Yangon, Myanmar (CNN) — Polls opened in Myanmar on Sunday kick-starting a controversial election the military junta says will return democratic rule, nearly five years after it seized power from an elected government, unleashing a brutal civil war it has yet to win.

The country’s most popular politician Aung San Suu Kyi is languishing in prison and its most successful political party has been dissolved. The ballot is dominated by parties perceived to be close to the military and hundreds have been arrested under a new law criminalizing obstruction, disruption and criticism of the poll.

And there are whole swaths of the country where voting will not take place, as the junta continues to battle a patchwork of ethnic rebels and pro-democracy fighters in the hilly borderlands and arid central plains.

A year ago, those groups inflicted a series of defeats on the military – with many opponents briefly dreaming the generals might be toppled, ending their decades-long dominance of the country’s politics and economy.

But this year junta troops – reinforced by tens of thousands of men drafted under a new conscription law and backed by new Chinese weaponry – have clawed back territory.

That, analysts say, has provided an opening for the junta to hold the vote, with generals hoping a new parliament, in which a quarter of seats will be reserved for the military, will convince some in the international community to re-engage with Myanmar after years in a post-coup wilderness.

In Myanmar’s commercial hub Yangon, national flags lined the main highway into town and electronic billboards broadcast state media coverage of the vote, set to be held in three stages into January, with the first day of voting on Sunday.

The junta’s leadership has made clear which way it thinks citizens should vote.

Sen. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, who led the 2021 coup, called on voters to select candidates “who can cooperate sincerely with the Tatmadaw,” state-run media reported, using the Burmese word for the military.

A new democracy or a sham?

The atmosphere has been markedly more muted than previous elections in the last decade, during Myanmar’s experiment with a more open democracy. Absent from the billboards and the state media coverage is Suu Kyi, for decades the figurehead of Myanmar’s struggle for democracy.

Detained since the coup, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who turned 80 this year, is currently serving a 27-year jail sentence after being convicted in a junta court on a litany of charges that critics say were designed to remove her from politics.

The brand of non-violent resistance that once made Suu Kyi’s name has been all but forgotten since the coup as civil war rages.

Meanwhile, the military has been relentless in its attacks on opponents.

A casi un mes de que se llevaron a cabo las elecciones generales en Honduras, en las que el conservador Nasry “Tito” Asfura fue declarado ganador de la contienda por la Presidencia, el oficialista Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) mantiene un frente abierto en la disputa por la capital del país centroamericano, Tegucigalpa, donde exige un recuento de votos y convoca a una movilización este lunes.

El expresidente Manuel Zelaya, coordinador general de Libre, llamó este sábado a que la militancia salga a las calles ese día a las 16:00 horas, hora local, para protestar frente al Instituto Nacional de Formación Profesional (Infop), donde se resguarda el material de los comicios, para exigir un voto por voto y defender lo que describe como un “triunfo irrefutable” de Jorge Aldana, actual alcalde de Tegucigalpa y quien busca la reelección.

“Las más de 9000 actas impugnadas a nivel nacional, entre candidatos (a) alcaldes y diputados al paso que van tampoco serán escrutadas”, dijo Zelaya en X.

“Si el pueblo no se moviliza porque es navidad, la militancia del partido libre por conciencia debe movilizarse este lunes al INFOP a las 4 pm para apoyar Aldana en resistencia pacífica, no violenta y democrática que ya le están aplicando el ‘Algoritmo Trump 2025 – Wins Honduras-style elections’”, agregó el exmandatario, en alusión al apoyo que el presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, dio a Asfura días antes de las votaciones. Para los rivales de Asfura, dicho respaldo fue definitorio del resultado; en tanto, Asfura dice que fue importante pero argumenta que él ganó por mérito propio.

El miércoles, el Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE) declaró ganador a Asfura con una diferencia de apenas el 0,74 % de la votación por encima del también conservador Salvador Nasralla, del Partido Liberal. La candidata oficialista, Rixi Moncada, quedó en tercer lugar en la contienda del 30 de noviembre.

Durante los comicios, los hondureños también votaron para elegir 128 asientos del Congreso, 20 lugares en el Parlamento Centroamericano y cargos en 298 alcaldías.

En la disputa por la capital del país, Aldana asegura que los números le favorecen, por lo que exige un recuento total y público.

“¿Por qué no quieren contar los votos? ¿Por qué no quieren contar las actas? ¿Qué esconden?”, dijo Aldana este sábado en X.

“CNE, lo reiteramos con claridad: no pedimos nada indebido. Exigimos que se respete el voto de la gente”, insistió.

CNN contactó al CNE para pedir comentarios sobre la exigencia de Zelaya, Aldana y Libre y está en espera de respuesta. Días atrás, las consejeras del CNE Ana Paola Hall y Cossette López dijeron ser víctimas de una “evidente persecución política”.

Aldana disputa la Alcaldía de Tegucigalpa con Juan Diego Zelaya, del Partido Nacional al igual que Asfura, y quien este sábado consideró que los llamados del expresidente Zelaya y Libre a realizar movilizaciones representan “escenarios de presión política que solo profundizan la confrontación y el caos”.

(CNN) — Imani Smith, who once played a young Nala in Disney’s “The Lion King” on Broadway, died on Sunday after she was found with stab wounds at a home, according to the Middlesex County, New Jersey, Prosecutor’s Office.

She “had her whole life ahead of her,” a GoFundMe account set up by Smith’s aunt, Kira Helper, said. “She was a vivacious, loving and fiercely talented person.”

On December 21, just after 9:15 a.m., authorities in Edison, New Jersey, received a 911 call about a stabbing, according to a release.

“Upon their arrival to a residence on Grove Avenue, they discovered Imani Smith, 26, of Edison with stab wounds,” the release said. Smith was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she was declared dead.

Officials have arrested Jordan D. Jackson-Small, 35, of Edison, in connection with Smith’s death. Authorities said the two knew each other before the incident and described it as “not a random act of violence.”

Smith’s father, Rawni Helper, said in a phone call with CNN Saturday that Jackson-Small is the father of Smith’s 3-year-old son.

Jackson-Small is facing several charges, authorities said, including first-degree murder and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He is currently being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center according to jail records.

Smith worked from 2011 to 2012 for Disney’s “The Lion King,” Broadway’s third-longest running show, according to Playbill.

The former child actress is survived by her son, “her parents, her two younger siblings, and an extended family, friends, and community who loved her so very much,” the GoFundMe said.

“A true triple-threat performer, she most notably played the role of Young Nala on Broadway in Disney’s Lion King — an experience that reflected the joy, creativity, and light she put into the world,” the post, which has raised more than $70,000, said.

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) – Santa Maria Police officers are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that happened just after midnight Saturday at the 600 block of Black Road after seeing someone in the road.

SMPD officers found a man dead in the northbound lane of Black Road after he got struck by a car upon further evidence.

SMPD investigators are now looking for a white sedan with major damage to its front side that left the scene, and are calling the incident a hit and run.

The SMPD described the deceased as a man in his 50s but are still working to confirm his identity pending notification of kin.

Anyone who has information on the location of the involved car or who witnessed the crash are asked to call SMPD dispatch at ext. 2277 or ext. 1233.
