Havana, Cuba (CNN) — As President Donald Trump rachets up the pressure on Cuba’s communist-run government and threatens a US “takeover” of the island, he frequently repeats a central promise: that decades after they left, Cuban exiles will soon be able to return to their homeland.

“A lot of unbelievable people are going to be going back to Cuba, hopefully not to stay,” Trump said at a recent White House event with prominent members of the Cuban American community in attendance. “We don’t want to make it so nice that they stay. But some people probably do want to stay.
They love Cuba so much,” he said.

Trump’s claim has struck a chord with many in the Cuban exile community who vowed never to return to the island while the Castros remained in power. But it also flies in the face of the reality that in recent years, an increasing number of Cubans who left are returning to see family, vacation and even quietly set up small businesses fronted by local partners.

The invitation to Cuban exiles to do business in their homeland has been made repeatedly by the government over the years but so far has produced few tangible results.

On Monday night, Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga, Cuba’s deputy prime minister and minister for foreign trade and investment who is also a great-nephew of Fidel and Raúl Castro, said in a televised appearance that Cuban exiles are welcome to invest in the island.

Cuban exiles, Oliva Fraga said, would for the first time be able to openly own businesses on the island, invest in large-scale infrastructure projects, and hold bank accounts with state-run banks.

The offer will likely to do little to placate those in the Cuban American community advocating for greater political freedoms, a full economic opening and the return of property seized from exiles.

Exiles seek major overhaul

US economic sanctions block most commercial activity with the island. Many Cuban exiles say that Havana’s own tight restrictions on foreign investment severely limit business opportunities and that routine transactions take years under Cuba’s communist bureaucracy.

A wide-ranging overhaul of the island’s economic and legal system needs to happen before many exiles will consider returning to rebuild their country, said Pedro Freyre, a Cuban American who chairs the Akerman law firm’s international practice and has advised US companies on doing business in Cuba.

The island has reached “that moment when the emperor has no clothes,” Freyre told CNN. “We’re done here. You know, this thing collapsed, it failed, but we have a great opportunity to redo it, and we can do it.”

“If there’s a couple of things that we know how to do as Cuban Americans, it’s number one, build cities,” he added.

“I’ve dealt with the Cuban government before. There are smart people, people who are well-trained, well-educated, who understand what’s going on, and who have a built-in incentive,” Freyre said. “They’ve seen the destruction and the collapse of the country over the 60 years, and now the door is open.”

Llegó la hora de la verdad. Después de doce días de béisbol en estado puro, el Clásico Mundial de 2026 llega a su fin este martes, con la gran final del torneo entre el seleccionado local por terreno, Estados Unidos, y el seleccionado local por pasión y sentimiento, Venezuela.

Cada uno con sus armas, Estados Unidos y Venezuela arriban a un cara a cara por la gloria. De un lado, la novena norteamericana, que bordeó la eliminación en primera ronda, pero que desde entonces mostró reacción en el campo. Del otro, un elenco sudamericano que sabe de hazañas y remontadas.

Estados Unidos avanzó como segunda de su zona. Debutó con una paliza a Brasil por 15 a 5, y luego siguió otra por 9 a 1 a Gran Bretaña. Hasta allí lo sencillo, porque luego siguió un ajustado 5-3 a México y la que hasta ahora es su única derrota: un 6-8 ante Italia. El seleccionado de las barras y las estrellas tuvo que conseguir la clasificación a cuartos de final por televisión, con la derrota de México ante los italianos.

Ya en cuartos le tocó Canadá, ante la que no lo sobró nada: fue 5-3, siempre con la sombra de la remontada canadiense en el horizonte. En semifinales despachó a un candidato al título, República Dominicana, en un juego que se decidió por 2 a 1 con un polémico (y decididamente erróneo) arbitraje, especialmente en el epílogo del juego.

Venezuela, por su parte, comenzó su camino con un triunfo por 6-2 sobre Países Bajos gracias a una buena actuación en el bate de Luis Arráez y Willson Contreras en la quinta entrada. A eso le siguió una paliza a Israel, que terminó 11-3 gracias a una noche fantástica de Arráez, y una noche perfecta de su pitcheo en el 4-0 a Nicaragua.

La única derrota llegó contra la República Dominicana de Juan Soto y Vladimir Guerrero Jr., entre otros bates destacados, que hicieron la diferencia en la primera mitad del juego y ganaron 7 a 5. Venezuela, de todas maneras, mostró reacción en el final, dejando una señal de que no se rinde fácilmente.

En cuartos llegó el primer cimbronazo de los sudamericanos en el torneo. Enfrente se les puso la Japón de Shohei Ohtani, invicta hasta allí, que ganaba por 5 a 2 ya en la tercera entrada. (CNN) — Frustration is mounting in the White House and among US allies, as countries resist US President Donald Trump’s pressure campaign to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, and as Trump rebuffs Iran’s attempts at diplomacy.

The president again gave a vague timeline for the end of the war with Iran, saying it will be “wrapped up soon.” Meanwhile, Israel is planning a major ground offensive in Lebanon – alarming Western leaders who warn of “devastating” humanitarian consequences.

Here’s what to know on day 18.

What are the main headlines?

• “Not NATO’s war”: EU foreign ministers decided against expanding their naval operations around the Strait of Hormuz, even as Trump criticized allies who rebuffed his demands for assistance in reopening the critical waterway. He said he will “soon” announce countries that have agreed to help, while acknowledging many have rejected his overtures. On Monday, a spokesperson for the German chancellor said: “It is not NATO’s war.”
• Diplomacy stalled: Iranian officials have reached out to Trump’s Middle East envoy, trying to reopen a diplomatic channel, but Trump said he didn’t want to negotiate now, two senior White House officials told CNN. Part of the reason is because Trump’s administration is not confident that Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, “is actually in charge,” one of the officials said. Iran’s foreign minister denied having any contact with the president’s envoy in recent days, as the White House officials claim.
• Patience runs thin: Some American, European and Asian diplomats are growing increasingly frustrated with the Trump administration’s refusal to use traditional diplomatic channels. “If there was more diplomatic engagement on the US side, they might be able to get a more positive outcome,” said one European diplomat.
• Alarm over Lebanon: The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and the UK said they were “gravely concerned” about growing violence in Lebanon, after Israel said earlier it is expanding “limited” ground operations there. The five governments warned that Israel’s planned invasion “must be averted.” More than 1 million people in Lebanon have been internally displaced and at least 850 people killed since the latest conflict began, according to Lebanese authorities.
• Trump’s China trip: Trump’s planned trip to China this month, where he was set to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, could be delayed by “a month or so” due to the war, he said. The president has urged China to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

El seleccionado de Venezuela escribió este lunes una de las páginas más importantes de su historia en el béisbol, al derrotar al combinado nacional de Italia por 4 a 2 en las semifinales del Clásico Mundial, ganándose un boleto directo a la gran final del torneo ante Estados Unidos, este mismo martes.

La gesta sudamericana se dio ante el escenario más complicado posible, ya que enfrente tenía a la última selección invicta del certamen, una Italia que hasta derrotó a Estados Unidos en la primera fase del torneo.

Y los europeos (que, en realidad, son en buena parte nacidos en Estados Unidos, pero con raíces en Italia) fueron los que comenzaron adelante, con una segunda entrada donde aprovecharon un mal rato de Keider Montero en el pitcheo, con tres jugadores seguidos que ganaron base por bola, lo que le permitió a Zach Dezenzo sumar la primera carrera de la noche en Miami. Ya con Ricardo Sánchez en el montículo, fue Jac Caglianone quien anotó el 2-0 gracias a un bateo de Dante Nori.

Venezuela tardó cuatro entradas en aparecer en ofensiva, y lo hizo con bombos y platillos. En realidad, con bateo de jonrón de Eugenio Suárez, quién envió un imparable entre los jardines izquierdo y central para el 1-2.

Fue el final de la noche de Michael Lorenzen en el pitcheo para Italia, aunque el daño ya estaba hecho. Venezuela se mostró sólida desde el montículo e impidió cualquier intento de hazaña europea hasta el último out, el de Sam Antonacci en la novena, el que desató el júbilo venezolano dentro y fuera del campo.

El Clásico Mundial tendrá representante sudamericano. Venezuela ha hecho historia, llegando por primera vez a la final del torneo. Pasaron Japón e Italia, dos que sucumbieron al poderío de la novena de la Vinotinto, o la Arepa Power, para algunos. Ahora, llegará el turno de Estados Unidos. Y será en desventaja con el descanso, debido a que los norteamericanos jugaron el domingo. Pero Venezuela conoce de hazañas, y este martes, en Miami, buscará la gesta más grande en su deporte predilecto.

(CNN) — The Virginia man accused of planting two pipe bombs in Washington, DC, the night before the 2021 US Capitol riot asked a federal judge on Monday to dismiss his case, arguing that President Donald Trump’s expansive pardon of January 6 rioters applies to him.

Brian Cole Jr.’s alleged conduct “is so inextricably and demonstrably tethered to the ‘events at or near the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021’” that Trump’s sweeping clemency prevents him from being prosecuted, his lawyers argued in a filing.

“The President’s Pardon unequivocally applies to Mr. Cole, because in no manner is Mr. Cole’s alleged conduct wholly independent of events at the Capitol on January 6,” the attorneys said.

CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.

Politico was first to report on the motion to dismiss.

On his first day in office last year, Trump issued a “full, complete and unconditional pardon” to nearly every person who was convicted of attacking the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, marking the end of a sweeping four-year Justice Department probe.

Prosecutors say that Cole placed bombs near the Republican and Democratic national committees’ headquarters on the night of January 5, 2021, and note that the discovery of the bombs diverted law enforcement from the violence at the Capitol the next day.

The FBI arrested Cole in December at his home, where he lived with his parents. He pleaded not guilty in January to federal charges of transporting and attempting to use explosives.

The FBI, which conducted a yearslong investigation, alleges that Cole compiled bomb-making supplies for months before leaving the viable explosive devices outside of the political offices.

Cole’s legal team previously argued the alleged devices could never have exploded and say their client has been entirely peaceful and follows a strict routine due to his diagnoses, which include autism. Their Monday filing notes that Cole disputes the government’s allegations and maintains his innocence.

During interviews with the FBI, Cole told investigators that he believed the 2020 election was stolen, CNN previously reported. Investigators also say they linked Cole’s phone data to cell towers around Washington, DC’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. The calls and texts he made matched security footage time stamps that show how the bomber moved the evening he planted the devices, they said.
