Kyiv (CNN) — Russia launched one of its largest aerial attacks this month on Ukraine overnight, killing at least three people and injuring at least 17 others, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, as Ukraine’s leader received his first face-to-face briefing with his negotiating team on their arrival back from talks in the US.

“Russia has been carrying out a massive attack on Ukraine,” Zelensky posted on X, adding that more than 650 drones and over 30 missiles were used in the strike. Some 13 regions, about half the country, came under attack, he said.

In the western region of Zhytomyr, a 4-year-old child was killed after a Russian drone struck a residential building, Zelensky said.

Meanwhile, emergency power cuts were imposed across the country with some regions left almost completely without power due to the attack, according to Ukraine’s energy ministry.

The latest bombardment comes after a fresh round of talks to end the war wrapped over the weekend in Miami, where Ukrainian and Russian officials met separately with a US delegation led by White House envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of President Donald Trump.

On the ground, Kyiv’s troops retreated from the town of Siversk in eastern Ukraine on Tuesday, according to the country’s armed forces, as Russian forces pushed through “active offensive operations.”

Ukrainian solders withdrew from the area in Donetsk to “save the lives of our soldiers and maintain the combat capability of our units,” the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said in a statement.

“The invaders were able to advance thanks to their significant numerical superiority and constant pressure” despite “difficult weather conditions,” Ukraine’s Armed Forces added.

Moscow broke through swathes of the city this week after a lightning offensive along eastern frontlines over the summer. Even so, Ukrainian troops have maintained “fire control” of Siversk and Russian units are “being blocked,” the country’s armed forces said Tuesday.

“All measures are being taken to reduce the offensive potential of enemy units,” the statement said.

‘Very close to a real outcome’

Ukraine’s delegation arrived back in Kyiv overnight and delivered what Zelensky called a “detailed report” of the talks.

“Not everything is perfect so far, but this plan is in place,” Ukraine’s leader wrote on X overnight, referring to the 20-point document, which forms the core of an agreement framework between Ukraine and the US.

In addition to the core plan, which include security guarantees “between us, the Europeans, and the United States,” Zelensky wrote, there is an additional document detailing bilateral security guarantees between Ukraine and the US. On this latter point, he said, “we are very close to a real outcome.”

(CNN) — 2025 was a year of extremes in beauty culture. The $450 million industry felt more polarized than ever, with a push towards “low maintenance” routines that encouraged us to ditch our mascaras or go makeup-free entirely, Pamela Anderson style. The shift came from the fact that this low-effort look often required “high maintenance” treatments like lash lifts, teeth whitening, laser hair removal, or even cosmetic procedures, to be achieved. While some brands were telling us to “redefine beauty on your terms,” others were selling us compression face shapewear to sculpt our jaws.

The scope of beauty widened, too. In November, the Canadian actress and entrepreneur Shay Mitchell made headlines when she launched Rini, a skincare line that offers hydrogel sheet masks for children as young as 3. We also saw the rise of canine beauty, with vegan pH-balanced luxury shampoos infused with vitamins, coat oils and dry shampoos that double as doggie fragrance. No corporeal zone was off-limits either, as previously undiscussed body parts were platformed in new ways. The New York Times described scalps as the new “It” area as more people spent money on high-end head spas, while earlier this summer, Vogue Business declared the next wellness craze to be “booty beauty,” as more brands flock to create all-over-body deodorants, bottom care and “hole serums.” Kate Winslet summed it up best when responding to today’s beauty standards in a recent interview with The Times of London: “It is f***ing chaos out there.”

To help make sense of it all, CNN asked three prolific beauty writers to sound-off, unfiltered, on the moments they believe defined the year that was.

In 2025, with every inch of the human body commodified at last — see: “holecare” — the beauty industry set its sights on the nonhuman. Introducing: canine cosmetics, the break-out category of the year!

Lil Luv Dog, co-founded by the former COO of Kim Kardashian West Brands and backed by $1 million in venture capital, launched in August with $36, EWG-verified dry shampoo (“so your dog doesn’t smell… like dog”). Welltayl followed in October; its Skin + Coat Care Kit, $98, can “cleanse, hydrate and protect without disrupting the skin barrier.” Ex-beauty editor Alexandra Pauly will debut her “beauty for the beast” line, Biche, next month. The fur oil features a “signature fragrance” for “humans to smell and enjoy,” Pauly tells CNN.

And humans do seem to enjoy this. Morgan Stanley estimates the pet grooming industry will grow over 7% annually through 2030, potentially outpacing the growth of beauty products for people (5% annually through 2030, according to McKinsey & Company). Allure readers even asked for more “pet beauty content” in a 2025 survey.

But why?

I’d blame anthropomorphization, for starters. As more people opt out of parenthood, dogs are the new kids. Consider scented coat conditioner the “baby sheet mask” of fur babies.

Evolutionarily speaking, people also see themselves in their pups. Both species communicate through facial expressions, and dogs have developed new facial muscles over time — brow-furrowers, mainly — to better mimic their masters. (I pray Botox for bulldogs isn’t on the horizon.) Mayb

“Yo quiero una pistola por Navidad”, le dice al padre Elky Segura uno de los niños que juegan en la puerta del ‘Comedor parroquial León XIV”. “Pistola no, es malo”, le contesta el padre con una sonrisa. “De juguete”, aclara el pequeño.

Los niños ríen y hacen bulla; el viento levanta la tierra afuera del comedor de material prefabricado. Adentro, cerca de la cocina, pequeña y muy sencilla, las fotos del entonces monseñor Robert Prevost están pegadas en la pared, como una estampita que los cuida. Son de 2018, año en el que inauguró el lugar con fondos de Cáritas, la confederación de la iglesia para obras sociales.

En la cocina, Rosita y Daria sirven el almuerzo a una parte de las 70 personas que comen en este lugar a diario. Daria cuenta que su día inicia a las 6:30 de la mañana. “Soy la que hace las compras, me voy al mercado. Yo le pregunto a Rosita un día antes qué se va a hacer”. Así, desde las nueve de la mañana, Rosita hace el milagro de todo cocinero.

El padre Elky Segura es párroco de la parroquia Señor de los Milagros de la Diócesis de Chiclayo, que tiene cuatro capillas. En una de ellas, está el comedor inaugurado por Prevost.

“Moseñor Prevost, viendo que aquí había una capilla y un terreno amplio, decidió construir con Cáritas” el comedor y “los primeros atendidos fueron venezolanos”, dice en referencia a la gran cantidad de migrantes que había en 2018. Chiclayo es una de las ciudades con mayor cantidad de migrantes venezolanos de Perú y una alta porción de ellos viven en la vulnerabilidad, según el Instituto Nacional de Estadística e Informática (INEI).

A partir del nombramiento de Prevost como papa, en mayo pasado, “le hemos puesto León XVI”, cuenta a CNN Elky Segura. El comedor queda en San Antonio, una zona de bajos recursos de Chichayo.

El padre Elky conoció al hoy papa León XIV en 2015, meses después de su llegada a Chiclayo, donde vivió de 2014 a 2023. “Es un pastor prudente, escucha mucho, no toma decisiones improvisadas, reflexiona mucho, discierne. Él nunca ha tenido un sacerdote amigo, en particular, con todos era igual, no había distinción”, dice Elky.

Para Elky Segura, su mayor legado es la enseñanza que les dio para “abrir los ojos a los más necesitados”.

Y esa enseñanza y el recuerdo de Prevost estarán en cada rincón de la ciudad en esta Navidad, la primera del exobispo de Chiclayo como papa.

En el comedor, Daria y Rosita, gracias a una donación, reparten víveres por Navidad a quienes almuerzan allí. Daria, increíblemente, conoce el nombre de cada uno de los beneficiarios, “ella Irene, ella Amanda…”. Con su celular, quiere capturar la entrega de los alimentos, pero se detiene de pronto. “Un ratito porque no he filmado nada”, ríe, cuando se da cuenta que no ha presionado el botón para grabar.

Daria conoció a Prevost mientras él realizaba su trabajo pastoral. Como muchos en Chiclayo, tiene una foto con el hoy papa. Rosita también lo conoció y recuerda que veía a Prevost llegar a la capilla como obispo de Chiclayo. Su deseo para el 2026 es “que venga a conocer, darle un abrazo ya como nuestro papa”, dice sonriendo.

Robert Prevost vivió y trabajó en el obispado de Chiclayo durante 8 de los más de 20 años que estuvo en Perú. En la puerta del edificio, Jimmy, encargado de la seguridad, saluda a CNN como en mayo 2025, cuando el mundo se preguntaba dónde quedaba Chiclayo, la ciudad que el nuevo papa había mencionado como su “querida diócesis” durante su discurso inaugural como León XIV.
