Pope Leo appoints pro-migrant archbishop of New York, signaling Church’s more robust approach to Trump

(CNN) — Pope Leo has appointed a new archbishop of New York who has first-hand experience of countries from where millions have emigrated to the United States, signaling the potential for a more outspoken approach from bishops on immigration.

The pope has chosen 58-year-old bishop Ronald Hicks to lead the church in New York, an appointment that comes at a time when the Trump administration has been ramping up its anti-immigration policies to which the Catholic Church in the US has responded with more vocal criticism.

Leo’s nomination of Hicks is his most significant appointment to the church in the United States since his election, with the archbishop of New York holding an important position on the national stage both in the church and across the US. Archbishops of New York are normally made cardinals, and Hicks can expect even greater scrutiny at a time when the Catholic Church is led by its first American pope.

Last month, Hicks made a statement on immigration, “expressing our solidarity with all our brothers and sisters.” He was responding to a rare intervention from the US bishops criticizing the White House’s immigration policies, saying that their message underlines their “concerns, opposition, and hopes with clarity and conviction.”

Bishop Hicks is, like the pope, a fellow Chicagoan who has spent time in Latin America. Hicks, until now the Bishop of Joliet, Illinois, had a five-year stint in El Salvador where he worked to help orphaned and abandoned children. He also did similar work in Mexico prior to that. His background reflects the growing influence of the Hispanic Catholic community in the US and resembles a similar background to that of Leo who spent many years as a missionary and bishop in Peru.

Hicks will succeed Cardinal Timothy Dolan who turned 75 earlier this year, the age when bishops are required to offer their resignation to the pope. Leo has now accepted the cardinal’s resignation, which brings to a close a tenure marked by Dolan’s prominence as one of the most recognizable Catholic leaders in the US.

Warmer relationship with Trump

Dolan has long been known as a skilled communicator, pastor, and church historian, with a profile that extended beyond his archdiocese. During the Francis pontificate, however, Dolan was sometimes perceived at odds with the late pope’s priorities, though he consistently expressed respect for Francis.

Cardinal Dolan, while maintaining relationships across the political spectrum, also had a warmer relationship with President Donald Trump than Pope Francis did: he said the president “takes his Christian faith seriously” while leading the invocation prayer at Trump’s 2025 inauguration and praying at the same 2017 event.

DHS rolled out a new plane. Here’s why it might look familiar

(CNN) — The Department of Homeland Security’s newest airplane has a very familiar, very Trumpian look.

Photos captured over the weekend at Reagan National Airport outside Washington, DC, show the department’s newly acquired Boeing 737 adorned with a design akin to President Donald Trump’s proposed paint scheme for a new Air Force One — a deep red stripe down the middle of the aircraft, a dark blue underbelly and an American flag painted on the tail. Both use colors similar to Trump’s private 757, known as “Trump Force One.”

Beyond just reflecting Trump’s taste, the planes may have another connection.

Open-source flight tracking records compiled by ADS-B Exchange show that before arriving in the DC area, the new DHS plane made stops in Ardmore, Oklahoma and Lake Charles, Louisiana. Landlocked Aviation, the same company involved in repainting Trump Force One, has an office in Lake Charles.

Asked for comment by CNN, Landlocked Aviation would not confirm it was involved in repainting the plane. CNN also reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for additional details.

The DHS plane previously carried a deep grey and gold paint scheme, according to photos posted online.

Back during Trumps first term, he unveiled a new look for Air Force One, revealing four mock-ups of a red, white and blue presidential plane with an American flag on the tail that he said in an interview with ABC were “all slightly different.” A model of the redesigned plane was also displayed on the coffee table in the Oval Office. But the proposal was later abandoned under the Biden administration due to cost and engineering concerns.

DHS, meanwhile, got an historic infusion of cash from Congress earlier this year to fuel the president’s mass deportation agenda. Those funds have in part been used to create the department’s own fleet of 737 jets to carry out deportations and facilitate Cabinet travel.

19 of the richest LGBTQ+ people in the world

Published by the Center for American Progress in June 2025, the results of the 2024 report on the LGBTQ+ wage gap are dispiriting—if not surprising. On average, LGBTQ+ households earned 85 cents for every dollar non-LGBTQ+ households earned in 2024. Over a year, that translated to some $12,580 in lost income. The wage gap widened even further for transgender households (70 cents to the dollar), Black LGBTQ+ households (61 cents to the dollar), and LGBTQ+ women households (52 cents to the dollar).

It’s no secret that billionaires and millionaires are overwhelmingly composed of white, cisgender, heterosexual men. However, as LGBTQ+ acceptance has made strides in recent decades, more and more high-profile people have become comfortable openly identifying as members of the various LGBTQ+ communities and advocating on their behalf in multiple industries. About 9.3% of Americans identify as LGBTQ+, according to a Gallup poll released in 2025.

Naturally, some of the most financially successful LGBTQ+ people are celebrities—look at music legend Elton John or talk show star Ellen DeGeneres. Others, meanwhile, have gained ground in such industries as business, among them Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, kombucha mogul GT Dave, and Apple’s current CEO, Tim Cook. Fashion is another well-represented avenue, home to iconic gay fashion designers like Michael Kors, Stefano Gabbana, and Domenico Dolce.

To spotlight some of these successful individuals, Stacker has compiled a list of 19 of the wealthiest LGBTQ+ people worldwide. We sourced official data from the Forbes real-time billionaires list, Celebrity Net Worth, Bloomberg Billionaires Index, and news reports to do so. However, it’s also worth acknowledging that this is not a comprehensive list. We recognize there may be many wealthy individuals who choose not to be public about their LGBTQ+ identities. Unless otherwise noted, this data is up to date as of Dec. 5, 2025. Individuals are listed in ascending order of net wealth.
