SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) — Many shoppers are sad to see the Isla Vista Food Coop’s Santa Barbara location close down. 

“I mean, it's just sad to see something so good go. It's obviously so good for the community to have this little thing on the side of the street,” said local shopper Atalia Zahrndt.

 “I got to know like everyone who works here, so it's like a fun little, like I get to see my community when I come in and buy my stuff,” said local shopper Sonika Biyani.

The co-op attributes the closure to ongoing financial struggles.

An online statement reads in part: “Expenses remain high, sales remain too low, and we can’t sustainably operate a second location without risking the stability of the cooperative.” 

The store will now revert to the Cantwell’s Market and Deli. 

“They actually had a little more business as the deli when it was Cantwell's and the variety of salads that they had at the deli was greater too. I used to ask, ‘You don't have any yam salad today?’ And the next day they would have it,” said Mike Daggett, who lives in Santa Barbara. 

The deli owners say they are excited to bring their culinary expertise to the forefront. 

Pradeep Shastri shares his favorite pasta recipe he’s planning on incorporating in a special menu. 

“Tomato, onion, garlic, feta cheese, and you mix it together with fresh basil and make a vegetarian version with some really julienne of vegetables in there. And then on the same pasta you can create a nice grilled chicken on the top of that or a piece of salmon on that,” said Shastri.

Shastri says he hopes to hire some of the same employees that helped run the co-op. 

He says he’s excited to make it a place with small town charm and culinary flair, adding that there will be indian and italian fusion. 

“We want to make sure we make every client who walks in here happy with the food, with the hospitality. And I know we cannot compare, compete with the big players like, you know, Costco and everybody else, but we are a convenience and a common cafe deli store,” said Shastri.

The State Street store will officially close on December 26th.  

The co-op location in Isla Vista will remain open.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KUNA) – La familia de un hombre de Cathedral City con problemas mentales que apuñaló a un agente del sheriff del condado de Riverside, lo que provocó que este le disparara fatalmente por la espalda, recibió $13.1 millones tras un juicio civil contra el condado, según se anunció hoy.

Logina Perez Monroy y David Monroy, padres de Jeffrey Alexander Monroy, presentaron una demanda alegando violaciones de derechos civiles federales en relación con la muerte de su hijo de 33 años, así como otros factores que justifican indemnizaciones.

Tras un juicio de nueve días que finalizó el jueves en el Tribunal de Distrito de EE. UU. en el centro de Los Ángeles, el jurado presentó el veredicto de alto costo a favor de los demandantes, cuyos abogados lo calificaron como el veredicto por “mayor uso excesivo de la fuerza” contra el condado.

No quedó claro de inmediato si los acusados tenían la intención de apelar. “No hay excusa para dispararle al Sr. Monroy varias veces por la espalda cuando no representaba ninguna amenaza para el agente”, declaró el abogado de los demandantes, Houman Sayaghi. “Afortunadamente, el jurado vio la verdad, llegó a la conclusión correcta y responsabilizó a las fuerzas del orden por sus atroces acciones”.

El abogado Kaveh Navab afirmó que era un honor y un privilegio representar a los demandantes.

“Nada podrá reemplazar lo que perdieron, pero este veredicto representa justicia y rendición de cuentas”, declaró Navab.

Aunque el condado fue el principal objetivo de la demanda, el sheriff Chad Bianco y el agente que disparó los tiros fatales, el cabo Rubén Pérez, también fueron mencionados.

Los demandados presentaron una respuesta a la demanda civil en 2021, declarando que negaban rotundamente “toda responsabilidad o irregularidad”, cuestionando las “conclusiones y argumentos legales” presentados por los demandantes.

(CNN) — Ukraine’s domestic security service, the SBU, said Monday that it struck a Russian submarine in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, causing critical damage to the vessel and effectively disabling it.

In a statement, the SBU said the operation, which used underwater “Sub Sea Baby” drones, was the first attack of its kind. Video shared by the SBU showed a large explosion at a port.

“As a result of the explosion, the submarine suffered critical damage and was effectively put out of action,” the SBU said. CNN could not independently verify the claim.

Russia acknowledged the Ukrainian attack but said it failed and that no ships or submarines were damaged.

“The enemy’s attempt to carry out sabotage using an unmanned underwater vehicle failed to achieve its goals,” state media quoted Alexei Rulev, head of the Black Sea Fleet press service, as saying. Rulev denied Ukrainian reports that a submarine was destroyed at the Novorossiysk naval base, Russian media reported.

The Kilo-class submarine is used to launch Kalibr cruise missiles, firing up to four at a time, according to the SBU statement. Russia has used the missiles throughout the war to strike Ukraine.

The agency added that the submarine is known as a “Black Hole” because of the hull’s ability to absorb sound and remain undetectable by sonar. It said that class of submarine costs around $400 million. Due to international sanctions, which have hampered Russia’s access to technological components, building a similar submarine could now cost up to $500 million, the SBU said.

The SBU said the vessel had been forced to remain in the port of Novorossiysk due to past successes of Ukraine’s sea drone operations, which forced Moscow to move many of its ships and submarines from Sevastopol Bay in the occupied Crimean Peninsula.

‘Ceasefire now seems possible’

The attack Monday came amid a sustained bout of diplomacy to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. It was announced soon after the conclusion of a second day of talks between US and Ukrainian delegates in Berlin.

At a news conference Monday in Berlin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kyiv must be “absolutely sure” about how its allies will guarantee its security before making any decisions about the front line in a potential peace settlement with Russia.

Speaking alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Zelensky said that any security guarantees should include monitoring the ceasefire.

“That is really the basis for security guarantees, because the question is: Who will carry out the monitoring? What sanctions will be applied if the monitoring missions are disrupted?” Zelensky said.

Although Zelensky said these questions have not yet been answered, Merz said the United States offered Ukraine “significant” guarantees in the talks in Berlin.
