(CNN) — The Trump administration has announced it is reducing its federal law enforcement presence in Minnesota and President Donald Trump suggested using a “softer touch” in carrying out his aggressive immigration crackdown, after the second fatal shooting of a US citizen by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis.

The Twin Cities has been the focal point of Trump’s crackdown since early December, when the Department of Homeland Security launched Operation Metro Surge, which saw the deployment of roughly 3,000 federal agents to Minnesota and sparked nationwide protests over federal agents’ aggressive tactics and confrontations with the public.

White House border czar Tom Homan said Wednesday that 700 federal law enforcement personnel will be withdrawn from Minnesota “effective immediately,” leaving “around 2,000” immigration officers still in the state.

Homan said the drawdown was a result of increased cooperation between Minnesota county jails and federal immigration officials. The administration’s goal is “to achieve a complete drawdown,” he said, but noted that depends on additional cooperation and an end to security threats against federal officials operating in the state.

Here’s what we know about the latest developments:

Trump signals ‘softer touch’ on immigration

President Trump told NBC News he directed the reduction in federal personnel in Minnesota and signaled the possibility of less aggressive tactics in his immigration crackdown.

“Maybe we can use a little bit of a softer touch, but you still have to be tough,” Trump said in an exclusive interview with NBC News when asked what he had learned from the escalating situation in Minneapolis in recent weeks.

The president insisted his administration will continue to target criminals and, like Homan, indicated the reduction in federal personnel was due to increased coordination between local jails and Immigration and Customs Enforcement regarding undocumented immigrants in custody.

“Give us the murderers that they’re holding, and all of the bad people, drug dealers, all of the bad people we allowed in our country,” Trump told NBC News.

Homan, who arrived in Minnesota last week in the wake of Pretti’s killing, said “an unprecedented number of counties (are) communicating with us now,” noting, “More officers taking custody of criminal aliens directly from the jails means less officers on the street doing criminal operations.”

But Homan also reiterated that immigration enforcement efforts would continue and that undocumented criminals would not be the only ones detained.

“If you’re in the country illegally, you are not off the table,” Homan had told reporters. “Let me be clear, President Trump fully intends to achieve mass deportations during this administration, and immigration enforcement actions will continue every day throughout this country.”

Homan said the administration’s goal is to eventually draw down all of the federal personnel in Minnesota as par

Elizabeth Warren launches probe into booming car repossessions

New York (CNN) — The car repo business is booming as Americans fall behind on increasingly expensive car payments.

Cars are being repossessed at the highest rate since the Great Recession of 2008 and 2009. The repo tactics have drawn the attention of Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who launched a probe into the auto lending industry on Wednesday, a Senate Banking Committee spokesperson told CNN.

The investigation is focused on illegal and mistaken repossessions, when cars are seized even if borrowers are current on their bills or have reached agreements with lenders.

Warren, a Democrat, sent letters to a dozen major industry players including Chase Auto, GM Financial, Toyota Financial Services and Ally Financial on Wednesday as part of the probe. She sought information on repo activity, error rates and practices.

“Car repossession is a devastating disruption to someone’s life – and it is inexcusable when that repossession is in error,” Warren wrote in the letters, which request responses by February 16.

Historically, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has served as a watchdog against illegal repossessions. The agency fined Wells Fargo $1.7 billion in 2022 for, among other things, allegedly illegally repossessing vehicles.

However, the Trump administration gutted the consumer watchdog and sought to shut the agency altogether this past year.

“The Trump administration has kneecapped the agency’s ability to protect consumers from auto repossession errors,” Warren wrote in her letters to the auto lending companies.

The CFPB did not respond to a request for comment. CNN reached out to the major auto lenders and trade associations addressed in Warren’s letters, including the American Recovery Association, National Independent Auto Dealers Association and American Financial Services Association. Chase declined to comment.

‘Devastating and deeply disruptive’

Car repossessions have been rising in recent years amid broader affordability concerns. Typically, borrowers prioritize making their car payments over almost all other payments because they need their cars to get to work.

“Having a car repossessed is a devastating and deeply disruptive experience,” Warren wrote to the auto companies. “Losing access to a car often means losing a paycheck.”

In 2024, 1.73 million vehicles were repossessed – the most since 2009, during the Great Recession, according to data from Cox Automotive and Experian.

Repossession data for 2025 is not available, but an executive from an industry trade group previously told CNN that repo volumes are close to Great Recession levels.

“It’s a target-rich environment at the moment,” George Badeen, who also runs Midwest Recovery and Adjustment in Detroit, said in an interview in October.

The average transaction price (ATP) on a new vehicle hit $50,000 for the first time ever last fall, according to Kelley Blue Book. The high prices partially reflect the

Mike Vrabel brought the Patriots back to the Super Bowl stage they know so well. He now has a chance to make NFL history

Santa Clara, California (CNN) — Mike Vrabel made his nnname in the NFL as a crunching outside linebacker, delivering punishment to opposing offenses and blowing up their plays on his way to winning multiple Super Bowl titles with the New England Patriots.

Now, 15 years after retiring, he’s still getting physical for the Pats – though maybe not in the way most would anticipate.

One of the defining images of this Super Bowl run for Patriots fans will be a bloodied Vrabel, grinning after a celebratory headbutt from Milton Williams after a fourth-down sack that sealed a wild-card win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Williams had just blown up the Chargers’ last-gasp comeback attempt and charged over to his head coach, getting a massive bear hug from Vrabel. Williams then instinctively delivered the prototypical football celebration – a headbutt – but completely forgot that his head coach no longer wears a helmet.

Vrabel had been telling his players they’d need to be ready to spill some blood this season. He included himself in that.

“He’s an amazing presence in our locker room, an amazing coach. Obviously, we wouldn’t be here without him,” linebacker Christian Elliss told CNN Sports. “For us, he just holds everyone to his highest standard, and he holds himself to the same standard he holds us to, and he leads by example. First and foremost, a lot of coaches in the league, they’ll talk the talk, but they won’t walk the walk. And he’s not like that.”

It’s been a slightly strange road for Vrabel to get to this point, leading his former team back to the platform to which the Patriots organization has become accustomed. If the Patriots win on Sunday, he’ll be the first person to win a Super Bowl as a player and a coach with the same organization.

His time as a Patriots player was iconic – three Super Bowls, a Pro Bowl appearance and enshrined into the team’s Hall of Fame – and the start of his NFL coaching life started with the same amount of success.

He was coach of the year in Tennessee in 2021 for the Titans, won two division titles and brought the organization to the AFC championship game in his second year in charge. Even with that success, two less-than-stellar seasons in 2022 and 2023 were all Titans leadership needed to show Vrabel the door, firing him after a 6-11 season to mild astonishment from around the league.

It was with even more astonishment that Vrabel was brought back to the Patriots. After Bill Belichick left the organization following the 2023 season, one of Vrabel’s old teammates – Jerod Mayo – became the Patriots’ new head coach and then suffered a difficult first season in charge, going 3-14. With their former star available, Robert Kraft decided to dismiss Mayo and bring Vrabel back to New England.

The cutthroat nature of that process raised eyebrows around the league. But with the Patriots going 13-4 and playing for the franchise’s seventh Super Bowl title on Sunday, it’s hard to say it wasn’t worth it.

“He’s really passionate and he’s done a really good job of just leading this team and helping us get to where we are now. Guys respect him a lot. He cares so much about us, not just as players but as human beings and I really respect him a lot for that,” rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson said.

Bonding together a young team

When he was preparing for his first draft as Patriots head coach, Vrabel made a trip down to the Bayou.
