The Philippines’ long battle against Islamist extremism is back in the spotlight following Bondi attack

By Jessie Yeung, CNN

(CNN) — As Australian authorities try to retrace the steps and understand the motivations of the Bondi Beach gunmen who killed 15 people on Sunday, one key focus has emerged: their travel to the Philippines last month, shortly before the attack.

Officials say father-son duo Sajid and Naveed Akram journeyed to a southern part of the archipelago nation that has endured a painful history of Islamic extremism.

They stayed in the country for nearly a month; then, two weeks after departing, they carried out their massacre on the famed Sydney beach, targeting a Jewish celebration in what was Australia’s worst mass shooting in decades. Later, homemade Islamic State flags were found in their car.

There’s a lot that’s still not clear. Authorities haven’t provided any more details on where they traveled within the Philippines during their trip, what they were doing, and whether the trip was directly linked at all to the attack.

“The reasons why they went to the Philippines and the purpose of that and where they went when they were there is under investigation at the moment,” New South Wales police said on Tuesday, adding that the pair hadn’t triggered any security alerts during their trip.

The son had previously been examined by Australia’s domestic security agency six years ago for his close ties to a Sydney-based Islamic State (IS) terrorism cell, but was not deemed a threat.

However, Australian counterterrorism officials believe the men underwent military-style training while in the Philippines, public broadcaster ABC reported on Tuesday.

And experts tell CNN that although terrorism in the Philippines has declined in recent years, many Islamic militant groups remain active and armed in more remote regions – and are willing to train foreign fighters that have long flocked to the Southeast Asian nation.

“Since the Al Qaeda days, the Philippines has always been regarded as the terrorism academy in Asia, because its location and existing militant groups provide a conducive environment for training activities,” said Rommel Banlaoi, chairman of the Philippine Institute for Peace, Violence and Terrorism Research.

The Philippine government said this week it is in touch with Australian law enforcement counterparts.

“We reaffirm our support for efforts that protect communities from intolerance, hatred, and violence,” Foreign Minister Theresa P. Lazaro wrote on X after speaking with her Australian counterpart.

Where are these extremists based?

Militant groups have been active in southern Philippines for decades and attracted foreign nationals to join the cause even before the 9/11 attack in New York, said Banlaoi.

The Philippine group Abu Sayyaf was an early ally of Al Qaeda, but in more recent years many militant outfits began more openly pledging allegiance to, or aligning themselves with, IS – a trend that was replicated across much of the globe.

Multiple groups gathered under the umbrella term of ISEA – the Islamic State East Asia. In 2017, the Islamic State even released a video calling for its fighters to travel to the Philippines instead of Iraq and Syria, according to Australia’s national security agency ASIO.

Most terrorist activity is concentrated on the southern island of Mindanao, which – unlike the rest of the largely Catholic nation – has a majority Muslim population.

For decades, Mindanao has been wracked by unrest and conflict, including clashes between authorities and a local separatist mov

Cayden Ward scored 25 points in loss

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (KEYT) - Sophomore guard Cayden Ward (above) finished with a team leading 25 points Tuesday evening, but the Cal Poly men’s basketball program – after trailing Montana State by 14 with four-and-a-half minutes to play – fell to the Bobcats inside Mott Athletics Center, 83-80.

Sophomore guards Hamad Mousa and Peter Bandelj added 16 and 14 points, respectively, for Cal Poly (5-7), which faced a 77-63 deficit before a Mousa three-pointer sparked a 13-2 run that dropped Montana State’s lead to 79-76 with 56 seconds remaining.

A Bandelj layup following a missed Mousa free throw then cut the gap to one with 35 seconds left, but Montana State (5-7) twice escaped Cal Poly’s inbounds defense with dunks at the other end of the floor from guard Patrick McMahon. At the buzzer, a potential game-tying three-pointer from Mousa fell short.

Ward grabbed a game high eight boards for Cal Poly, which outrebounded Montana State, 47-39.

Cal Poly knocked down four of its initial five attempts from the floor Tuesday, taking a 9-2 lead after two minutes before the Bobcats hit back with a 10-1 run. With Montana State leading by as much as 33-27 late in the first half, Cal Poly thrice tied the matchup before a free throw from freshman guard Austin Goode with a second to go handed the Mustangs a 41-40 halftime lead.

Montana State, however, surged ahead for good three minutes into the second half after a three-pointer from guard Jed Miller handed the visitors a 49-46 lead.

Cal Poly Noteworthy (versus Montana State Dec. 16)

Up Next: Cal Poly plays its final scheduled non-conference road matchup of the season when visiting UCLA on Friday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. The Mustangs make their eighth all-time visit to Westwood and first since an 88-83 setback on Nov. 15, 2015.
With his 11th double-digit scoring game in as many outings this season, Hamad Mousa maintained the Big West’s scoring lead at 20.1 points per game.
Cayden Ward’s 25-point effort – three points shy of his career high – improved his scoring average to 15.2 points per game (10th among Big West players).

Who is Nick Reiner’s attorney, Alan Jackson?

Kraig Pakulski 0 107 Article rating: No rating

By Andy Rose, Norma Galeana, Hanna Park, CNN

(CNN) — Los Angeles-based Alan Jackson – who has taken on a number of famous clients in his work as a defense attorney – says he is representing Nick Reiner following Reiner’s arrest in the murder of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner.

Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested late Sunday, hours after his parents were found dead inside their Brentwood home. He is being held without bail.

Jackson said it was not clear when a first court appearance for Reiner would take place. He told CNN on Tuesday that his client had not been medically cleared to be transported from jail to the courthouse.

A former Los Angeles prosecutor, Jackson has become one of city’s most recognized defense attorneys, representing former Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and actor Kevin Spacey.

His most recent success in court came in Massachusetts in defense of Karen Read, who in June was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the death of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, in 2022. Jackson argued investigators exhibited “blatant bias” that tainted the case.

“The truth is, Karen Read is not guilty, not because of technicalities, but because the facts, the law, the science, the physics, the data, they all say so – they demand it,” he said during his closing arguments.

Jackson called the case “the most challenging case I’ve ever tried,” while speaking to local radio host Howie Carr.

The verdict earned Jackson a feature profile in Vanity Fair, and his firm now maintains a section on its website devoted to press coverage of the case.

Jackson represented Spacey in a 2019 sexual assault case in Massachusetts, in which the actor was accused of alleging groping an 18‑year‑old man at a Nantucket bar. The charge was dropped by prosecutors “due to the unavailability of the complaining witness,” a court filing said.

In Hollywood, Jackson is best known for defending Harvey Weinstein against rape and sexual assault charges, ending in conviction and a 16-year sentence. Jackson argued some accusers had been involved in a “transactional relationship” with Weinstein.

Known for “wining seemingly unwinnable cases,” a biography on his firm Werksman Jackson & Quinn’s website said he has also handled cases for business executives, NBA players and foreign dignitaries.

He is a veteran of the US Air Force, serves as an adjunct professor at Pepperdine and Loyola law schools, and appears regularly as a legal analyst on national news programs, the website said.

Prior to going into private practice, Jackson served as a prosecutor in the major crimes division in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, where he worked on high-profile criminal cases, including the 2009 murder conviction of music producer Phil Spector.

He later made an unsuccessful run for Los Angeles County district attorney in 2012.

When it comes to his latest client, Nick Reiner, Jackson declined to tell reporters how
