THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (KEYT) Nobel Prize laureate Malala Yousafrzai shared a message of hope at Cal Lutheran University during a recent visit to the Thousand Oaks campus.

The 28-year-old from Pakistan spoke to hundreds of students who filled Samuelson Chapel at a private event.

She shared her story of becoming a child education activist under Taliban's rule.

Yousafrzai survived an assassination attempt while on a school bus/

She was shot in the head.

"Speaking with Malala was like a flood of inspiration, I think, when she said to dream big and be ambitious, I took that as take more risks, so, now that I go back to my work, I'm going to be taking more risks and, you know, believing in myself in ways that I hadn't done before," said moderator, entrepreneur and alumna Andrea Brimmer.

Students had a chance to ask questions and came away feeling inspired.

"I really love that she was really emphasizing that idea of being confident with your your ability and being confident with who you are," said grad student Pia Valtierra.

Malala Yousafrzai has a  nonprofit that funds access to education for girls around the world.

OXNARD, Calif. (KEYT) Many people celebrated Mother's Day with their moms at the Channel Islands Farmers Market.

Savanna Deoliveira celebrated the day with her mother Danielle and her grandmother Patricia McKinerney.

"We went to breakfast with my grandma and my mom and the whole family.It was really nice," said Savanna of Newbury Park.

"We do it every year, we either go to the Waterside or we go to another restaurant, and then we come and walk this," said Danielle.

"I feel blessed that I have all my kids and we've all had breakfast at the brunch and then we come over here and walk around," said Mckinerney.

Others who couldn't spend time with their mothers sent cards, messages or made phone calls.

Those missing moms also found ways to honor their memories.

El Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de China confirmó la esperada visita del presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, a Beijing esta semana, donde se espera que se reúna con el líder de China, Xi Jinping.

“A invitación del presidente Xi Jinping, el presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald J. Trump, realizará una visita de Estado a China del 13 al 15 de mayo”, señaló el ministerio.

Las autoridades chinas no habían confirmado previamente la visita, aunque funcionarios estadounidenses ya habían dado a conocer detalles con anticipación.

El secretario del Tesoro, Scott Bessent, ha encabezado conversaciones preliminares con China antes de la visita de Trump y afirmó el domingo que viajará a Beijing para la cumbre Trump-Xi el miércoles.

La visita de Trump ocurre mientras las dos economías más grandes del mundo intentan resolver sus diferencias en una amplia gama de temas, desde comercio y tecnología hasta rivalidades de seguridad nacional.

Las conversaciones también se llevarán a cabo en el contexto de la guerra en Irán y el bloqueo del estrecho de Ormuz, situación que ha generado una crisis petrolera histórica y un enorme riesgo para la economía mundial.

Seis personas fueron encontradas muertas el domingo dentro de un vagón de carga de un tren de Union Pacific en Laredo, Texas, una ciudad ubicada en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México, informaron las autoridades.

El hallazgo ocurrió poco después de las 3:30 p.m. según José Espinoza, portavoz del Departamento de Policía de Laredo.

Laredo se encuentra en la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos. Union Pacific opera a través de la frontera y es la única empresa ferroviaria que da servicio a todos los puntos de acceso hacia México, según el sitio web de la compañía de transporte de carga.

Las temperaturas la tarde del domingo se encontraban entre los 32 y 35 grados Celsius aproximadamente, aunque las autoridades aún no han informado cómo murieron las personas, o si el calor fue un factor.

Hasta el momento, tampoco se ha dado a conocer la identidad de las víctimas ni su edad, género o estatus migratorio.

“Es un hecho muy lamentable”, dijo Espinoza a CNN. “Se perdieron demasiadas vidas”, añadió.

En un comunicado, Union Pacific expresó estar muy entristecida por lo ocurrido y aseguró que colabora con las autoridades en la investigación.
