(CNN) — Indian magnate Anant Ambani, son of billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has offered to take in at his wildlife sanctuary in India, 80 “cocaine hippos” currently living in Colombia, where the government is planning to cull them.

The hippos are descended from animals introduced to the country in the 1980s by Pablo Escobar, one of Colombia’s top drug lords, who sought to have one of the largest private zoos in Latin America with a wide variety of animals.

Since then, their population has exploded to around 160 individuals and their presence is now endangering native species. A few weeks ago, Colombia said it planned to cull 80 of these animals, sparking debate.

Ambani asked the Colombian government to reconsider the decision, proposing to house them at his rescue center.

“These 80 hippos did not choose where to be born, nor did they create the circumstances they now face,” he said in a social media post. These animals “are living, sentient beings, and if we have the capacity to save them through a safe and humane solution, we have the responsibility to try.”

The proposal

In the city of Jamnagar, in the state of Gujarat, Ambani founded the conservation center Vantara, which houses more than 150,000 animals from over 2,000 wildlife species, according to its official website.

This is where he proposes to relocate 80 of the Colombian hippos, which currently live around Hacienda Nápoles, a rural estate located in Puerto Triunfo, Antioquia department, that once belonged to Escobar and is now used for tourism activities.

“We are willing to receive and care for these hippos in a specially designed and enriched environment, conceived to guarantee their well-being and, at the same time, reflect the key characteristics of their current habitat,” says a statement published Monday signed by Vantara’s CEO, Vivaan Karani, on behalf of Ambani.

In the letter, addressed to Colombia’s Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Irene Vélez Torres, Vantara executives make a call to “respectfully appeal” the Colombian government’s decision.

CNN contacted Vantara authorities for more details about the proposal.

If the Colombian government approves the request, it would be carried out “in strict accordance with the necessary approvals, permits, due diligence processes, biosecurity requirements, and logistical planning,” Karani explained in the statement, offering “lifetime” care for the animals under the principle of “causing no harm to any living being.”

CNN reached out to Colombia’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and Minister Vélez regarding the reception of the proposal and its feasibility and is awaiting a response.

Vantara authorities said they are “fully available” to engage in dialogue with the Colombian government to analyze the initiative and expressed their intention to meet with officials from President Gustavo Petro’s administration, to whom they extended an invitation to visit the rescue center’s facilities.

Ambani, founder of Vantara and son of the chairman and CEO of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), considered the largest private corporation in India, claims to be an animal lover. “In animals I see God, and Vantara is a temple,” he says. He made international news in 2024 when he married Radhika Merchant, in a wedding preceded by lavish celebrations that lasted for months.

(CNN) — Grab your sunscreen and your best poolside fashion: Laura Dern is heading to “The White Lotus,” a move that amounts to the ultimate phone-a-friend flex.

The Oscar-winning actress is checking into Season 4 of the acclaimed HBO show following the sudden departure of actress Helena Bonham Carter last week. The streamer confirmed the new casting to CNN on Tuesday. (HBO and CNN are owned by the same parent company.)

There are few details yet about her role on the show, but expectations will be high as she dives into the world of the luxurious White Lotus hotel chain and the sometimes deadly antics of its spoiled guests and exasperated staff. The latest season is already in production in the south of France, with much of the action due to take place during the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

HBO said last week that Bonham Carter left when it became clear during filming that the character written for her “did not align once on set.” Bonham Carter’s representatives had no additional comment when reached by CNN.

Now, Dern will reunite with her longtime collaborator Mike White, the mastermind creator of “The White Lotus.”

Over a decade ago, the two worked together to create and act in the cult HBO series “Enlightened,” where they established the blueprint for difficult-to-like characters nonetheless winning the hearts and minds of the audience — something White would carry to “The White Lotus.”

In “Enlightened,” Dern played Amy Jellicoe, a somewhat deluded professional who suffers a mental break at work and tries to mend fences after a spiritual retreat. The show ran for two seasons beginning in 2011 and was nominated for two Emmys. Even before that, the pair worked together on the 2007 film “Year of the Dog.”

“She’s definitely unlike most actresses I’ve worked with in the sense that she’s not consumed with the likeability of the character,” Mike White said of Dern in an interview with Kate Aurthur for BuzzFeed in 2013. “In fact, she wants to play the edges and is completely fearless about being unpleasant or unappealing in moments.”

If anyone knows unlikeable characters, it’s White. From Jennifer Coolidge parading around and cringing it up in Hawaii and Sicily in Seasons 1 and 2 to Jason Isaacs creating an entitled finance bro in hot water in Season 3, White has managed to make the rich and obnoxious guests at the “Lotus” endlessly fascinating, and sometimes even a little sympathetic.

Another of White’s signature touches is his habit of repeatedly working with favorite actors. Molly Shannon, who appeared in several episodes of the first season of “The White Lotus” and had an Emmy-nominated role in “Enlightened,” was featured in a starring role in “Year of the Dog,” which White directed.

This won’t even be Dern’s first appearance on “The White Lotus” — technically.

In Season 2, the star provided her voice for an uncredited phone cameo as Dominic Di Grasso’s (Michael Imperioli) enraged wife Abby. She told Jimmy Kimmel about recording the role back in 2023. “It was amazing and I just loved doing it,” she said at the time, adding that she and White were “old friends.”

La Fiscalía de Chihuahua, en el norte de México, presentó este lunes un primer informe sobre las investigaciones realizadas luego de la controversia que ha generado la presencia en el estado de dos agentes de la Agencia Central de Inteligencia de Estados Unidos (CIA, por sus siglas en inglés) que murieron el domingo 19 de abril en un accidente automovilístico, cuando regresaban de un operativo en el que autoridades mexicanas desmantelaron laboratorios clandestinos para fabricar drogas.

Estas indagatorias están a cargo de una unidad especial que la gobernadora de Chihuahua, María Eugenia Campos, ordenó crear el viernes con el objetivo de aclarar qué sucedió, qué hacían los agentes en México y si su presencia pudo haber violado alguna ley o la soberanía del país.

Las investigaciones de la Fiscalía de Chihuahua son independientes de las que la Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) lleva a cabo en el ámbito federal por el mismo caso, que ha generado tensiones entre el Gobierno de la presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum, la propia Campos y el Gobierno de Estados Unidos.

La fiscal Wendy Chávez, titular de la unidad especial, dijo este lunes en un mensaje a medios que los preparativos para ejecutar el operativo contra los laboratorios de drogas comenzaron el jueves 16 de abril. Ese día, agregó, un convoy con unos 40 funcionarios de la Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI) partió de Chihuahua capital hacia el cuartel militar de la localidad de Guachochi, ubicado a unos 300 kilómetros.

De acuerdo con la fiscal, las primeras indagatorias, basadas en testimonios e informes periciales, indican que desde ese momento se unieron al grupo cuatro personas ajenas a la Fiscalía de Chihuahua. Dos de ellas eran los agentes de la CIA que murieron en el accidente del domingo. La fiscal no dio detalles sobre quiénes eran las otras dos.

Consultada por CNN, la Fiscalía dijo este martes que presumiblemente también se trataba de ciudadanos estadounidenses.

De acuerdo con la fiscal, los testimonios recabados coinciden en que estas personas vestían de civil, no portaban insignias que los identificaran como parte de alguna corporación de seguridad, no llevaban armas y trajeron el rostro cubierto “la mayor parte del tiempo”. Su trato directo era con el director de la AEI, Pedro Ramón Oseguera Cervantes.

Una vez que el convoy llegó a Guachochi, según el recuento de la fiscal, el director de la AEI se reunió con el mando militar, posiblemente para afinar aspectos del operativo contra los laboratorios.

No se tiene registro de que los agentes de la CIA o las otras personas ajenas a la Fiscalía participaran en ese encuentro, agregó la fiscal.

Tras esa reunión, los funcionarios de la Fiscalía y unos 50 soldados salieron hacia el poblado de Polanco, al que llegaron por la noche.

Durante la madrugada del viernes 17 de abril, todos partieron hacia la localidad de El Pinal, en el municipio de Morelos. Al día siguiente, por la mañana, comenzaron operaciones de rastreo a pie y localizaron los laboratorios. Después, se notificó a mandos tanto de la Fiscalía de Chihuahua como a representantes de la FGR y, por la tarde, comenzó el viaje de regreso.

“Hasta este momento, no existe ningún indicio que permita suponer que durante el operativo las personas de origen extranjero se presentaron, ostentaron o actuaron como integrantes o agentes de alguna institución o agencia de seguridad nacional o extranjera”, dijo la fiscal este lunes.

Un batallón de las Fuerzas Armadas de Israel que agredió y detuvo a un equipo de CNN en la Ribera Occidental ocupada fue reubicado tras una suspensión de un mes, dijo a CNN una fuente de seguridad israelí.

La unidad de reserva, que opera bajo el batallón ultraortodoxo “Netzah Yehuda”, participó en un seminario educativo y entrenamiento adicional, señaló la fuente. Según la radio del Ejército de Israel, se espera que la unidad retome plenamente sus actividades operativas en los próximos días.

El 30 de marzo, soldados del batallón detuvieron a un equipo de CNN que cubría la violencia de colonos en la aldea de Tayasir, en la Ribera Occidental. Un soldado sometió al fotoperiodista Cyril Theophilos con una llave en el cuello, lo derribó al suelo y dañó su cámara. El jefe del Estado Mayor de las Fuerzas de Defensa de Israel (FDI), teniente general Eyal Zamir, tomó medidas disciplinarias que parecieron sin precedentes al suspender la unidad en un plazo de 48 horas.

Un funcionario militar dijo a CNN que la agresión contra Theophilos sería investigada por la policía militar de Israel. Las FDI calificaron el incidente como una “grave falla ética y profesional”. El Ejército había indicado que realizaría entrenamientos “destinados a reforzar sus fundamentos profesionales y éticos” y que el Comando Central de Israel, que supervisa las operaciones militares en la Ribera Occidental, decidiría cuándo podrían volver al servicio.

Mientras tanto, el Departamento de Investigaciones Internas de la policía de Israel, un organismo independiente dentro de la institución, investiga un incidente anterior en el que un agente le fracturó la muñeca a la productora sénior de CNN Abeer Salman. El 17 de marzo, Salman estaba entre un grupo de periodistas que cubrían las oraciones del Ramadán fuera de la Puerta de los Leones de la Ciudad Vieja de Jerusalén. Fieles musulmanes, impedidos de rezar en la mezquita de Al-Aqsa por restricciones en tiempos de guerra, se habían reunido fuera de las murallas de la Ciudad Vieja para orar.

La policía trasladó a los fieles a otro lugar cercano a las murallas cuando los agentes lanzaron granadas aturdidoras contra el grupo. Dos periodistas fueron detenidos en el lugar mientras agentes los agredían y dañaban su equipo. Tras su liberación, la policía ordenó a los periodistas retroceder. Imágenes del lugar muestran al grupo obedeciendo las instrucciones policiales cuando un agente de civil tomó la mano de Salman, la torció y le causó una fractura en la muñeca.

En respuesta a una serie de preguntas sobre el incidente y si hubo acciones posteriores, la policía de Israel emitió inicialmente la misma declaración que antes, que la Unión de Periodistas en Israel calificó de “fácticamente incorrecta”. El comunicado afirmaba que los periodistas “se negaron a cumplir las instrucciones policiales” y no se identificaron como prensa. La conducta, según el texto, “generó sospechas entre los agentes” y el equipo de cámara “parecía destinado a provocar”.

La policía no respondió a una lista de preguntas de CNN, incluidas cuáles instrucciones no se cumplieron, qué conducta fue considerada sospechosa y por qué poseer una cámara se considera provocador.
