Ciudadanos impulsan jornadas de limpiezas

Carolina Garcia

Georgia Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms will aim to become first Black woman governor in US history

By Fredreka Schouten, CNN

(CNN) — Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms will win the Democratic primary for Georgia governor, CNN’s Decision Desk projects, in her quest to become nation’s first Black woman elected governor.

If she wins in November, Lance Bottoms also would become the first woman and African American to serve as Georgia’s chief executive.

Bottoms, who served as Atlanta mayor between 2018 and 2022, beat out a crowded Democratic field. On the Republican side, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and health care executive Rick Jackson advanced Tuesday to a June 16 runoff for their party nomination.

The general-election battle to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Brian Kemp will offer a crucial test of Georgia’s staying power as a swing state. The Peach State narrowly backed President Joe Biden’s campaign in 2020 before swinging back to President Donald Trump four years later, but no Democrat has led the state for decades.

Bottoms served as mayor at a time when the city grappled with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, rising violence and unrest over policing practices. Bottoms, who was among the Black women Biden weighed picking as a running mate in 2020, later joined his administration as the director of the White House Office of Public Engagement.

Biden endorsed her bid for governor, calling her “battle-tested” and ready to lead the state.

She’s made expanding Medicaid coverage and increasing education funding among the key pillars of her campaign.

Thomas Massie faces the question confronting other Republicans who crossed Trump: What now?

By Jeff Zeleny, CNN

Hebron, Kentucky (CNN) — For the next seven months, Rep. Thomas Massie will hold something that even President Donald Trump can’t take away: His seat in Congress.

The question is what comes next.

As Massie becomes the latest Republican added to Trump’s growing list of revenge and retribution, his concession speech Tuesday night here in Kentucky sounded like anything but. He delivered a forward-looking message to supporters, who seemed more energized than crestfallen.

“What started out as an election turned into a movement,” Massie said. “We stirred up something. There is a yearning in this country for someone who will vote for principles over party.”

The message of optimism – and defiance – sets the stage for the next chapter of Massie’s political life. His congressional term ends in January. His loyal fans made clear they have bigger things in mind.

As someone in the crowd shouted, “Massie for president!” his supporters erupted in booming applause. For his part, Massie smiled and laughed on stage and kept delivering a speech that was interrupted again and again with loud chants of “2028!”

It’s far too early, of course, for Massie to credibly sell the idea of a presidential campaign. Such a notion stirs so many questions, perhaps starting with: In what party would he run after suffering such a convincing defeat Tuesday in his congressional primary against Ed Gallrein?

Trump heard loud and clear on Capitol Hill

Massie’s loss is the latest in a series of setbacks for Republicans who have challenged Trump.

Just this month, five Indiana state senators were unseated in primaries after refusing to redraw their state’s US House map, Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy failed to make a GOP runoff five years after voting to convict Trump during his second impeachment, and Texas Sen. John Cornyn lost a Trump endorsement to longtime rival, state Attorney General Ken Paxton, in a move that all but seals his defeat in next week’s primary runoff.

GOP Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee said Tuesday’s results showed Trump is sending a clear message: “He will beat you.”

Another lawmaker, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the Kentucky outcome freely, suggested Massie “found out the hard way” that Trump is still the party’s “kingmaker.”

“You can’t fight the President tooth and nail to try to raise your profile and get TV hits, and then slap on a red hat and cheer him on when it’s convenient for you,” the lawmaker said.

Rep. Mike Lawler just last week was confronted by GOP Sen. Rand Paul’s son at a Capitol Hill bar. According to Lawler, William Paul, who is 33, approached him and said if Massie lost his primary, it would be because “of my people,” later confirming that Paul thought he was Jewish. Lawler is Irish-Italian Catholic.

“My people have spoken,” Lawler posted on X Tuesday night. “Shalom @RepThomasMassie.”

Rand Paul, who endorsed Massie and campaign alongside him, declined to comment when approached by a reporter at the White House’s congressional picnic after the race was called in Kentucky.

‘I don’t know what I will do’

Even in defeat, Massie built a new roster of donors and energized an army of young supporters. As he ticked through a few achievements in Congress, the release of the Jeffrey Epstein investigative files drew resounding applause as he cited name after n

House Democrats condemn Texas candidate for antisemitism and accuse a PAC of boosting her

By Arit John, CNN

(CNN) — House Democratic leaders condemned efforts Tuesday by a newly registered political action committee to boost a Democratic congressional candidate who made antisemitic comments ahead of a runoff election next week.

Leaders in both parties have denounced recent remarks by Maureen Galindo, a sex therapist who won first place in March’s Democratic primary for Texas’s 35th Congressional District. In a post on her campaign Instagram last week, Galindo said that if elected, she would “turn Karnes ICE Detention Center into a prison for American Zionists and former ICE officers for human trafficking.”

She’s also been accused of repeating tropes about her rival being controlled by money from Zionists and, according to the San Antonio Current, suggested that he and anyone else “supported by Israel” should be tried for treason.

State Rep. James Talarico, the party’s nominee for US Senate, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that he wouldn’t campaign with Galindo.

“This antisemitic rhetoric has no place in our politics,” Talarico told JTA. “We need leadership in both parties willing to stand up and call out hate wherever it rears its ugly head.”

Though she’s been rejected by national Democrats, Galindo has benefitted from spending by Lead Left, a PAC that registered with the Federal Election Commission on May 6. FEC records show Lead Left has spent $428,000 in the 35th District, mostly on printing and postage.

CNN has reached out to Galindo and Lead Left for comment.

The group has also spent money to boost other Democrats viewed by the national Democratic Party as weaker general election candidates.

Punchbowl News previously reported that Lead Left PAC had links to WinRed, the primary fundraising platform used by Republican campaigns, in its website metadata.

Democratic leaders pointed to reporting from The New York Times to allege Republicans are behind Lead Left. The Times reported that “Republican fingerprints are detectable” around Lead Left, also citing ads the group has run in Nebraska “closely mirror the messaging in ads previously paid for by a nonprofit group that is linked to House Republican leadership.”

“House Republican leadership must immediately cease propping up this antisemitic candidacy, pull spending in the race and forcefully condemn these comments,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair Rep. Suzan DelBene said in a statement. “This vile language by her is disqualifying and has no place in American politics, and certainly not in the Democratic Party.”

Jeffries and DelBene said it was “beyond the pale” for Republicans to boost a “fringe candidate with antisemitic — and extremely dangerous — rhetoric and views.”

Democrats are backing Johnny Garcia, a public information officer for the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Christian Martinez said Jeffries’ candidates had “no real support from Texans.”

“Now Democrats Johnny Garcia and Maureen Galindo are tearing each other apart in a full-blown primary c
