(CNN) — The Smithsonian has taken down details about President Donald Trump’s impeachments from an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.

The removal occurred last week when the museum installed a black-and-white portrait of Trump in the “America’s Presidents” exhibition with a short label that notes his birth date and that he is the 45th and 47th president.

The previous label, according to the museum website, included more details, and the sentence: “Impeached twice, on charges of abuse of power and incitement of insurrection after supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, he was acquitted by the Senate in both trials.”

The new portrait, by White House photographer Daniel Torok, shows Trump standing in the Oval Office with his hands balled into fists on the resolute desk.

In a statement to CNN on Sunday, a spokesperson for the Smithsonian told CNN that the National Portrait Gallery has begun an update to the “America’s Presidents” exhibition and is looking into a more minimalist approach for new additions.

“For some new exhibitions and displays, the museum has been exploring quotes or tombstone labels, which provide only general information, such as the artist’s name,” the spokesperson said. “The history of Presidential impeachments continues to be represented in our museums, including the National Museum of American History.”

The administration praised the new portrait and touted it on social media over the weekend. In a statement to CNN on Sunday, a White House spokesman said Trump’s “unmatched aura will be seen and felt throughout the halls of the National Portrait Gallery.”

The new portrait and exhibition label comes as the Smithsonian faces pressure from the White House to comply with its unprecedented, wide-ranging review and align itself with the administration’s push to stamp out what it considers anti-American propaganda.

Last month, the administration signaled that it would withhold federal funding allocated to the museum complex if it did not share materials it had asked for in August. In a letter to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch III, White House officials said materials the institution handed over in September “fell far short of what was requested, and the overwhelming majority of requested items remain outstanding.”

The officials set a new deadline, January 13, to turn over the materials, which include gallery labels, future exhibition plans and curatorial manuals, among other things.

“The American people will have no patience for any museum that is diffident about America’s founding or otherwise uncomfortable conveying a positive view of American history, one which is justifiably proud of our country’s accomplishments and record,” the officials said.

The Smithsonian has had to contend with increased scrutiny from the administration over the past year, as Trump has sought to exert influence over the institution, which has long held that it is not an executive agency, but a unique private-public partnership.

La secretaria de Seguridad Nacional de Estados Unidos, Kristi Noem, anunció este domingo el envío de “cientos más” de agentes federales a Minneapolis para reforzar la seguridad de ICE tras la muerte de Renee Good durante un operativo de control inmigratorio, y arremetió contra las autoridades locales por, según dijo, no colaborar con el Gobierno federal.

“Estamos enviando más agentes hoy y mañana. Serán cientos más para permitir que nuestro personal de ICE y de la Patrulla Fronteriza que trabaja en Minneapolis pueda hacerlo de forma segura”, dijo Noem en Fox News. Un portavoz del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) precisó a CNN que se trata de agentes de la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza (CBP, pro sus siglas en inglés).

En entrevista con CNN para el programa “State of the Union”, Noem defendió que bajo el Gobierno de Trump las leyes se aplican “por igual”, incluso cuando fue confrontada con imágenes del 6 de enero de 2021 de personas atacando a fuerzas del orden que luego fueron indultadas por el presidente. “Cada situación depende del contexto en el que estén los agentes”, dijo. “Cuando alguien les pone las manos encima, usa armas o los hiere, ellos tienen autoridad para arrestar y asegurar que enfrenten consecuencias”.

Noem también pidió a Walz y a Frey “madurar” y los acusó de haber “avivado la tensión pública” tras la muerte de Good. “Han politizado de forma extrema e inapropiada lo que ocurrió en su ciudad. Han alentado la destrucción y la violencia que hemos visto en Minneapolis”, dijo. Aseguró que el DHS mantiene sus protocolos en la investigación del caso y que espera cooperación local para arrestar a inmigrantes indocumentados con antecedentes criminales.

La funcionaria sostuvo además que no se apresuró al calificar el hecho como “terrorismo interno”. Dijo que, tras revisar videos y hablar con los agentes, concluyó que el vehículo de Good fue “usado como arma” contra un agente. La muerte del cantante colombiano Yeison Jiménez, de 34 años, fallecido en un accidente aéreo el sábado, tiene conmocionado al país sudamericano, mientras avanzan las investigaciones sobre el siniestro en el que también murieron otras cinco personas.

Autoridades locales y regionales y políticos de varios partidos expresaron en redes sociales su pesar por la noticia. Jiménez, intérprete de música popular y de origen humilde, trabajó en su infancia en Corabastos, el principal mercado de productos agroalimentarios de Bogotá. Para muchos, estaba en la cúspide de su carrera.

La Fiscalía General informó que abrió “una indagación relacionada con el siniestro de la aeronave particular”, un bimotor Piper Navajo, de propiedad del cantante, que se estrelló al intentar despegar del aeropuerto de Paipa (Boyacá) y cayó en un campo cercano al final de la pista. Los cuerpos de los seis ocupantes fueron trasladados a la sede del Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal en Bogotá.

La cuenta oficial del artista informó que viajaba junto a integrantes de su equipo de trabajo. “Yeison fue perseverancia, disciplina y amor por su gente. Su voz y su ejemplo nacieron del esfuerzo, y por eso marcaron para siempre la vida de quienes lo siguieron y lo quisieron (…) Viaja al infinito mi aventurero”, indicó el comunicado.

La agencia que representaba Jiménez dijo que se desplazaba hacia Marinilla para una presentación musical. “Fue más que un cantante: fue la voz de una generación que encontró en sus canciones un refugio, una confesión y una fuerza para seguir adelante”, dijo su representante, Paola España.

“Expreso mis sentidas condolencias y mi solidaridad a las familias, amigos y seguidores del cantante Yeison Jiménez”, escribió en X la vicepresidenta de Colombia, Francia Márquez, al lamentar la muerte del artista.

Jiménez se consolidó como una de las figuras más influyentes de la música popular en Colombia con éxitos como “Sublime mujer”, “Aventurero” y “Vete”, entre otros.

En Manzanares, departamento de Caldas, tierra natal del artista, la Alcaldía decretó tres días de luto.

(CNN) — A fire tore through Beth Israel, the only synagogue in Jackson, Mississippi, on Saturday, leaving the congregation forced to rebuild from the ashes — again.

Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the fire, which remains under investigation, but it comes amid a wave of antisemitic attacks in recent years.

The fire occurred around 3 a.m., according to Jackson Mayor John Horhn. “The Jackson Fire Department responded quickly, contained the blaze and extinguished the fire,” Horhn said.

This isn’t the first time the synagogue has burned. On September 18, 1967, Beth Israel’s temple was bombed by local Ku Klux Klan members, in part because of the congregation’s work in the civil rights movement, according to the synagogue’s website.

The congregation intends to rebuild its “beloved institution,” said Zach Shemper, the congregation’s president.

“We are a resilient people. With the support from the community, we will rebuild. Beth Israel Congregation has been the Jewish spiritual home in Jackson, MS for over 160 years,” Shemper said.

The congregation is still assessing the damage but will continue worship services and other programs, and several local churches have offered Beth Israel the use of their buildings as they rebuild, Shemper said.

A suspect is expected to face arson charges, according to Charles Felton, chief of investigations for the Jackson Fire Department’s Arson Investigation Division.

The suspect was found at a local hospital with non-life-threatening burn injuries and, once medically cleared, will be released into the custody of the FBI, which is also expected to file charges, Felton said.

Investigators determined the fire started in the synagogue’s library, which sustained extensive damage, and the destruction continued toward the sanctuary, Felton said. He added that there is smoke damage throughout the building, meaning the congregation will not be able to return for some time.

Several Torah scrolls were destroyed, according to the American Jewish Committee, which condemned the incident as a “hateful act.”

CNN has reached out to Beth Israel for comment and additional details about the damage to the synagogue.
