(CNN) — One month after the US carried out an attack in Venezuela to capture its president, civilians in the South American country remain caught between uncertainty and expectations of governmental change.

Some believe the ouster of strongman leader Nicolás Maduro offers a glimmer of hope for rebuilding institutions and guaranteeing citizens’ rights. Others question whether this new phase – which the US and the government of acting President Delcy Rodríguez call a “transition” – will lead to democracy or if the change they hope for will stay on hold.

The days since the raid on Maduro’s compound have felt slow and difficult, according to one woman who saw the explosions from a distance with her boyfriend. The woman, a bioanalyst who lives in eastern Caracas and who asked to remain anonymous for security reasons, said she was still recovering from the ordeal. She doesn’t go out at night and suffers from anxiety, especially if she hears fireworks or loud noises. She said she is paying close attention to the situation in the country and waiting to see if a fundamental change is possible. “A real one,” she said.

First weeks, first actions

According to Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, at least 100 people died and 100 were wounded in the US operation that culminated in the arrest of Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, who was also a member of parliament.

Delcy Rodríguez, then vice president, assumed the role of acting president after the Supreme Court declared Maduro’s capture a forced absence – an unprecedented situation not defined in the Venezuelan Constitution. Since then, Rodríguez has insisted that the country is experiencing a new political moment and has already made several changes within the cabinet and the Bolivarian National Armed Forces. According to experts consulted by CNN, Rodríguez has made at least 28 significant changes within the armed forces.

But a month after Maduro’s capture, while some see reason for optimism in the economy and releases of political prisoners, the country remains on an uncertain path.

In Caracas, moods fluctuate between skepticism, optimism and bewilderment. The price of meat and chicken has fallen, real estate prices have risen 22%, according to economist Asdrúbal Oliveros, and airlines are beginning to return to Venezuela, including American Airlines. However, Venezuela remains on the list of countries with partial visa restrictions, and the deportation of Venezuelans continues to be a focus of the Trump administration.

The US Embassy in Caracas resumed operations with Laura Dogu as chargé d’affaires, and Venezuela appointed diplomat Félix Plasencia as its representative to Washington. Dogu made it clear on social media that her meeting with Delcy Rodríguez and her brother National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez aimed to reiterate three priorities outlined by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio: stabilization, economic recovery, and reconciliation and transition. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil said this step marks the beginning of a new era in which Venezuela is committed to upholding international law.

Some politicians, such as opposition figures Andrés Velásquez and Delsa Solórzano, have come out of hiding now that Venezuela is no longer ruled by Maduro, but at the same time they say they remain cautious, as do citizens critical of those in power.

Carlos Núñez, an administrator, remains hopeful and believes that the release of political prisoners could set a precedent in the country. He believes that many legal, economic and social issues still need to be addressed, but the releases represent a major step forward for change.

(CNN) — Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos remains committed to the publication, its top editor told CNN in an interview Wednesday, hours after the Post laid off hundreds of employees.

“He wants the Post to be a bigger, relevant, thriving institution,” executive editor Matt Murray said.

Many Post journalists doubt that, however, arguing that the institution can’t cut its way to growth. Roughly one in three employees were laid off on Wednesday, including more than 300 in the newsroom, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The severe cutbacks further intensified scrutiny of Bezos, leaving many Post journalists wondering whether he’ll sell the publication, and leading some to hope that he will.

“If Jeff Bezos is no longer willing to invest in the mission that has defined this paper for generations and serve the millions who depend on Post journalism, then The Post deserves a steward that will,” The Post Guild said in a statement.

Bezos has not commented on his current vision for the Post, but he has privately pushed management to reverse the newspaper’s annual losses, return it to profitability and find a sustainable path forward.

In a phone interview, Murray was reluctant to discuss his conversations with Bezos in detail and declined to specify when he last spoke with the owner. But he called Wednesday a “reset” day and said Bezos supports “reinvention.”

“I can say from my perspective, Jeff is nothing but supportive of getting the house in order and being positioned for growth,” Murray said.

“And he is perfect, from my perspective as head of the news department, about being an owner that does not interfere in the news mandate; doesn’t dictate anything that we do; doesn’t respond to stories; doesn’t drive coverage; and understands the needs and imperatives of what we’re trying to do with our journalism. That’s what I like in an owner.”

‘Save the Post’

Post employees — some of whom recently wrote letters to Bezos in an ill-fated bid to save their jobs — have been organizing online around the hashtag #SaveThePost.

Murray pointed out that “the first time I ever heard the words ‘save the Post,’ they were uttered by Jeff Bezos.”

That moment came at the end of 2024, when Bezos spoke on stage at The New York Times’ DealBook conference and said, “We saved The Washington Post once, and we’re going to save it a second time.”

Murray, who was officially appointed executive editor around the same time, was the main public face of Wednesday’s layoffs, leading some to wonder about publisher and CEO Will Lewis, who did not communicate with employees.

Two years ago, Bezos personally appointed Lewis to turn the Post’s fortunes around, and employees say there’s been precious little to show for it.

Murray defended Lewis in the interview: “Will has been working to create alternative sources of revenue” and “working to develop different kinds of AI and product technology. Some of that’s experimental. I can’t say it’s all worked, but also, having an experimental mindset is part of what we needed.”

Murray also said Lewis has put the Post’s digital subscription business “in a far, far better place than it was, and we are having success on that front.”

The Post shed hundreds of thousands of subscribers, though, after Bezos alienated loyal readers by nixing a planned editorial page endorsement of Kamala Harris in late 2024.

Subsequent changes to the opinion section further raised concerns that Bezos was using the Post to curry favor with President Donald Trump in ways that could benefit Amazon and Blue Origin, two businesses Bezos famously founded.

El hombre, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, se declaró inocente de los nueve cargos que se le imputan, incluido el de homicidio premeditado, durante su comparecencia inicial ante el tribunal federal el miércoles.

Una niña de 10 años del mismo distrito escolar suburbano de Minneapolis que Liam Conejo Ramos, fue liberada del Centro Residencial Familiar del Sur de Texas en Dilley, según informó un abogado que asiste a la familia.

Elizabeth Zuna Caisaguano y su madre, Rosa, fueron liberadas la tarde del martes y ahora se encuentran en un refugio en Laredo, Texas, dijo a CNN el abogado Bobby Painter este miércoles.

Aún no se ha informado cuándo regresarán la madre y la hija a Minnesota.

Elizabeth fue la primera estudiante de las Escuelas Públicas de Columbia Heights en ser detenida por agentes federales y enviada a Texas, indicó el distrito escolar.

En la mañana del 6 de enero, Elizabeth “fue llevada por agentes de ICE cuando se dirigía a una de nuestras escuelas primarias con su madre”, informaron las Escuelas Públicas de Columbia Heights.

“Durante el arresto, la niña llamó a su padre para decirle que los agentes de ICE la llevaban a la escuela. El padre acudió de inmediato a la escuela para descubrir que tanto su hija como su esposa habían sido llevadas”.

En un comunicado para CNN, el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional dijo que la madre de Elizabeth “es una inmigrante ilegal de Ecuador con una orden final de deportación —lo que significa que se le dio pleno debido proceso—”.

“Los agentes realizaron una parada de vehículo para arrestar a la inmigrante ilegal. Al descubrir que había una niña en el auto, los agentes permitieron que hiciera llamadas telefónicas para colocar a la niña bajo el cuidado de alguien que ella designara”, dijo el DHS. “Ella no logró encontrar a un adulto de confianza para el cuidado de la niña, por lo que los agentes mantuvieron a la familia unida por el bienestar de la menor”.

Painter, el abogado, dijo que la familia de Elizabeth apeló su orden de deportación poco después de que se emitiera a finales del año pasado y ha seguido todos los procedimientos adecuados, incluyendo asistir a todas las audiencias requeridas. El caso aún está en apelación, indicó Painter.

Desde la detención de Elizabeth, al menos otros cinco estudiantes de su distrito escolar también han sido llevados por agentes federales y enviados al centro de detención familiar de Dilley, según un portavoz de las Escuelas Públicas de Columbia Heights.
