Las preguntas sobre qué esperar del Festival de Cine de Cannes 2026 hasta ahora se han centrado principalmente en dos cosas: el vacío con forma de Hollywood en la selección oficial y “The White Lotus”.

Este año, la histórica celebración del cine que se lleva a cabo en la Riviera Francesa tendrá un aire un poco menos “Misión: Imposible”, que se estrenó en la Croisette en 2025, y será un poco más internacional, ya que directores europeos y asiáticos como Pedro Almodóvar, Nicholas Winding Refn y Ryusuke Hamaguchi ocuparán el centro del escenario.

De las 22 películas en competencia por la Palma de Oro, solo dos son de autores estadounidenses: “The Man I Love” de Ira Sachs, protagonizada por Remi Malek, y “Paper Tiger” de James Gray, con Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver y Miles Teller. (España, en cambio, tiene por primera vez tres cintas en competencia: “Amarga Navidad”, de Pedro Almodóvar; “El ser querido”, de Rodrigo Sorogoyen; y “La bola negra”, de Javier Calvo y Javier Ambrossi).

Pero la noche de apertura del festival demostró que la alfombra roja no tendrá ese mismo vacío con forma de Hollywood. La moda ya es tan deslumbrante como siempre, con la miembro del jurado Demi Moore, junto con las actrices Jane Fonda y Maika Monroe, todas llegando a la noche de apertura cubiertas de lentejuelas.

Paralelamente a las actividades del festival, se está filmando la cuarta temporada de “The White Lotus”, la serie de HBO del guionista y actor Mike White que satiriza la vida de los ultrarricos; y que esta vez se desarrolla en el Festival de Cine de Cannes. (CNN) — The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced Wednesday that it is placing a six-month moratorium on new enrollment of health providers in Medicare — its latest effort to combat what it says is widespread fraud among hospice and home health providers.

“We’ve seen systemic and deeply troubling fraud in the hospice and home health space, with bad actors exploiting some of our most vulnerable Medicare patients and stealing money from the American taxpayer,” CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said in a statement.

“Today we’re shutting the door on fraud—preventing new bad actors from entering Medicare while we aggressively identify, investigate, and remove those already exploiting them.”

Oz, who is working with Vice President JD Vance’s Anti-Fraud Task Force, has made combatting fraud a top priority. The two are set to make a fraud-related announcement on Wednesday afternoon.

Vance is also traveling to Maine on Thursday to discuss the administration’s anti-fraud efforts, which have targeted the state. President Donald Trump referenced Maine as a hotbed of fraud in his State of the Union address in February.

Maine’s Senate race, where GOP Sen. Susan Collins is running for a sixth term, is expected to be among the most competitive of the November midterm election.

In addition to pausing Medicaid payments to Minnesota earlier this year, Oz has filmed videos and sent letters to governors seeking information and demanding they craft plans to improve the integrity of their programs and revalidate providers.

In February, Oz sent a letter to Maine Gov. Janet Mills, a Democrat, citing concerns about the state’s Medicaid-funded treatment program for children with autism and demanding information about what the state is doing to identify and prevent fraud, as well as to recover stolen or misspent funds. Mills called the effort a “political attack.”

CMS also placed a similar six-month nationwide moratorium on certain companies that provide durable medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, hospital beds and oxygen equipment — an industry it says is also rife with fraud.

The administrator has focused his hospice anti-fraud efforts in the Los Angeles area. CMS says it has suspended $70 million payments to 773 hospices and 23 home health agencies suspected of fraud in the city.

CMS has also revoked or deactivated hundreds of hospices and home health agencies it says engaged in fraud or improper activity; increased oversight of new hospice providers in Arizona, California, Georgia, Ohio, Nevada and Texas; expanded reviews of home health agency claims in Florida, Illinois, Oklahoma, Ohio, North Carolina and Texas; and conducted hospice site visits.

However, the new moratorium could hurt legitimate providers of hospice services and limit patients’ access to care, the National Alliance for Care at Home said in a statement.

“An enrollment moratorium raises serious access-to-care concerns in areas where patient demand is growing or existing capacity is already strained, leading to longer wait times, reduced service availability, and fewer choices for patients – particularly in rural or underserved communities,” the alliance said.

Moscow (CNN) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that what he called the world’s most powerful missile system — dubbed “Satan II” by NATO — will be ready for “combat duty” by the end of the year after a successful test on Tuesday.

The Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile has an expected range over 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles) and can reportedly carry up to 16 independently targeted nuclear warheads, according to the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, a US-based nonprofit. Putin claims the range extends to more than 35,000 kilometers (21,750 miles).

“The combined yield of the payload is more than four times greater than that of any existing Western counterpart,” Putin said.

By comparison, the United States’ LGM-30 Minuteman ICBM has a range of about 11,000 kilometers (6,835 miles) and is deployed with only one warhead, though it was designed to carry three.

Russian state television broadcast footage of Sergei Karakayev, commander of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces, reporting to Putin on what he described as a “successful” test launch.

According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the silo-launched Sarmat is the long-awaited replacement for Russia’s SS-18 ICBM, which was first deployed under Soviet rule in the 1970s and codenamed “Satan” by NATO.

The RS-28 Sarmat, which the alliance calls Satan II, has been in development since 2011 and has faced difficulties in testing, delaying its original deployment plan for 2018, the CSIS says.

After a failed test in September 2024, satellite images showed a crater about 200 feet wide at the launch site at Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the northwestern Arkhangelsk region in Russia.

Russian telegram channel Astra — labeled a foreign agent by authorities — injected a note of skepticism, pointing out that Putin has spoken about the nuclear-capable missile’s imminent readiness at least 10 times since 2021.

The Sarmat missile is liquid-fueled, reports say, meaning it has to be fueled shortly before launching, a disadvantage compared with solid-fueled missiles.

Russia maintains the world’s largest inventory of nuclear warheads, with more than 5,500, according to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. The US has just over 5,000 warheads, the organization says.

The timing of the Sarmat test is noteworthy, coming shortly after a muted Victory Day Parade on May 9.

The parade which commemorates the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Nazi Germany in World War II, was the most scaled down since 2008, when Putin made it an annual event. No military hardware was displayed for the first time in nearly 20 years. Russian authorities pared down the event amid security concerns following Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russian territory, especially on oil refineries.

La presidenta de México, Claudia Sheinbaum, llamó “falso” el reporte que CNN publicó el martes sobre las crecientes operaciones de la CIA en territorio mexicano, en las cuales, según múltiples fuentes, agentes han participado en operaciones selectivas para matar a líderes criminales.

Durante su conferencia de prensa de este miércoles, Sheinbaum dijo que la historia es “realmente sensacionalista” y acusó un intento por “dañar” a su Gobierno.

“El objetivo, decía, es ‘la presidenta no está diciendo la verdad, sí hay agentes de la CIA operando en territorio nacional’. Falso. Solamente son los que están acreditados del Gobierno de los Estados Unidos para realizar tareas que están perfectamente determinadas por la Ley de Seguridad Nacional”, señaló.

En abril, sin embargo, Sheinbaum comenzó una batalla política con el Gobierno del estado de Chihuahua, ubicado en el norte de México, después de que se dio a conocer que agentes de Estados Unidos en el lugar participaron en una operación para desmantelar laboratorios clandestinos para fabricar drogas. Sheinbaum dijo entonces que su Gobierno no había sido informado sobre la presencia de estos agentes.

CNN reportó el martes que, según múltiples fuentes, la CIA está incrementando sus operaciones en territorio mexicano, incluyendo su participación en asesinatos selectivos de líderes criminales.

Uno de ellos, de acuerdo con las fuentes, fue el de Francisco Beltrán, alias “el Payín”, un operador del Cartel de Sinaloa que murió junto con otro hombre cuando explotó el vehículo en el que viajaba el 28 de marzo en una transitada carretera.
