Memorial Day weekend could be costly and chaotic whether you’re on the road, in the sky or just staying home

(CNN) — Despite sky-high fuel prices and soaring grocery bills, millions of Americans are sticking to their Memorial Day plans.

But it’s not just wallet woes. Travel disruptions and looming severe weather also threaten to derail the unofficial start to summer.

Here’s what to expect this holiday weekend:

$4-plus gas everywhere

For the first time since 2022, the average price of gas in all 50 states has surged past $4 a gallon, AAA said this week. And there’s no sign of relief at the pump as the war in Iran drags on.

Nonetheless, AAA expects 39.1 million travelers to hit the road this weekend — a slight uptick from 39 million last Memorial Day weekend.

Another 3.66 million will fly domestically, AAA predicts. But some air travelers could be sidetracked by a hole on a major runway.

Sinkhole at LaGuardia swallows plans

One of only two runways at New York’s bustling LaGuardia Airport remains closed as fallout from Wednesday’s discovery of a sinkhole on the pavement spills into the weekend.

By midday Friday, more than 400 delays were reported at LGA, according to the tracking site FlightAware. That number could balloon as Runway 4/22 stays offline into Saturday.

Repairs were initially expected to be finished on Thursday. But inspectors using ground-penetrating radar found “possible areas of concern,” the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said in a statement.

“Out of an abundance of caution, engineering crews have decided to conduct additional inspections that necessitate the continued closure of Runway 4/22.”

Any potential repairs stemming from those inspections are expected to be completed Saturday morning, the Port Authority said.

Watch out for wicked weather

Maybe you’d rather avoid travel and just stay home this holiday weekend. But if you live in parts of the South, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic or Northeast, your holiday could get drenched by thunderstorms.

Heavy rain and storms threaten the eastern half of the US, with flooding possible from the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic down to the Gulf Coast.

Some of the busiest airports on the East Coast could see ground stops due to thunderstorms, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Orlando International Airport and Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina.

Texas and Louisiana face the greatest risk of flooding Saturday and Sunday. Some storms could be slow-moving, which would give them plenty of time to draw deep tropical moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. And that could cause localized flash flooding, delaying both ground and air travel.

Pain at the grocery store and pump are changing Americans’ way of life

Shoppers stocking up on hot dogs, potato salad and other Memorial Day staples might have to cut back as grocery prices escalate.

(CNN) — Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced Friday that she’s resigning at the end of June, citing her husband’s diagnosis with cancer.

“Unfortunately, I must submit my resignation, effective June 30, 2026,” she wrote in a letter President Donald Trump. “My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. He faces major challenges in the coming weeks and months. At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle.”

Trump quickly praised Gabbard and announced Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Aaron Lukas will serve as acting director of national intelligence.

“Her wonderful husband, Abraham, has been recently diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer, and she, rightfully, wants to be with him, bringing him back to good health as they currently fight a tough battle together,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that Gabbard has done “an incredible job, and we will miss her.”

Over the last few weeks, White House officials heard rumors that Gabbard was planning to leave. But as of two weeks ago, she was denying she was leaving the administration, a senior administration official said.

In her letter to Trump, Gabbard said she couldn’t let her husband face the diagnosis on his own.

“Abraham has been my rock throughout our eleven years of marriage —standing steadfast through my deployment to East Africa on a Joint Special Operations mission, multiple political campaigns, and now my service in this role. His strength and love have sustained me through every challenge. I cannot in good conscience ask him to face this fight alone while I continue in this demanding and time-consuming position,” she wrote.

Gabbard’s tenure has been riddled with contradictory and confusing messaging, particularly on the US war with Iran, which at times put her at odds and out of favor with the White House.

Gabbard will be the latest Cabinet member to depart, following Trump’s recent ousters of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Gabbard, who serves in the Army Reserves, is a former Democratic congresswoman who represented Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District, making history as the first American Samoan and practicing Hindu in Congress. She ran for president as a Democrat in 2020, touting herself as an Iraq War veteran with an anti-interventionist foreign policy, before leaving the party two years later.

She went on to endorse Trump in 2024, campaigning with him and helping him prepare for his debate with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. Gabbard joined the GOP before the election and served on Trump’s transition team after he won. Read more
