Camarillo motorcyclist suffers major injuries after Saturday afternoon crash on Highway 101

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – A 60-year-old motorcyclist from Camarillo had major injuries after a collision with a Subaru Outback on southbound Highway 101 Saturday afternoon.

On May 16, around 3:18 p.m., dispatchers began receiving calls about a motorcycle-involved collision on southbound Highway 101, north of Victoria Avenue stated a press release from the California Highway Patrol-Ventura Area (CHP) Monday.

Arriving units found a 60-year-old Camarillo man with major injuries and that good Samaritans had provided emergency medical aid to the injured man at the scene noted the CHP.

The Camarillo motorcyclist was transported by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center for further medical treatment shared the CHP.

According to the CHP, an investigation revealed that the 60-year-old was riding a black and red Harley Davidson Dyna Super Glide southbound on Highway 101, north of Victoria Avenue when he crashed into the rear of a Subaru Outback.

The collision ejected the rider and he sustained major injuries detailed the CHP.

Drugs nor alcohol are currently suspected as being a factor in the crash, but any witnesses are asked to contact the CHP Ventura Area Office at 805-662-2640 with any additional information.

Public Input Sought for Santa Barbara Waterfront Plan

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) -  The City of Santa Barbara is looking at the long range plans for its waterfront, especially considering environmental factors that are hitting the coastlines in very apparent areas.

Waterfront Adaptation Survey looks ahead to the next 30 years. The deadline to add input is Monday, May 18th.

It will contribute to the city's plan to redesign and utilize areas including the beach, parks, paths and parking for  the long-term future of Santa Barbara’s Waterfront.

The city says coastal flooding, shoreline erosion, and sea level rise at top concerns.

It has identified areas that are showing impacts of harsh storms and high tidal overflow, especially during the winter months.

Priorities include beach access, recreation, boating, natural habitats, and essential coastal infrastructure.

There are also several area that are vital to the economy including commercial and recreational boating, restaurant and retail locations.

A draft plan is  anticipated for public release in Spring 2027. 

Funding for this project is provided by the California Coastal Commission, California Coastal Conservancy, and City of Santa Barbara.

Endangered Red-Legged Frog Making a Comeback Thanks to the Santa Barbara Zoo

SANTA BARBARA Calif. (KEYT) -  Behind the scenes at the Santa Barbara Zoo a conservation effor has been working for years to help recover the endangered red-legged frog species in California.

Recently a team brought tadpoles from a lab in Santa Barbara to the Santa Monica Mountains as part of the zoo's Headstarting program.

It is collaboration with California State University Channel Islands where the zoo is establishing programs in the future.

Egg masses were delivered and released to the frog's known habitat to help restore the population.

This will help the species survive in areas known for wildfires and violent storms.

Police responding to reports of an active shooter at Islamic Center of San Diego

At least one person was killed in what San Diego police described as an active shooter situation at the Islamic Center of San Diego in Clairemont Mesa.

(CNN) — We’ve moved our coverage of reports of an active shooter at Islamic Center of San Diego to live updates here.

The San Diego Police Department is at the Islamic Center of San Diego for a reported active shooter, the department said Monday in a post on social media.

The department urged the public to avoid the area.

Police said in an update around 12:43 p.m. PT the scene is “active but contained.”

People were seen walking away from the building, some of them holding each others’ hands and being escorted by police officers, in video shot by CNN affiliate KFMB. Dozens of police vehicles were on scene.

The center in Clairemont, a San Diego neighborhood, is the largest mosque in San Diego County, according to its website.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the “evolving situation,” his press office said on X. “We are grateful to the first responders on the scene working to protect the community and urge everyone to follow guidance from local authorities,” the post said.

Mayor Todd Gloria also said he was aware of the “active shooter situation” in a post on X.
