Dos agentes mexicanos y dos instructores de la Embajada de Estados Unidos en México murieron este domingo en un accidente automovilístico en Chihuahua, en el norte del país, tras participar en un operativo contra un laboratorio clandestino de drogas, informaron autoridades.

Las víctimas formaban parte de la Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI) de Chihuahua y de un programa de capacitación con la embajada estadounidense, informó el fiscal general del estado, César Jáuregui Moreno. Entre los fallecidos se encuentran el director regional de la AEI, Pedro Ramón Oseguera Cervantes, y su escolta, Manuel Genaro Méndez Montes, así como dos instructores de la Embajada de Estados Unidos en México.

El accidente ocurrió en la carretera Chihuahua–Ciudad Juárez, cuando los funcionarios regresaban de un operativo en el municipio de Morelos, donde autoridades estatales desmantelaron un laboratorio de procesamiento de drogas, de acuerdo con los primeros reportes oficiales.

Jáuregui Moreno confirmó que los dos instructores estadounidenses participaban en labores de entrenamiento como parte de un intercambio regular de cooperación en materia de seguridad. “Fallecieron lamentablemente también dos funcionarios instructores de la embajada de EE.UU., que se encontraban realizando labores de entrenamiento”, dijo.

El embajador de Estados Unidos en México, Ronald Johnson, en un mensaje en X, lamentó las muertes y afirmó que las víctimas habían dedicado sus esfuerzos a enfrentar “uno de los mayores desafíos de nuestro tiempo”.

“Esta tragedia es un solemne recordatorio de los riesgos que enfrentan los funcionarios mexicanos y estadounidenses dedicados a proteger a nuestras comunidades, y fortalece nuestra determinación de continuar su misión y avanzar en nuestro compromiso compartido con la seguridad y la justicia, para proteger a nuestra gente”, añadió.

El accidente se produce en el contexto de la cooperación bilateral entre México y Estados Unidos en materia de seguridad, que incluye operativos conjuntos contra el narcotráfico en regiones con fuerte presencia del crimen organizado como Chihuahua. Las autoridades no han detallado aún las causas del accidente.

(CNN) — Michigan’s attorney general is rejecting an effort by the US Justice Department to obtain ballots and other voting materials from the Detroit area, a target of the Trump administration’s efforts to probe elections in states that the president falsely claims he won in 2020.

Harmeet Dhillon, the DOJ’s assistant attorney general for civil rights, sent a letter to the clerk who oversees elections in Wayne County, Michigan’s most populous, on Tuesday, requesting she turn over all ballots, ballot receipts and ballot envelopes from the 2024 election within two weeks.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel responded on Friday, calling President Donald Trump and his allies’ claims of widespread voter fraud “baseless” and warning that state leaders stand “ready to defend against these claims and any attempt to interfere in Michigan’s elections.”

Federal prosecutors want to ensure that ballots from the last presidential election are legally valid because of Wayne County’s “history,” Dhillon explains.

However, several of her allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 election stem from a Michigan case that courts repeatedly rejected, citing a lack of credibility in the plaintiffs’ claims about operations at Detroit’s downtown ballot-counting center — an epicenter of conspiracy theories.

Nessel emphasized that federal, state and local officials have repeatedly found no evidence of widespread voter fraud in Michigan, calling the few cases that her office prosecuted related to the 2020 election “infinitesimal” compared to the total number of voters in Wayne County.

In her letter to Dhillon, Nessel repudiated the basis of DOJ’s efforts, arguing that “speculative evidence of election fraud” does not meet the standard required to compel states to turnover ballots and that it is too broad in scope.

CNN has reached out to the Justice Department about Nessel’s letter.

Michigan’s elections are largely administered by local clerks who report voting data to the county. Nessel contends that the 43 clerks throughout Wayne County who retain ballots from 2024 should not have to respond to a request related to allegations outside of their jurisdiction.

“Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy,” Nessel wrote, vowing to do everything in her power to protect the “fundamental right to vote” in Michigan.

Michigan is just the latest state that the Trump administration has focused in on in its efforts to probe old ballots from battleground states, sparking concerns about how far they will go in policing future elections.

The FBI seized 2020 ballots from a Fulton County, Georgia elections center in January, years after Trump pressured then-Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” the votes to overturn his loss to Joe Biden in that state.

In the ensuing legal battle, a lawyer for Fulton County warned a federal judge last month that if he did not scrutinize the criminal search warrant used to obtain 2020 Atlanta-area election records, it could embolden the Trump administration to seize ballots in the midst of an election in the future.

The president has already suggested that the federal government could get “involved” in counting votes if he doesn’t believe states are doing their constitutional duty of administering elections adequately.

Ocho menores murieron por disparos en tres viviendas del sur de Shreveport, Louisiana, la madrugada del domingo, en lo que las autoridades califican como un disturbio doméstico. Las víctimas tenían entre 1 y 14 años.

Dos mujeres adultas y un adolescente también resultaron heridos en los tiroteos, dijo la policía. Las mujeres están en estado crítico, dijo el alcalde de Shreveport, Tom Arceneaux, y el adolescente tiene lesiones que no ponen en peligro su vida.

“Estremece a toda la ciudad”, dijo Arceneaux. “Nos afecta a todos”.

El sospechoso robó un vehículo y llevó a la policía a una persecución hacia la parroquia vecina, según Bordelon.

“El vehículo fue perseguido hasta la parroquia de Bossier, y en ese momento, agentes de la policía de Shreveport sí efectuaron disparos con su arma de fuego, y ese individuo está muerto”, aseguró.

(CNN) — Eight children were shot and killed across three homes in south Shreveport, Louisiana, early Sunday in what authorities are calling a domestic disturbance. The victims ranged in age from 1 to 14.

Two adult women and one teenager were also wounded in the shootings, police said. The women are in critical condition, the Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux said, and the teenager has non-life threatening injuries.

“It rattles the entire city,” Arceneaux said. “It affects us all.”

Police chased the person responsible for the shooting and exchanged gunfire, Arceneaux said.

Shreveport police Cpl. Chris Bordelon said the suspect died after being shot by officers.

Investigators believe the person is related to at least some of the victims. The mayor said it’s believed the suspect had a relationship with one or both of the women, but it’s not clear.

Police responded to reports of shots fired in the Cedar Grove community of Shreveport just after 6 a.m. CT and found victims in two homes along West 79th Street and a third home on nearby Harrison Street, Bordelon said.

“This is a very large scene with multiple deceased children present,” Bordelon said.

There have been at least 114 mass shootings in the United States so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which like CNN defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people are shot, not including the shooter.

The suspect carjacked a vehicle and led police on a chase into the next parish, Bordelon said.

“The vehicle was chased into Bossier Parish, and at which point in time, Shreveport police officers did discharge their firearm, and that individual is deceased,” he said.

The Louisiana State Police are investigating the officer-involved shooting.

“Investigators are working to process the scene and gather further information,” state police said in a statement. No officers were injured, state police said.

“This is a tragic situation, maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had in Shreveport,” Arceneaux said.

“I just don’t know what to say, you know? My heart is just taken aback. I just cannot begin to imagine how such an event can occur,” Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith said.

US House Speaker Mike Johnson, who represents the Shreveport area in Congress, called the killings “heartbreaking.”

“We’re holding the victims, their families and loved ones, and our Shreveport community close in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” Johnson said.

Police have not released the names of the victims or the suspected shooter.

Superintendent Keith Burton of Shreveport’s Caddo Parish Public Schools said the community “must take care of our children, support our families, and stand beside our educators and first responders who are carrying the weight of this moment.”
