New York (CNN) — QVC, the home shopping TV network that has been a staple for almost four decades, has filed for bankruptcy.

The channel’s parent company, QVC Group, announced Thursday that it has voluntarily entered Chapter 11 proceedings in an effort to slash its debt from $6.6 billion to $1.3 billion.

Based in West Chester, Pennsylvania, the network sells everything from kitchen appliances to a Martha Stewart clothing collection. However, it has struggled in recent years from a surge in online shopping and live-streaming apps, like TikTok and Whatnot; as well as President Donald Trump’s tariffs and the decline of viewership on cable television.

CEO David Rawlinson said in a press release the “process will allow for QVC Group to have the financial structure it needs to accelerate our return to growth.”

The company has sufficient money to keep operating as it navigates the bankruptcy proceedings, and expects to complete the process within 90 days. No layoffs or furloughs are planned and vendors will be paid.

QVC, which stands for Quality, Value, Convenience, started in 1986, helping pioneer the live-shopping format. In 2017, QVC bought its older rival, Home Shopping Network (HSN), and merged the operations. Together, they operate nearly a dozen TV channels and a website.

In the release, QVC touts its digital growth with its streaming channels and said it has become a top seller on TikTok.

“A stronger balance sheet, together with revenue growth from social and streaming, is expected to enable QVC Group to stabilize and return to sustainable growth over time,” the company said.

Shares of QVC Group (QVCGA) fell nearly 70% on Thursday.

CEO of blacklisted Anthropic is going to the White House

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is visiting the White House on April 17 for a high-stakes meeting with the president’s top adviser

(CNN) — Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is visiting the White House on Friday for a high-stakes meeting with the president’s top adviser, while his AI company battles the Trump administration in court for blacklisting its Claude AI model.

Amodei will meet with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, two sources familiar with the meeting told CNN. Axios first reported on the meeting. Anthropic declined to comment.

Until recently, Anthropic’s Claude was the only AI model available in the Pentagon’s classified network. But President Donald Trump recently announced the administration would sever ties with the company after Anthropic refused to back down on terms that would allow the military to use Claude for “all lawful purposes,” including autonomous weapons and mass surveillance.

After a breakdown in talks over Claude’s use, the Pentagon went on to declare Anthropic a “supply chain risk,” a label only used in the past for companies associated with foreign adversaries. It would effectively blacklist Anthropic from the government.

Anthropic sued the Trump administration in response, and a federal judge in California last month blocked the Pentagon’s effort to “punish” Anthropic. The government said it will appeal the ruling.

The Pentagon has said it wants unfettered access to Claude for “all lawful purposes,” because it needs complete freedom to use those tools, especially in wartime. Anthropic has argued that AI models are just not yet reliable enough to be used in autonomous weapons, and that US law has not caught up to be able to protect Americans around AI’s use in mass surveillance.

Meanwhile, Anthropic announced a forthcoming powerful AI model called Mythos, that it and experts have warned could be a “watershed” moment for cybersecurity, allowing select groups to get early access to assess their cybersecurity risk.

The Office of Management and Budget has already told agencies it is preparing to give them access to Mythos to prepare, Bloomberg reported. Axios reported the White House is also in discussion to gain access to Mythos. Anthropic declined to comment on whether the Trump administration was working to test Mythos.

“The White House continues to proactively engage across government and industry to protect the United States and Americans. This includes working with frontier AI labs to ensure their models help secure critical software vulnerabilities,” a White House official told CNN. “Any new technology that would potentially be used or deployed by the federal government requires a technical period of evaluation for fidelity and security. The collective effort of all involved will ultimately benefit industry, and our country, as a whole.”

Notre Dame and Villanova hoops teams set to visit the Pope in Rome next season

(CNN) — The Villanova and Notre Dame men’s and women’s basketball teams will be taking a Roman holiday next season.

In a nod to the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American Pope and a Villanova graduate, the two Catholic universities will officially announce today a doubleheader to be played in Rome on November 1, a source tells CNN Sports.

The men’s game will be played at 9:30 a.m. ET and aired on Fox, and the women’s game will tip off at noon ET on FS1. The site of the games has yet to be finalized.

The two schools have been talking about the historic event for months, as a way to celebrate both their Catholic missions and Pope Leo XIV. The Wildcats and Fighting Irish teams are expected to enjoy an audience with the Pope in advance of the games as well as celebrate a shared Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica.

A native of Chicago, Pope Leo, then known as Robert Prevost, graduated from Villanova in 1977 with a degree in mathematics.

He joined the Order of Saint Augustine – Villanova and Merrimack are the only two Augustinian universities in the US – before embarking on missionary work in Peru.

Upon Pope Leo’s election in May 2025, Villanova students and faculty flocked to the on-campus chapel as the church bells rang out across the Philadelphia campus.

The historic event even brought a number of the priests on campus out to reminisce on their own personal stories about their connections with the man they once knew as “Bob.’’

Now, “Bob” will be welcoming his Wildcats and the Irish to his new neighborhood.
