(CNN) — The Senate has kicked off extended debate on the “SAVE America Act” — one of President Donald Trump’s top legislative priorities.

Lawmakers voted to begin consideration of the bill that would require voters to show ID and proof of US citizenship in federal elections. While the legislation is not expected to pass, the debate could yield fierce rhetorical sparring on the floor, with each side believing they are on the right side of history on the issue.

Politically, lawmakers from each party want to demonstrate to their bases that they are going to the mat on the legislation.

Democrats have been preparing to speak at length – and possibly for days – in opposition to the bill. Republicans, meanwhile, are expected to try to add amendments to the legislation that would address asks from Trump, namely provisions that would end the widespread practice of no-excuse mail voting and target transgender policies.

As debate plays out in the Senate in the coming days, Democrats will seek to expose divisions within the Republican conference on the topics, which have at times proven effective culture war fights for the GOP yet are unrelated to the running of elections.

The bill is not expected to pass, as it does not have the 60 votes needed to eventually end debate, and Senate Republicans do not have the votes to change filibuster rules or maintain a lengthy so-called “talking filibuster” that would drag on indefinitely – and risk allowing Senate Democrats to stonewall business in the chamber.

The Senate voted to open debate 51 to 48. In a sign that the votes aren’t there to overcome the 60-vote threshold, despite the president’s insistence on the legislation passing, Republican Lisa Murkowski of Alaska joined Democrats in attempting to block debate on the package.

Instead, Republican leadership has opted to allow senators to hold the floor and debate the package until they exhaust themselves — which could even extend through the weekend — and Senate Majority Leader John Thune moves to end debate.

Most Republicans argue the bill will make elections more secure. Across the aisle, Democrats argue that presenting this kind of paperwork will deter people from voting, and serve as another barrier to the ballot box.

“I’m looking forward to a vigorous, long and spirited conversation on the floor of the United States Senate about these important issues,” Thune said on Tuesday.

“I think it’s an important debate to have because it is an issue that is at the very core of elections in this country, and I think this is something that the American people care about, something that we’ve obviously heard a lot about from constituents across this country.”

Trump has pressured Thune in recent weeks to force the package through the Senate. But the Republican Senate leader has maintained that the package does not have enough support, despite the president’s threats that he won’t sign any legislation until Congress has passed the “SAVE America Act.”

The House passed a version of the bill in February, though it was short of some of Trump’s priorities.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the bill ahead of the vote to start debate.

“The SAVE Act is not about protecting the vote. It’s about making it harder to vote and easier to steal an election,” said Schumer, calling it “a voter suppression bill.”

“Our objection as Democrats is not to a photo ID … our objection is it’s a voter suppression bill,” he argued.

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – On Tuesday, Judge Donna Geck upheld an injunction against a restart of oil production locally despite an order from the Trump Administration forcing a restart.

Under the injunction, Sable Offshore, the Houston-based company working to restart oil production locally since purchasing oil production infrastructure, collectively called the Santa Ynez Unit, from ExxonMobil in February of 2024, was required to notify the court and involved plaintiffs when it receives all the approvals necessary to restart the use of onshore pipelines at least ten court days before starting.

Despite the injunction's restart conditions, Sable Offshore already restarted production at the Santa Ynez Unit, including onshore pipelines, this Saturday in compliance with an executive order issued late Friday of last week.

"It’s a victory for California that the judge kept this injunction in place, but it’s outrageous Sable has been pushing oil through these pipelines in defiance of this clear court order every day since the restart," said Talia Nimmer, an attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity, a litigant in Tuesday's proceedings. "Every second these pipelines are pumping oil puts Californians and our iconic coast and wildlife at risk of another devastating spill. I look forward to being back in court soon to explain why this illegally restarted pipeline system needs to be shut down. Trump and his cronies won’t stop trying to prop up oil industry profits, but we’ll keep fighting to protect California’s coastal communities and hold Sable accountable for its flagrant disregard of environmental laws."

Litigants are due back in court on April 17, 2026.

According to Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, the federal government issued the order to restart production under the authority of the Defense Production Act of 1950 and delegated to the Energy Secretary by Executive Order 13603 "National Defense Resources Preparedness" due to an energy crisis impacting national security.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Justice issued a slip opinion that argued the President, or a designated person, can order Sable Offshore to begin oil production immediately despite the injunction and its conditions surrounding a restart upheld Tuesday.

Tuesday's injunction joins other earlier federal, state, and local hurdles to a restart.

(CNN) — A person was shot at a Veteran’s Affairs clinic in Jasper, Georgia, on Tuesday, and the shooter has been killed by law enforcement, police said.

The shooting was reported at about 1 p.m. at the Pickens County VA Clinic, Jasper Police Chief Matt Dawkins said. Jasper is about 60 miles north of downtown Atlanta.

The victim was transported by helicopter to a hospital, the chief said. Their condition is unknown.

El presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, quiso pegar un home run la noche del lunes con una broma sobre Venezuela y el avance de su equipo a la final del Clásico Mundial de Béisbol, que se disputará este miércoles.

Después de la victoria de Venezuela contra Italia en una de las semifinales del torneo, Trump publicó un mensaje en su plataforma Truth Social, en el que se refirió al marcador y a las “cosas buenas” que le están pasando al país sudamericano.

“¡Guau! Venezuela derrotó a Italia esta noche, 4-2, en la semifinal del WBC (¡béisbol!). Se están viendo realmente geniales”, dijo el mandatario, para después bromear con que la racha del país sudamericano se debe a que podría ser el estado 51 de Estados Unidos.

“¡Últimamente le están pasando cosas buenas a Venezuela! Me pregunto de qué se trata toda esta magia. ¿ESTADO, #51, ALGUIEN? Presidente DONALD J. TRUMP”, señaló.

CNN contactó al Ministerio para la Comunicación e Información de Venezuela para pedir comentarios y está en espera de respuesta.

Por su parte, aunque rechaza la captura de Maduro, Rodríguez asegura que Venezuela quiere tener una relación cordial, de cooperación y respeto con Estados Unidos.

El 5 de marzo, los dos países anunciaron el restablecimiento de sus relaciones diplomáticas y consulares, que estaban rotas desde 2019, durante el primer mandato de Trump al frente de la Casa Blanca.

Frente a estos cambios en la relación entre ambos países, muchos venezolanos dicen sentir incertidumbre sobre el futuro del país. Aunque algunos celebran que Maduro ya no esté al mando después de 13 años en el poder, también expresan reservas sobre el rol que tendrá Estados Unidos en los meses y años por venir, así como sobre si tendrán elecciones en el corto plazo.

Warner Bros. confía tanto en “Dune 3”, que la estrenará este 18 de diciembre, en el mismo día que “Avengers: Doomsday” de Marvel. Será un fin de semana como el que no se ha visto desde 2023, cuando coincidieron los estrenos de “Barbie” y “Oppenheimer”, lo que fue bautizado como “Barbenheimer” por los fans. (Warner Bros. Pictures forma parte, al igual que CNN en Español, de Warner Bros. Discovery).

“Dune 3” es dirigida por el canadiense Denis Villeneuve y su elenco reúne a estrellas como Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor-Joy y Robert Pattinson, entre otros.

El primer tráiler fue lanzado el martes 16 de marzo. El avance ofrece el primer vistazo a dos nuevos personajes: el nuevo villano, Scytale, interpretado por Robert Pattinson (“The Batman”); y Alia Atreides, la hermana pequeña del héroe Paul Atreides, que encarna en la cinta la actriz Anya Taylor-Joy.

“Dune 3” adapta el libro “Dune Messiah” de Frank Herbert. Se desarrolla 17 años después de los acontecimientos de “Dune: Part Two”. Se centra en Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) como emperador, luego de que matara a su principal enemigo, el barón Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård), quien ideó el plan que llevó a la muerte de su padre, y tras comprometerse en matrimonio con la hija del emperador, la princesa Irulan (Florence Pugh).

El tráiler muestra que la victoria de Paul Atreides llegó con un precio, pues los conflictos políticos y religiosos se intensifican y varias conspiraciones buscan provocar su caída.
