El secretario de Defensa de EE.UU., Pete Hegseth, hizo una afirmación falsa sobre las Fuerzas Armadas en su testimonio ante la Cámara de Representantes, el miércoles. Posteriormente, repitió la misma afirmación falsa en su testimonio ante el Senado, el jueves.

La representante demócrata Jill Tokuda le preguntó, este miércoles, a Hegseth durante una audiencia de la Comisión de Servicios Armados de la Cámara de Representantes si acataría una hipotética orden futura del presidente Donald Trump de desplegar militares en los centros de votación durante las elecciones intermedias de este año. Tokuda le indicó que tal despliegue violaría la ley federal que prohíbe el envío de militares federales a los lugares de votación a menos que sea “necesario para repeler a enemigos armados de Estados Unidos”.

Tras afirmar que rechazaba la idea de que Trump emitiera órdenes ilegales, Hegseth dijo momentos después en el intercambio: “Debo señalar que, en 2024 [año en el que gobernaba Joe Biden], se desplegaron tropas en centros de votación de 15 estados”. Y repitió: “2024, tropas desplegadas en centros de votación de 15 estados. Explíquenme eso”.

La explicación es sencilla. La afirmación de Hegseth no es cierta.

Todas las activaciones de la Guardia Nacional relacionadas con las elecciones de 2024 fueron ordenadas por los gobernadores estatales, no por Biden. Además, los 12 estados que respondieron a las solicitudes de información de CNN afirmaron que ninguno de sus militares fue desplegado en los centros de votación.

En cambio, los estados afirmaron que su personal de la Guardia Nacional trabajó entre bastidores en otros lugares, ayudando con la ciberseguridad electoral o sirviendo como enlaces internos, o que, después de todo, la Guardia Nacional de su estado no fue activada para las elecciones.

Iowa fue un ejemplo típico. “Brindamos apoyo en materia de ciberseguridad en cualquier elección importante. (CNN) — Early birds are in for a celestial treat this week as activity from the Eta Aquariid meteor shower heats up — but they’ll need to keep sharp eyes on the sky.

The shower will peak between Tuesday and Wednesday, with prime views before daybreak on Wednesday, according to the American Meteor Society.

“The only opportunity to see these meteors is during the last few hours before dawn,” said Robert Lunsford, fireball report coordinator with the American Meteor Society.

This brief window is due to the fact that Aquarius, the constellation from which the meteors radiate, will not be visible until about 3 a.m. for much of the globe.

Typically considered the best meteor shower in the Southern Hemisphere, the annual Eta Aquariids can produce up to 40 meteors in places below the equator, Lunsford said.

The shower is less visible in the Northern Hemisphere, with up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak during ideal conditions.

However, the bright waning gibbous moon will severely affect the visibility of the shower, reducing the hourly rate of visible meteors to less than 10, according to EarthSky. In the United States, sky-gazers in the southern half of the country have the strongest chance of seeing the cosmic display.

Even with the ideal condition of a dark sky, Lunsford said the Eta Aquariids have not had the greatest showing in the past few years, barely producing five meteors per hour.

The Eta Aquariids are known for being speedy, zooming through the atmosphere at about 40 miles per second (64 kilometers per second). The meteors move so fast they can leave behind a glowing trail that lingers after the flash, according to NASA.

“Now that we have a really bright moon, we’re going to be lucky if we see just a couple an hour,” he added.

Finding a way to block out the moon and getting away from the city and streetlights will provide the best chance to see the shower. Lay down on a blanket or set up a lawn chair and look up, taking in as much of the dark sky as you can. After about 45 minutes, your eyes should adjust and you will just be able to make out the faint meteors.

The origin of Eta Aquariids

Tracing the paths of the Eta Aquariid meteors backward will leads to their radiant — the point within the constellation Aquarius where the meteors appear to originate. This point nearly aligns with the star Eta Aquarii, which gives the shower its name, according to EarthSky.

Knowing exactly where the radiant sits is not necessary to see the shower, but the higher the radiant appears in the sky the more meteors you are likely to see. Aquarius appears higher when viewed from the Southern Hemisphere than it does when observed from the Northern Hemisphere. That’s why places below the equator are preferable for viewing the Eta Aquariids, according to NASA.

“At this time of the year, if you’re south of the equator, the night is longer, so they have more of an opportunity to view it,” Lunsford said.

(CNN) — A viral trend claims that a combination of common over-the-counter medications, specifically an allergy drug and an acid reducer, can ease symptoms of perimenopause and menopause.

Perimenopause is the transitional time leading up to menopause, and it can begin several years before the final menstrual period, often in a woman’s early to mid-40s, though sometimes earlier. Menopause occurs when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, and the average age in the United States is around 52.

But back to the internet: Does this viral women’s health recommendation work — and is it safe?

I wanted to know what the science shows and what women with menopausal symptoms should do to manage them, so I reached out to CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and adjunct associate professor at George Washington University. She previously served as Baltimore’s health commissioner.

CNN: What is this viral trend, and where did it come from?

Dr. Leana Wen: The trend you’re referring to involves taking a combination of an antihistamine, often something like fexofenadine and cetirizine (commonly known by their brand names Allegra and Zyrtec, respectively), along with famotidine (commonly known by brand name Pepcid). This idea has spread widely on social media platforms, where some women have reported improvements in menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, flushing, skin itching and even low energy and brain fog.

It’s important to note that the origin appears to come from anecdotal reports and online communities, not from scientific journals and clinical trials. These medications are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to treat menopausal symptoms.

CNN: Is there any scientific basis for using these medications to treat symptoms of perimenopause or menopause?

Wen: There is a theoretical mechanism that some online influencers point to, which involves histamine, a chemical from the body’s immune system that acts through different receptors, including H1 and H2 receptors. Antihistamines block H1 receptors, and famotidine blocks H2 receptors. Histamine can affect blood vessels and may contribute to flushing and itching in some conditions, such as allergic reactions and mast cell activation syndrome, a condition that causes intense episodes of swelling, hives and other symptoms.

However, menopause symptoms are primarily driven by changes in estrogen levels and how those changes affect the brain’s temperature regulation system. This process involves complex interactions in the hypothalamus, not simply histamine pathways. I am not aware of any high-quality scientific evidence in the form of clinical trials showing that antihistamines or famotidine are effective treatments for menopause symptoms.

So, while the idea is biologically interesting, it remains unproven. Anecdotal reports should not be confused with rigorous scientific evidence, and more research is needed to study

Toda gran ciudad que se precie tiene su zona dedicada al lujo. En Nueva York, la Quinta Avenida. En Paris, los Campos Elíseos. Y en Madrid, destaca la zona conocida como “Milla de Oro”, un entramado de calles situadas en el distrito de Salamanca donde se concentran algunas de las marcas de ropa y joyas más exclusivas de todo el mundo. Las características de este entorno atraen a los extranjeros a tal punto que cada vez son más los que invierten en viviendas allí. Y gran parte de ellos vienen de América Latina.

“Es como un centro comercial al aire libre”, detalla a CNN Cristina Lanzarot, directora de la Asociación de Comerciantes Barrio de Salamanca Madrid, que aglutina a un centenar de comercios premium de la zona. “Sino el [centro comercial] más especial, es uno de los más especiales del mundo”.

La exclusividad no se limita a esta “Milla de oro”, sino que se extiende a los seis barrios que conforman el distrito. Y, de hecho, se aprecia al pasear por sus calles, donde el ambiente señorial embriaga a los peatones a través de las amplias avenidas y los edificios elegantes.

El sobre salto llega cuando uno ve los precios, ya no solo de los caprichos de una tarde de compras, sino también de la vivienda, ya que en ese distrito se paga el metro cuadrado más caro de toda la capital: más de US$ 11.500 frente a la media de US$ 6.800 de la ciudad, según los datos del pasado mes de febrero recabados por el Ayuntamiento de Madrid.

Unas cifras que amedrantarían a muchos bolsillos. Aunque no a las fortunas extranjeras, que han ido ganando un peso cada vez mayor en este distrito a lo largo de la última década. Tanto, que han terminado por provocar un fenómeno de gentrificación “extraño”, tal y como define Tarek Mure, asesor de la firma inmobiliaria Gilmar en el distrito de Salamanca. “No es una gentrificación de pobres a ricos, sino que de ricos a ricos”.

Algo que se explica porque los residentes nacidos en el extranjero han pasado de representar el 18% de los vecinos del distrito en el 2015, a cerca del 30% en 2025, según datos del consistorio de la capital.

Y lo llamativo es que, de los actuales 44.680 residentes extranjeros en este distrito, casi la mitad, un total de 21.740 personas, proceden de países de América del Sur. “Ahora, en vez de irse a Miami, (estas fortunas) se vienen a Madrid” sintetiza Lanzarot.

De estas cifras, la comunidad venezolana sobresale como la más numerosa, con 6.124 residentes; seguida de los colombianos, con 3.576 residentes, y la peruana, con 3.251 personas.

Representando al norte del continente americano, lo mexicanos suman 3.549 residentes en el distrito, según datos del Ayuntamiento de Madrid del año 2025.

Entre los motivos que han provocado el desembarco cada vez mayor de estas fortunas se cuentan “la belleza de su arquitectura neoclásica”, pero también “el idioma y la seguridad que hay, la posibilidad que te da para poder andar tranquilamente”, puntualiza Lanzarot.

Para participar en el mercado inmobiliario de este distrito madrileño hace falta llegar con capacidades y, según Mure, estas fortunas latinoamericanas lo hacen con solvencia.

Según su experiencia, éstas son “gigantes, imposibles”, y lo ejemplifica con una venta acaecida escasos días atrás y que ha llamado la atención en el sector. Se trata de un apartamento de 460 metros cuadrados en la Plaza de la Independencia -la misma que alberga la emblemática Puerta de Alcalá- por un total más de US$ 18.000.000.

“Estamos hablando de US$35.000 o US$39.000 el metro cuadrado, de una casa que encima no es nueva y que la han comprado como una segunda residencia”, detalla Mure.

Sin duda, un caso llamativo. Aunque si hay que hacer una media del gasto que realizan en los inmuebles ésta se situaría entre los US$ 2,3 y US$ 4,6 millones por compra, según Mure.
