a protected line item for so many households.

The Average Cost of Owning a Dog in 2026

While no two dogs cost exactly the same to care for, national trends show that dog ownership has become a meaningful financial commitment. Costs vary by location, dog size, and lifestyle, but most fall into predictable categories that owners can plan for.

First-Year and One-Time Expenses

For new dog owners, the first year is typically the most expensive. Common costs include:

  • Adoption or breeder fees
  • Initial veterinary exams and vaccinations
  • Spay or neuter procedures
  • Crates, beds, leashes, collars, and bowls
  • Training classes or private sessions

These upfront expenses can add up quickly, especially for puppies or large breeds that require more equipment and early training.

Recurring Annual Costs

Once the first year passes, most dog-related expenses become ongoing and easier to anticipate. These typically include:

  • Dog food
  • Routine veterinary visits
  • Preventative medications such as flea, tick, and heartworm
  • Grooming, either professional or at home
  • Licensing and registration

Food is one of the largest recurring costs, particularly for medium and large dogs. In recent years, it has also become one of the categories with the widest range in price, depending on quality and type.

Common Optional Expenses

Many dog owners also budget for expenses that are not strictly required but are increasingly common:

  • Pet insurance
  • Boarding or pet sitting during travel
  • Ongoing training or enrichment activities
  • Toys, treats, and supplements

While these costs are often labeled optional, surveys and consumer behavior suggest they are becoming standard for many households.

Want to save more money this year? Put it on your calendar

Most people approach saving money with good intentions, but it can be challenging to stay on track without the right tools.

One surprisingly simple solution is implementing a financial calendar. The visual nature of a calendar may help you view your savings goals as more pressing than a simple to-do list. Forbright Bank explains how it can give you a sense of time and a helpful visual to see deadlines approaching and identify opportunities you might otherwise miss.

What Is a Financial Calendar?

A financial calendar is exactly what it sounds like—a visual timeline of your financial year, marked with key dates, deadlines, and opportunities to save. By mapping out your money in advance, you may transform saving from an afterthought into a planned event, giving yourself the structure and accountability that make financial discipline achievable.

Seeing your finances laid out visually can be helpful, just like understanding mathematical data can be easier with a chart or graph. When your savings goals are only abstract intentions, they can be easy to postpone or ignore. But when your calendar reads, “Save $500 from tax refund” on April 15, that goal becomes concrete and actionable.

Key Dates for Your Financial Calendar

Start by identifying the major financial milestones in your year and consider tying savings goals to each one. Here are some key dates you might want to include:

  • Paydays. If you’re paid on a regular cadence, include paydays on your calendar so you can plan how to use each paycheck. If you’re self-employed or have irregular income, you can build savings from which to pay yourself on a more regular schedule.
  • Bonus season. Bonus payouts vary by industry, but many companies distribute bonuses during the first quarter of the year. Note your expected bonus date and automate a portion of it to go into savings. Committing to save it in advance makes it easier to avoid unplanned spending when that money hits your account.
  • Income Tax Day. Most Americans file tax returns between January and April 15. If you expect to receive a refund, mark your expected deposit date and designate a specific percentage to save before you’re tempted to spend it.
  • Bill due dates. Be sure to add annual or semi-annual payments like insurance premiums or property taxes that can catch you off guard. By seeing them months in advance, you can set aside small amounts from each paycheck rather than scrambling when they arrive.
  • Benefit enrollment. Mark dates for benefit enrollment periods at work, typically in the fall. This is your chance to adjust retirement contributions, set up flexible spending accounts, or make other changes that have an impact on your savings.
  • Key life changes. If you expect to e

7 eczema medications to help for better skin control

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects millions of children and adults. It often causes itching, redness, dryness, flaking, and sometimes painful cracks or infections. Because eczema tends to flare and subside over time, finding the right medication strategy is essential for long term relief and skin health.

SaveHealth, a prescription discount card website, explores the most effective eczema medications available today, including topical creams, oral therapies, and injectable treatments for more severe cases. It is designed for people who want to understand their options, compare treatments, and make informed decisions with their healthcare provider.

Understanding eczema and treatment goals

Eczema occurs when the skin barrier is weakened, allowing moisture to escape and irritants to penetrate. This leads to inflammation and an overactive immune response in the skin.

Eczema treatment goals typically include:

  1. Reducing inflammation and redness.
  2. Relieving itching and discomfort.
  3. Repairing and protecting the skin barrier.
  4. Preventing flare-ups.
  5. Improving quality of life.

Treatment plans depend on eczema severity, age, affected areas, cost, and how the skin responds over time.

Types of eczema medications

Eczema medications fall into several categories based on how they work and how they are used.

Common categories include:

  • Topical nonsteroidal creams and ointments.
  • Topical steroid creams.
  • Oral medications for immune modulation.
  • Injectable biologic therapies.
  • Supportive treatments such as antihistamines and moisturizers.

This article focuses primarily on prescription eczema treatments, especially those commonly used when over-the-counter options are not enough.

7 eczema medications and treatment options

Below is an overview of widely used eczema medications, including how they work and who they are best suited for.

1. Topical calcineurin inhibitors

Calcineurin inhibitors reduce inflammation by targeting immune activity in the skin without steroidal activity. They reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines, in particular, IL-2, IL-4 and IFN-γ in skin conditions like eczema. They are especially useful for sensitive areas, such as the face, neck, and skin folds.

Key medications include:

  • Elidel (generic name: Pimecrolimus)
  • Protopic (generic name: Tacrolimus)

These medications are often prescribed for mild to moderate eczema or for patients who need steroid-sparing options. They do not cause skin thinning, making them suitable for long-term use under medical guidance.

2. Topical phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitors

This newer class of topical medication reduces inflammation by blocking the PDE-4 enzyme involved in the immune response. Thi

Teen arrested in alleged ISIS-inspired attack plot intended for New Year’s Eve near Charlotte

Christian Sturdivant was booked in Gaston County Jail on December 31.

(CNN) — After about a year of planning, an 18-year-old was arrested on New Year’s Eve in a suburb of Charlotte, North Carolina, accused by federal prosecutors and the FBI of intending to carry out a terror attack using knives and hammers that same day.

Christian Sturdivant was arrested and charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, Russ Ferguson, US Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, announced in a joint news conference with the FBI late Friday morning.

The teen was communicating online with someone he thought was a member of the violent extremist group, ISIS, Ferguson said. Instead, he was chatting with an undercover NYPD agent.

Sturdivant, a US citizen, was arrested before any such plan could commence on New Year’s Eve as he was being released from a medical facility, James C. Barnacle Jr., FBI special agent in charge, said. While the teen planned to carry out an attack that day, it was not tied to a specific New Year’s event.

Sturdivant is currently being held at Gaston County Jail on a federal hold, jail records show. He faces a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years if convicted, Ferguson said. The teen appeared in court for the first time Friday and another hearing is set for January 7. CNN has reached out to his attorney but has not heard back.

This appears to be at least the second known alleged attack plot disrupted during the New Year holiday this year following a separate incident in Los Angeles, where the FBI arrested four people for allegedly working together on a bomb plot that was set to take place around the city on New Year’s Eve.

Teen plotted to ‘do Jihad soon,’ authorities said

From conversations with two undercover agents, Ferguson said it became clear Sturdivant was planning to “do Jihad soon,” clearly outlining to agents the venue for his alleged attack: a local grocery store and a fast food restaurant in Mint Hill, a Charlotte suburb more than 10 miles outside the city.

During a search warrant executed at Sturdivant’s home, FBI agents found hammers and knives hidden under his bed, handwritten notes about the alleged plot and a list of targets along with details about what he’d wear during and how he would execute it.

From what authorities described as a manifesto, titled “New Years Attack 2026,” investigators gathered Sturdivant was targeting Jews, Christians and the LGBTQ community with a goal to stab “as many civilians as possible,” authorities said.

The note also had a section headlined as “martyrdom op,” which described a plan to attack any law enforcement that responded to the attack with the intent that Sturdivant would die a martyr, the FBI said.

Ferguson called the attack “very well planned,” adding Sturdivant “was preparing for Jihad and innocent people were going to die, and we were very, very fortunate they did not.”

State Parks notes Sable Offshore still needs authorization to restart oil production locally

Kraig Pakulski 0 54 Article rating: No rating

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – Sable Offshore has not completed all necessary steps to restart oil production locally a state regulator confirmed Friday.

On Wednesday, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decided to not immediately halt the Houston-based company's plans to use pipelines shuttered since the Refugio Oil Spill of 2015 to transport oil, but according to California State Parks, an easement necessary to restart production has not been granted for pipelines that cross through the state agency's jurisdiction.

"Sable still needs to obtain an easement for the portion of the pipeline on State Parks land prior to restarting operations," stated the Deputy Director of Communications and Marketing for California State Parks Marty Greenstein in response to Your News Channel's inquiries. "On Nov. 13, 2025, State Parks informed Sable it will be preparing an Initial Study to determine the proper CEQA documentation for Sable’s easement request at Gaviota State Park."

The request to stay the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration's decision to take over oversight of Sable Offshore's restart plans using emergency permits was denied after environmental groups challenged the Trump Administration's approval.

Plaintiff's alleged in their suit filed on Dec. 24, that the federal regulator had, "bypassed the required public notice, opportunity for public participation, statement of reasons for its decisions, and other conditions generally required for pipeline safety regulation waivers under the federal Pipeline Safety Act".

In response, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration argued that the emergency permits granted to Sable Offshore were based on a national energy emergency declared by President Trump earlier this year and could bypass regulatory requirements.

Earlier in December, an 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission revealed that the U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration informed Sable Offshore that it had approved its restart plans for Line CA-324 and Line CA-325 on Dec. 22, 2025.

Line CA-324, formerly known as Line 901, has remained dormant since it ruptured, causing the 2015 Refugio Oil Spill which impacted 150 miles of California coastline and destroyed thousands of acres of shoreline habitats.
