(CNN) — One person has died in connection with a cluster of Legionnaires’ disease cases in New York City, Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin said Friday.

As of Thursday night, 67 cases have been reported, and 12 people are hospitalized. Forty-three others were previously hospitalized but have been discharged.

Martin said officials will not be releasing any further information on the person who died.

Officials believe that the cases are connected with bacteria found in building cooling towers on the Upper East Side. Towers for 76 buildings tested positive for Legionella bacteria, and their owners were ordered to drain, clean and disinfect them.

“All have confirmed that they completed the required remediation,” Martin said in a statement.

Last year, a community cluster of cases in Harlem sent 92 people to the hospital and killed seven. Those cases were connected to cooling towers, prompting the city to enact a law in May that requires more frequent inspections of the equipment and increased fines for property owners that failed to comply.

Cooling towers, used for refrigeration and general building cooling, expel building heat into the atmosphere by pulling outside air through warm water from a central chiller that gets sprayed over a fill material. As fans pull air through the water, a small amount evaporates, cooling the remaining water, which recirculates to take up more heat. People can get sick when they are exposed to vapor from those systems if there’s bacteria in it.

Studies show that cooling towers and other warm, wet environments like hot tubs, spas, fountains and some plumbing systems are particularly vulnerable to Legionella bacteria.

Public health officials noted that this particular cluster of cases is not connected to drinking water, showers or air conditioners.

New York sees hundreds of Legionnaires’ cases every year, but officials have noticed a spike in cases clustered in three particular ZIP codes: 10128, 10028 and 10075. Anyone who has been in that area in the past couple of weeks is advised to watch for symptoms such as fever, chills, fatigue, headaches, low appetite, confusion and diarrhea.

Legionnaires’ disease is not contagious, and it can be managed if people are given antibiotics early in the course of the disease.

Most people who are exposed to Legionella bacteria don’t get sick at all, but people can get sick after high or repeated exposure, especially in vulnerable groups that can include people who are over 50, who vape or smoke, or who have weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions like diabetes or heart, kidney, liver or lung disease.

There is no vaccine or medicine to prevent it, and masks don’t seem to offer protection, the New York health department said.

Normalmente, una afirmación como la que el presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, lanzó contra China en horario estelar esta semana podría presagiar una gran ruptura en los lazos con Beijing.

“La República Popular China llevó a cabo lo que se cree que es la mayor vulneración de datos electorales de la historia”, declaró Trump el jueves desde la Sala Este, visiblemente dolido porque, según una opinión minoritaria de inteligencia, el país habría intentado socavar sus posibilidades electorales en 2020.

“El Gobierno chino quería que el presidente de Estados Unidos perdiera la próxima elección”, afirmó. “La razón por la que querían que yo perdiera es porque sabían que yo era astuto con ellos, les impuse miles de millones de dólares en aranceles y construí las Fuerzas Armadas más fuertes del mundo”.

Las afirmaciones eran graves —aunque no eran nuevas ni estaban totalmente respaldadas por pruebas— y provocaron una indignación inmediata entre los funcionarios chinos. Sin embargo, en el discurso de Trump no hubo ninguna sugerencia de que planeara castigar al Gobierno chino por sus presuntas acciones.

Encargó a cuatro agencias federales distintas que investigaran, con instrucciones de “despedir a los involucrados en el encubrimiento y presentar cargos penales, si corresponde, contra estas personas”.

La diferencia de enfoque dejó al descubierto la fijación de Trump con reabrir la disputa por la elección de 2020, que perdió frente a Joe Biden. Pero también evidenció que tiene poco interés en alterar lo que se ha convertido en un frágil equilibrio con Xi tras un primer año complicado de regreso en el poder.

En cierto modo, el discurso de Trump del jueves marcó un cambio respecto del tono que ha adoptado en los últimos meses hacia China y su líder, con quien ha trabajado para cultivar lazos personales a lo largo de varias reuniones cara a cara.

“Soy un gran admirador del presidente Xi”, dijo Trump en la cumbre de la OTAN de la semana pasada en Turquía, al elogiar al país por mantenerse en gran medida al margen de la guerra con Irán, pese a los temores iniciales de que Beijing pudiera proporcionar asistencia militar a Teherán.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) - Tibetan and Thai Buddhist monks are creating a colorful sand mandala over the next four days at the Community Arts Workshop.

The public is invited to watch the artwork come together and even take part by placing grains of colored sand.

“My message is … no war … more peace in the world … I’m hoping ... for peace in the world," said Tibetan Buddhist Monk Kunchok Tenzin.

The mandala will be carried through downtown Sunday before being released into the ocean during the Walk for Peace, symbolizing the impermanence of life.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) - The wine industry in California is coming to Santa Barbara to showcase the latest production from multiple regions in a two-day event. A Friday night rare and reserve gathering, and a larger wine festival on Saturday.

"We're at the beach, it is a great vibe, there's music, there's wine, there's also a handful of local breweries that are here," said California Wine Festival CEO, Emily Kaufmann. There are four festival sites in the state throughout the year.

The California Wine Festival will be not just entertaining for those attending, but also educational for those who are following the latest trends, regions, varietals and where the industry may be pivoting due to consumer demands.

Kaufmann said, "each winery will be pouring around 3-4 different wines and there will be something for everyone. There will be a really good mix of whites and reds, sparking wines,  pinot noir, cabernet, you name it, you would be hard pressed to not find a wine that you you want to put on your list."

It gives the public a chance to ask questions, talk to wine makers and do comparisons.

One change this summer is the early harvest that's already been reported in several areas, especially for those making sparkling wines.

And the consumer can also hear about the range of price points.

"Whether it is uh a what I like ot call it an every day wine.... and then a special occasion wine kind of find all that here and I think wineries are trying to make sure their wines are approachable... a great value also bringing in their rare and reserve items," said Kaufmann.

In addition to the tasting of the wide variety of wines, those attending will be the judge of the best tri tip  in the 805 featuring caterers and chefs and restaurants.

"It's a friendly competition but a really good way to taste some local favorites," said Kaufmann.

The Costa Kitchen and Bar made an appearance on the News Channel morning show recently talking about its entry, which will be a candied tri tip.

Chef Sean Conway said they have won in the past and are ready to go against the six others in this  sampling competition.

"The year that we won it we put it on the menu for a year and it was our top seller so we are going to change it up a little bit this time," said Conway.

The location is at the beach on the ocean side of Chase Palm Park across a wide area of the lawn.

There is a reduced price for anyone who is not drinking alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages will be served.

Organizers say they are glad the high heat early this week is gone.

Kaufmann said, "we've added lots of shade this year in between the large pavilion tents. It is going to be a nice 78 degrees with a nice ocean breeze."

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - Temperatures will hold steady this weekend with most of the region in the mid and upper 70s.

Tropical clouds will move in by Sunday with a 10 percent chance of rain, especially for Ventura County.

A tropical cyclone will slide west of the Central Coast by Monday.

Another warmup is expected for the middle of next week with some brief offshore winds.

Temperatures will rise into the 80s and 90s as high pressure moves back west toward California.
