US job openings are at their highest level in nearly two years

New townhouses stand near the Reservoir Park Recreation Center on April 8 in Washington

(CNN) — US businesses are brushing off those “Now Hiring” signs: Job postings rose sharply in April to their highest level in nearly two years, Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed Tuesday.

However, the latest look at labor turnover also showed that the US job market remains entrenched in a low-hire, low-fire dynamic.

The number of available jobs jumped to an estimated 7.62 million positions at the end of April, increasing from 6.89 million in March and bucking a two-month decline, the latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey showed.

More than 90% of the increase in April job openings were in the professional and business services industry, BLS data showed.

Economists were expecting that job postings would shrink for the third month in a row, falling slightly to 6.8 million from March’s initially reported estimate of 6.87 million, according to FactSet estimates.

Tuesday’s data, which could indicate a resurgence in demand for workers, could provide further reassurance that the workforce is not only stabilizing but possibly expanding.

Hiring activity – both the level of new workers and the rate of new hires as a percentage of total employment – retreated after bolting higher in March. It was a similar story for layoffs, which tumbled to a three-month low after a spike the month before.

Plus, employees are clinging tight to the jobs they have: Voluntary quits – looked to as a measure of workers’ confidence in the labor market – fell to their lowest level since the pandemic.

Quits dropped to 2.98 million in April from nearly 3.2 million the month before. The last time quits were this low was in August 2020.

The labor market churn – the inflow and outflow of workers – has slowed significantly in the past two years due to a confluence of dynamics, including the aging (and retiring) of workers, a post-pandemic hiring normalization, the emergence of new technologies, increasing economic uncertainty and sharp reductions in immigration.

Economists had cautioned that the US-Israeli war with Iran and the related oil and supply shock could suppress hiring activity in the United States.

This story is developing and will be updated.

Nordic nature is pictured during winter. The popular Finnish resort of Levi wants to encourage visitors in the summer.

By Mustafa Qadri, CNN

(CNN) — More commonly known as the home of Santa Claus and for its landscapes reminiscent of the magical world of Narnia, Lapland in Finland is inviting tourists to swap reindeer rides for a summer-long hunt for hidden gold.

Participants will explore the trails and landmarks of Levi, a resort in northern Finland, known for winter ski slopes and views of the Northern Lights, where fortune hunters will be in search of a gold bar worth 20,000 euros ($23,300).

The Midnight Sun Hunt begins on June 18 at the Levi Visitor Centre, according to a statement from Visit Levi on Tuesday.

Participants can collect their first clue and register for the hunt at the center. After, further clues will be shared, leading hikers through local trails, attractions and landmarks, each bringing them closer to the hidden prize.

The gold bar could be found after any clue, organizers said, with additional hints being released throughout the summer, gradually making the location of the gold easier to identify.

The final clue is set to be revealed on August 22.

Situated above the Arctic Circle, Levi is best known as one of Finland’s premier ski destinations and a popular winter hotspot.

During the summer months, the region experiences the midnight sun, giving Lapland 24-hour sunlight during certain periods.

Visit Levi described the summer period as a hidden gem waiting to be explored.

“Levi is known above all for its winter, but the northern summer is still undiscovered by many,” said Satu Pesonen, CEO of Visit Levi, in the statement.

“We want to give travelers a new reason to visit Levi when the sun never sets and the fell landscape reveals a completely different side of itself.”

The Levi ski resort is one of many winter season hotspots across Europe that has diversified, offering snow-free ventures like paragliding, hiking, river rafting and mountain biking.

The Midnight Sun Hunt is organized in cooperation with Agnico Eagle Finland, a gold mining company based in Kittilä, and Levi Ski Resort.

Participants keen to join are instructed to move responsibly, stay within permitted areas and respect the natural environment. The hunt does not require digging or disturbing the terrain in any way, organizers said.

Marta Kostyuk reacts after victory over Elina Svitolina in the French Open quarterfinals.

By Ben Church, CNN

(CNN) — After beating compatriot Elina Svitolina in an all-Ukrainian quarterfinal at Roland Garros 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 on Tuesday, tennis player Marta Kostyuk was overcome with emotion.

With tears rolling down her face, the 23-year-old addressed the French Open crowd after reaching the first grand slam semifinal of her career, dedicating her achievement to the people of Ukraine who continue to face an uncertain future amid the war with Russia.

“I want to start with this historical match that we played today with Elina (Svitolina),” she said.

“We had a very difficult night again in Ukraine, especially in Kyiv, so many people dead. I want to give this match to the Ukrainian people and their resilience. Thank you. Slava Ukraini.”

It was a tough match on an emotional day in Paris, with several Ukrainian flags seen waving in the stands. This was the first time in the Open Era that two Ukrainians were playing each other in the quarterfinal stage of a grand slam, made all the more poignant after another night of violence in their home country.

At least 18 people were killed in the overnight assault, including six people in Kyiv and 12 others, of which two were children, in Dnipro, according to Ukrainian officials. In total, more than 100 people were wounded.

World No. 15 Kostyuk initially got the better of her idol and won the first set, but momentum swung in the second with Svitolina leveling the match.

With the quarterfinal in a frantic deciding set, Kostyuk gathered her composure first to win in one hour and 49 minutes, becoming the first Ukrainian woman to reach the last four at Roland Garros in the Open Era.

Notably, Kostyuk will now face Russia’s Mirra Andreeva in the semifinal on Thursday.

Despite being over the moon with her success, world No. 15 Kostyuk quickly praised Svitolina for the legacy she has created both on and off the court.

Svitolina is a former world No. 3 and the most accomplished Ukrainian in WTA history. She has also continued to use her platform to raise awareness of Ukraine’s plight since the war, raising funds to help with the relief effort.

“Of course, I want to point out Elina and her incredible impact on Ukrainian tennis, on Ukrainians, on me, on everyone who is watching. She’s an incredible fighter,” Kostyuk said.
